Why are my custom texture appearing as black/purple checker board in Hammer?

Did they work before hand? What's probably happening is that the .VMTs for the textures are pointing to the incorrect directory for the texture. Although if they worked before, then I have no idea at all :nuke:

yeah, definately a .vmt error.

Ill check.

/me opens random vmt file:

"$basetexture" "Documents and Settings/Atom/Bureaublad/asdw/{fixedss"

Well there's my problem. :P It should be:
D:SteamsteamappsSourceModsSTS-121materialssts_121{fixedss"

Ill recompile the TGA's now. :)

No.. it shouldn't.

it should be materials/yourfolder/yourtexture

and get the .vtf photoshop plugin.

Well, it works anyway. They show up in Hammer.

yeah, but if anybody downloads the map with the textures looking for that location, it wont work unless it's exactly the same, which it wont be.

Hell, i don't even know if im actually gonna release this map, since im crap with Source.

Also, its seems vtex or whatever made my textures look crap. They have these weird artifacts, pretty much like those artifacts you get with jpg compression. Why?
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-31 16:06:35 UTC Post #223963
It's been long since I used vtex. The photoshop plugin lets you choose compression levels.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-31 16:13:22 UTC Post #223964
You can compile textures with no compression using a text file with VTex. I love yee olde fashioned way!

The artifacting could be that the original texture had those imperfections, or that the normal map is compressing at distances. Do the textures have a normal map? Regular textures should have compression, but the normal maps shouldn't.

I don't use photoshop...

Bah be old school and use VTEX :D Good ol' drag and click. It takes a while to get used to Source if you jump from the HL wagon so no worries.

Drag and drop is too slow. And it doesn't create vmt's, only vtf's.
I need something automated. Something that can handle a whole bunch of TGA's.

Also, i don't care about all that normal map stuff. Confuses me. Just normal texture is fine.

Does the vtex plugin work with PS CS3 Extended? Because if it does, I'm going to redownload it.

Photoshop with the VTF plugin is the fastest way to my knowledge to produce VTFs. You still have to manually write the VMTs regardless.

Well get a TWHL member to code you one. It doesn't exactly take much effort to paste:

"LightmappedGeneric"
{ "$basetexture" "yourfoldername/yourtexname" }

In a text file and fill in the spaces.

And Normal Mapping is very easy that even I can do it...All you need is the Nvidea Normal Map Plugin or another program called crash something...I forgot the name but anyway use this if you're interested. The results are uncanny:
