Recently, I purchased an old IBM laptop for basic stuff (internet, email, blah blah blah), and of course, HL mapping. This isn't actually a mapping related issue, but I figured someone else might have had the same problem at some point.

You see, this laptop has a really old 16 MB video card, and there are several problems with it, but most annoyingly, skyboxes render really strangely. Check it out:

The video card has the newest drivers installed, and Half-Life has the most recent updates. Anyone know what's going on?

does the sky box mess up on other maps? also check the console.

It's funny, it only seems to be that skybox in particular, but it's not just that one map. I haven't checked all the skyboxes yet, though.

maybe the texture has errors try another one. it most probably will work.If not, i can't help you :(

Texture? It's a skybox, and I'm not having troubles with my own maps, it's the official ones.

Anyway, there's an update. It seems that some maps have this problem and others don't, it's really inconsistent.

Another update: I just loaded that same map again, and now it doesn't have that problem, but other maps do. This is the most inconsistent bug I've ever seen in Half-Life. :

When you say load...

Do you mean you compiled the map again, or you ran it again?

Its obviously an OpenGL error, as your video card can't support it... I'm not too keen on these...

Dude... How could I have compiled it? IT'S AN OFFICIAL MAP. IT CAME WITH HALF-LIFE. You don't recognize it? It's right before the dam. :tired:

And yes, it does support OpenGL, just not too well, apparently.

Are the TGA files are alright? I bet they are, and if they are there isn't much you can do.

Another possibility is that there's some incompatibility with the updated transparency DLL's I copied from Steam. I'll try replacing those with the old ones.

way to hurt my feelings

Anyway, I reinstalled Half-Life without adding the new DLLs, and it's still giving me these problems. It's the strangest thing, how it only happens with that one skybox, and only in certain maps. Ah well, I suppose I can live with it if nobody can figure it out.

Are you sure you have HL version 1.1.1.0 installed?

I've seen this before and there's a fix for it. Try this:

Open the pak0.pak file in your valve folder with Wally or PakScape. Find the gfx folder and copy that folder AND its contents to you valve folder outside the pak0.pak file.
Now HL can read the sky textures straight from the hard drive, instead from the pak file.

Yeah, I have that patch installed. Thanks for the fix, I'll try that tomorrow.

Eh, it didn't work.

Then you just have to accept the fact that your laptop/video card is too old for HL, even though HL is old as well.

It is an old laptop indeed, but not too old to handle Half-Life by any means. It was made 3 years after it came out, was top of the line at the time, and it far surpasses the minimum requirements, which obviously, are extremely low. I've played Half-Life on much weaker systems than this, and it plays fine.

I suppose it's just not entirely compatible, rather than not being powerful enough, which it most certainly is.

have you tried uses diffrent rendering?
Software
Direct 3D
Open GL
Do you have the same problems withh all 3?
Posted 17 years ago2007-03-22 04:12:22 UTC Post #216686
It may help, but I'm not willing to change, due to the limitations of these other rendering modes. Especially software, that's awful.

FYI, I'm using OpenGL.

Yeah, Direct 3D and Software render are a no-go for HL.
Have you installed DirectX 9.0c?

How much influence is DX going to have on an OpenGL powered game?

DirectX 9.0c is installed, yes. To be honest, I'm surprised it supports it.

srry its your graphics card. This is what happens when you have 16m graphics card and run hl in open gl. I used to have an ibm thinkpad which had a 16 mb graphics card aswell. It didn't happen all the time but most of the time it did. Mailny when you load up a map and than go to the console and change map.

What a coincidence. Anyway, it's not much of a problem. It doesn't bother me too much when it happens, and it works fine otherwise. If I really need to see the skybox, I'll just copy the map onto my desktop.

srry is the processor on your ibm about 850 mhz and does it have 256 ram
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-09 22:53:20 UTC Post #218563
no, 1.13 Ghz/733 Mhz (733 in power saving mode) P-III and 384 megs of RAM. The RAM was upgraded from the regular 256 before I bought it, but now I'm thinking of buying some more...
