Since the launch of Battle Field 2142, there has been alot of commotion and grumbling about its in-game advertising. A full description is here:

http://battlefield.ea.com/battlefield/bf/BF2142_News_101906.aspx

Its not just pre-textured in-game advertising, like in past games with the occational Pepsi or Axe texture on a billboard. It updates dynamicaly. Alot of people returned the game because of this issue.

As for what I think:

I believe that the game more than makes up for the ads. Animations, graphics, lighting, textures, all amazing. THe new Titan mode is fun as hell, and the v_model weapons look astounding. I do find the ad's annoying, though.

Is this a new trend in games? Dont we play games to escape the ad's everywhere else? (not really, but....maybe :) )

Even though I dont count it against the game, I still dont want to see this in the future :(

Finally a good subject!

Personally, I don't mind advertisement in-game, as long as it's kept to a level that doesn't interfere with my gaming in any way.

For example, I haven't played BF2142, but say there is an ad on a model of a billboard in the game. That wouldn't bother me since it is integrated in the game in a way that's realistic. Why not have real products on a billboard in-game? Just an example.

However, I do think there will be more of this in the future, as the gaming industry continues to grow. It will probably go overboard, sadly.

[/2 cents]

I wouldnt mind it if it was unobtrusive and had a point, i.e. reducing the overall price of the game to the consumer. As it stands its only a method for EA to generate more income at the expense of the consumers enjoyment of their product.

Please stop encouraging EA, dont buy 2142.

2142 is the exact same game as BF2, just with changed textures and models. And we all know that BF2 sucks some serious ass.

The BattleField 2142 advertising system tracks which ads you look at and give you more of the same accordingly. It's apalling. I won't even be warezing bf2142.
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-22 19:27:03 UTC Post #200444
hey, hey lets not go overboard. BF 2142 is not just changed. The weapons/classes are changed/tweaked, and the Titan mode is a totally new experience. First its a rush to control the most silos to take down the shield, from there its either attack the enemy titan, or defend your own. I was just in a game a moment ago where our titan was about to explode, but 10 of us just all went and guarded the final console so it would not be destroyed. We guarded it for 12 minutes, while others went for the titan. It was so much fun!

The engines lighting/texture resolution is much better too. Distance textures are much clearer, and the lighting is amazing.

As for the ads, they are only on billboards in-game. THey are not in hot spots where people are all the time, they are kind of tucked away. I dont mind due to the fun I have in the game.

Even though some of it is just changed texures/models, that does makes a difference. Its the whole futuristic feel that draws you in. Similar to how music plays a role in games. Its still music, but different music changes the mood of the game. :)

still, I would prefer not to see ads in-game in the future :)

yeah i don't see what the big frigging deal is, if I'm burning my dodge viper down the long road and pass billboards of sprite or old spice i dont care

BUT if I'm blasting on some fools in an fps and they all say the company tag line before dying and are dressed in advertisements ...there's a problem
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-22 19:43:23 UTC Post #200446
Lucky for us games have not reached that zenith of advertising yet :cyclops:

Its not so bad though. As I said, the ad's are on the corners of the map, or in area's that really dont see any action.

I wonder if the income from these advertisements will benefit the gamer in form of lower game prices or the distributers?

Oh wait, no I don't.

It's fucking bullshit.
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-22 20:47:07 UTC Post #200458
There was talk of the games being lower in price on IGN, but thats not the case in BF2142.

THats the only way I would accept this idea if it reduced prices of games :)
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-22 21:06:48 UTC Post #200465
i doubt the advertising would produce enough to trickle down to the consumer
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-22 21:51:11 UTC Post #200469
I payed to play the game, not to look at ads.

That coincides with everything else that ive bought, not just games. If ive bought it already I don't want to see other advertisements. Such an example are DVDs.

If it fits with the game context thats alright, but if it stands out in any way or hinders my gaming experience then that's just too far.
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-22 21:58:05 UTC Post #200472
Well, bf2142 is the only singular PC game ever to breach $100 in Australia. Yea...it really reduces costs down.

I'm not paying $110 for a piece of shit game.

Now, as for advertisements, I don't mind, as long as they are discreet in the form of posters in the actual map, not flashy flash images.

Posted 18 years ago2006-10-22 22:11:54 UTC Post #200477
America isnt a country.

Anywho, i forgot to comment on reducing the cost:

I agree and disagree. You think it should lower the price of the game, but on the other hand, they know people are gonna buy it, no matter the price.

However, if it was a game you had to pay-per-month, then it should reduce price. Example: Sims online. Lets say they advertised in that game. In that case, it would pay for your monthly fee.

I find nothing wrong with advertising as long is it doesn't get in the way of the game... People play games all the time it would probably be a better industry for advertisers to get into... I mean imagine if de_dust had advertisments, they would be seen more times than any commercial could possibly ever give.
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-23 14:51:23 UTC Post #200559
Nobody would play CS because of that.

Dont count on that, since CS has roughly 10.000 players a day, lets say 50% of that enjoys playing dust(how? I dont know). That means 5000 people play DE_dust every 24Hr cycle.

Given that a avarage/bad show already attracts 100.000 spectators here.

