We knew someone would do ot and that it was only a matter of time.

Well, that time is almost here.

So, let me get this straight: It doesn't allow you to run DX10 games on a DX10 card with all their DX10 features on Windows XP, it just waters them down with DX9-level graphics, and gives you the ability to run them on older cards? What a waste. There aren't even any games on the horizon that will be exclusive to DX10, so why bother with this?

Besides all that, it's not even proven to be real yet.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-23 23:07:34 UTC Post #219929
would it hurt you to get it srry? and if its a project the guy is working on let him. heaven knows we all work on useless junk all day long
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-23 23:14:02 UTC Post #219930
It could hurt you, if it was unstable. :

But that wasn't my point. My point was that it's being wrongly touted as a real "DirectX 10 for XP", which I'm fairly certain it's not, after reading into it. I have no problem with it, and it's good if it lets a number of people use their old hardware to run modern games, but it's not the fix we're looking for.

seems rather stupid to me, there is no doubt in my mind that i'll look and run worse than the dx10 games running in dx9 mode. if it works at all.

Stop whining. He's done a better job than anyone here could've done. Maybe he'll do something even better with it in the future? But before you start calling it a stupid idea, maybe you should try doing better yourself? There are going to be many game releases that won't even have backwards compatability with DX9, and for the many who refuse to go near the bloated pile of bullshit that is Vista, this project could be the answer. I'm sure the imagequality will be dramaticly improved as the project matures, and I'm sure it'll be a matter of weeks before Microsoft tried to sue him and shut the project down too, sadly.

What I don't like is the way Techreport refer to him as a "hacker", while technically reverse-engineering is hacking in a sense, it makes him and his project look bad. Big thumbs down to Techreport.

I hope he gets it working. If he doesn't, I'm looking at Cedega to do it and I'll move to Linux. There's no way in hell I'm gonna get Me II, especially with what I recently heard it does to HD content if it detects that u may be trying to pirate it. I'll wait for XP II to come out, since MS finally admitted that they fucked up w/ Vista.

Also, that guy is a hacker. 'Hackers' are the good code jockeys. The general media misuses it and calls the bad guys that, when they are actually called 'crackers'. Now You Know. :P

I know much about the hacker/cracker terminology Tawnos, and reverse-engineering IS inheritantly hacking, but to the average retard who reads that site, they'll see "hacker" and think "LIEK OMFGWTF HES A HAXOR BAD HAXOR BAD". The average "hacker" (or what the media considers hackers) are really just crackers/scriptkiddies, though there still are some real black hat hackers out there, the the majority of what the media labels as "hackers" are just kids copy+pasting code that real hackers have come up with ^^

So thus I'm right, don't correct me.. bitch.

according to wikipedia, black hat hackers are referred to as crackers, and leet computar d00ds are hackers. script kiddies are script kiddies.

/me corrects Penguinboy

^^ Black hat hackers are hackers who gain unauthorised access into systems to explore or steal data. White hat hackers are hackers who are hired to hack into systems and fix security holes. Crackers are usually immature kids who break into systems to piss people off and delete/modify data and generally be destructive, and just use bruteforce and usually use others code in order to crack systems, no different from scriptkiddies. Cracking doesn't require any programming ability at all, it's simply cracking, it doesn't have to involve programming your own tools in order to do so. Real hackers find their own security holes rather than just exploiting and cracking pre-existing ones.

Nobody corrects me, ever.. bitch.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hat

"Use of the term "cracker" is mostly limited (as is "black hat") to some areas of the computer and security field and even there is considered controversial. Until the 1980s, all people with a high level of skills at computing were known as "hackers". A group that calls themselves hackers refers to "a group that consists of skilled computer enthusiasts". The other, and presently more common usage, refers to those who attempt to gain unauthorized access to computer systems. Over time, the distinction between those perceived to use such skills with social responsibility and those who used them maliciously or criminally, became perceived as an important divide. Many members of the first group attempt to convince people that intruders should be called crackers rather than hackers, but the common usage remains ingrained. The former became known as "hackers" or (within the computer security industry) as white hats, and the latter as "crackers" or "black hats". The general public tends to use the term "hackers" for both types, a source of some conflict when the word is perceived to be used incorrectly. In computer jargon the meaning of "hacker" can be much broader."

in summary, hacker = bad, for nubs

for non-nubs:
hacker = security guy or enthusiast
cracker = bad
script kiddie = script kiddie
haX0r = instant fail

IMHO

Hacker = Someone who tampers with systems, code, configuration or generally modifies things for a result. Not neccessarily breaking security, but it depends how you put it into context.
Cracker = Retarded child hacker who modifies or uses pre-existing programs to "crack" systems for destructive purposes. A wannabe black hat, but lacking the skill to be truly considered one.
Script-kiddie = See above ^
"Hacking" (in a security context) = Exploring code in order to find exploits and weaknesses and then using them exploits.
Black hat hacking = Gaining unauthorised access into a system via self-discovered exploits and own techniques for exploration (and quite often theft).
White hat hacking = Attempting to gain access to a system with owners permission via self-discovered exploits and own techniques as well as testing the system against common exploits and fixing them.

Hacking can mean anything, but in a security context, it means breaking into and exploring, however few black hats are destructive, and most of them are mature enough to exercise their skill for exploration rather than theft, destruction or disturbance.

Copying and pasting FTL, taking the time to type things out yourself and not hiding behind the "almighty shining beacon of knowledge" that is Wikipedia FTW <3

And still, I haven't had the need to change my point, what the media refers to as "hackers" are usually just scriptkiddies and crackers, so really you've just agreeing with my original point by quoting and bolding that particular bit of text.

Once again, nobody corrects me, ever.. bitch.

<rant>

Wiki is opinion and is edited by people who think their opinion is more important than facts.

I know, I was a wiki editor for about a year; heres some background on things that happen in Wiki; I got banned for trying to insist that 9/11 conspiracy theories, while obviously mostly insane, had such a large following that they should be covered on Wiki. JFK conspiracy theories were covered, UFO conspiracy theories were covered - I didn't think this deserved to be treated any differently.

Other admins (and there are a lot of "Pro-US" admins on Wiki who seem to "change" articles to fit the current ruling parties official line - I doubt that's just coincidence) didn't like it and one guy got me banned for it as he said I was trying to stir up trouble.

He later turned out to be an employee of the Department of Homeland Security - but Wiki is ALL FACTS and there are no people there who edit it just for their or someone elses benefit. No sir. He got banned later too - partly for making edits and changes to certain articles which reflected one particular "political" point of view.

My favourite example is the USS Liberty debate where a 16 year old wiki editor argued with the president of the USS Liberty Veterans Association over some of the facts on the page. That's a 16 year old kid who hasn't finished school yet arguing about the facts concerning the USS Liberty, with a former officer of the USS Liberty who was actually on the USS Liberty.

In real life if you had both those guys in front of you, which one would you believe when they were talking about the Liberty? Really? Cos on the internet the 16 year old was taken more seriously and his "opinions" are what are shown on the Wiki page about the USS Liberty.

Wiki contains a lot of opinion and the more popular you are on Wikipedia the more likely your opinion is to be "true" (i.e. kept on the article and presented as fact). At no previous point in history has "the truth" been so flexible and unlikely to be opinion, rather than truth.

I guess it proves that old saying "If enough people believe it, then it must be true" - even if it's not.

Oops - that's my tea break over. Back to work.

IMHO

Hackers are never on the media, never caught, never seen. They let all the script kiddies and dumb asses draw the attention of the media. The level they work on is like the blackops of the government. No one knows about it and is done anonymously.