Easy calculation if you'd ask me, and EA or Valve would charge good money for those adds.

There's more than one type of dollar you stupid piece of..
Seriously, ignorance unmatched.

I will certainly not be buying BF2142 or any future DICE/EA products. I've just lost respect in them. I should go egg their headquarters, it's like 10 min by bike from here.

What about advertisements in WoW, with it's 7 million players? That's more than most countries. This is an almost unexploited market for advertisers, one they will tap into more and more in due time, and I don't like it at all. I'm already sick of seeing ads everywhere, now they're gonna invade gaming too?
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-23 15:15:38 UTC Post #200562
ZL, he gave CS as an example. Indeed Wow is much bigger but i doubt blizzard will make his fans happy with commercials in the game, neither do i think it fits in such a game.

Heck, the only game some commercials would fit in would be racing games.

There could have been real Coke/Fruitopia machines in Half-Life, and nobody would have questioned that, as long as they didn't go overboard with it and make the textures all high res or something.

I think that would provide some negative feedback from the roleplay community.....

I shan't be buying BF2142 largely due to this. What the fuck just beeped at me? Regardless, yeah, I don't want to be playing in "the future" and suddenly, in the middle of the mothership or whatever they're called, find a Coke advertisment. If it were a modern-day thing, like BF2, and the place was clearly a place to have advertisments, I wouldn't care and would just think of them as atmosphere. I guess that wouldn't sell anything, though. Just add a touch of realism to the scene.

Adverts in modern-day industrialised city environments, fine.
I believe that the game more than makes up for the ads. Animations, graphics, lighting, textures, all amazing. THe new Titan mode is fun as hell, and the v_model weapons look astounding. I do find the ad's annoying, though.
You paid for the game. If it was free, fine, silly ads ahoy, otherwise no.

As you can see from this pic:

It is displayed on those type of billboards. THat particular location is right in front of your spawn. No battles in this area, and you pass it for a second in a vechicle if your on the ground. Its not that bad. Its a good game, Dont pass it up because of advertising.

I'm passing it up because everyone says it's exactly like BF2. Whatever.
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-24 13:29:44 UTC Post #200694
Yes, it is kind of like BF2, but the changes make the difference. Mech battles are very fun, the hover tanks are unique as well, and Titan mode is a very fun experience. Nothing like it out there. If you dont like futuristic themed games, then its probably not for you, but if your someone who loves the whole futuristic feel, with a BattleField twist pick it up :)

Lots of unlocks too. 3 weapons to unlock for each class, grenades, gadets, that kind of stuff :)
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-24 13:30:10 UTC Post #200695
I'm going to pas on this game, i dont like the cheap map whoring they did with BF2 maps and it seems to be rather crap from what i have heard from my clanmates. And, i dont want any advertisements in a game i PAYED for. Free games? Bring on the adds!

And well, its just another moneywhoring concept from EA/DICE whom have brutaly raped and abused the BF2 community with crappy patches that required a feckin 2 gig of free space on my hardrive, i didnt even needed that to install BF2. heck, BF2 has only been fucked up by all of the patches, 1.00 FTW.

EDIT2: Xyos, they went from 7 classes in BF2 to 5 in 2142, cheaply done IMHO, and all those unlocks are only going to imbalance the game even more.
EDIT: Almost on 50.000 points now in BF2, and what does get carried over to BF2142? nothing, niks, nada, nope. Heck, why should i want to start all over again when i know that dice will bring out BF200zillionsomething in another year or so, meanwhile letting me suffer a heavily crippled game.

EDIT3: I just read in the clan messages that theres already a second patch coming, because someone fucked up big time so a lot of people cant log onto the master server, wich is required to play the game...
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-24 13:38:10 UTC Post #200698
Well, if you were a BF2 veteran, you get a little Icon above your name for all the world to see :)

I do agree with the reducing of classes, but it does work. Assault and medic are now one, as for enginneer and rocket man :) Its not that bad. Every sequal to a game has elements removed/added to it. Overall the game is a good one.
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-24 13:42:15 UTC Post #200699
games are trying to mimic real life. if games are anything like real life, there would be random ads all over. like in real life.

and yes, it ruins the experience of the game a bit. I kinda disapprove of it, but it IS a good way to get some extra funding for the project to make the game better... is it not? :|

Reducing classes works? C'mon, the support/medic guy is now some sort of superman, did you know that it always was pretty hard to have a CQB against a medic since he had health packages, well, now he also carries a infinete supply of grenades! Blimey genious......

It's about what benefits the consumer. We're paying quite a lot of money for the game, and having to look at ads after you've bought it just isn't right. I don't care how small they are or if they don't interfere with gameplay, I don't want ads in a game I've fucken paid for. I hate EA with fervor.

I think that if ads are used ingame, they should have some sort of subtle relation to the story. Take a look at the vending machines in HL2: Dr. Breens Private Reserve. Ads or products like this add some hidden humor to the experience. In my opinion real ads have no place in a game. I hope we won't be seeing ads/commercials during loading between maps... :

On the other hand I guess developers can throw in as many ads as they want as long as the game is completely free and open source :)
