After a year's work and two remakes, I have finally got my Urban After-Life Site up. I've also snagged 150mb of web space and my own .com!!! Have a look and leave some comments here. Also, I've started my own little segment called 'The Junk Yard' where I will put up the worst HL maps I have ever seen and you get to rank it and even submit your own map. I run Opera 9.21 actually.

The site has some neat dynamic effects such as slide out stuff. You might want to remove that grid though.

EDIT: Scrolling in the menu bar doesn't work right in IE7. The menu is plain dead in Firefox and Opera.

Also, you used FrontPage - which is probably where the problems began - the old version is seriously outdated, while the bugs still haven't been ironed out of the newer versions - don't even get me started on 2007!

HTML + CSS ftw.

1. Get rid of Frontpage (might I suggest Notepad++?)
2. Read a tutorial on how to write semantic, standards compliant HTML/CSS
3. Ditch the tables/frames for CSS
4. Make your design less ugly

Anyhoo, Caboose's advice is quite wise. Notepad++ is what I'm using to build TWHL3 at the moment. Check up the W3Schools (Google for it) for some beginner tutorials on markup. As for the actual design, well...that's where some imagination is needed. I suggest looking through existing webpages to get some ideas on different styles. ZombieLoffe has made some brilliant webpage designs.

Its pretty basic but I learned all the CSS I know from W3Schools which ant suggested.

I'm happy with it.

I blame FireFox for not supporting JavaScript, that's why you have to use IE. You can supposedly download a plugin or something but I don't know about that. I am using a very old version of Frontpage but it does the job well enough and I just fix it up in notepad. So it's not me actually, it's all of you! Ha ha! Never mind, hopefully someone will fix Firefox and I would rather not redo my whole site again. Thanks for your feedback and it's not that bad, some of you have worse (i'm not naming names)

Firefox & Opera support Javascript fine. I have never encountered a Javascript website that doesn't work in Firefox/Opera except yours.

In regards to "a plugin," you're confusing Javascript (a bastardised version by Netscape) with Java (something you can write full programs with, not just slide-out menus). This plug-in is installed onto your computer, not your browser, so any browsing willing to can use Java.

firefox and opera fully support javascript. in fact, any site that only works in IE is an EXTREMELY badly developed site.

here is some REAL, non-flaming advice:
1. ditch your current layout. seriously, that bloated animation stuff may look cool to you, but it's really, really bad.
2. ditch frontpage.
3. get your hands on notepad++, its free and awesome.
4. LEARN, (yes, you need to learn), LEARN to use CSS. w3cschools is a good reference.
5. if you have difficulty with CSS, the IRC folks will be happy to help. dont bother asking for frontpage help though.

If IE supports it then WHY doesn't FireFox? And if I had know FireFox doesn't support this Javascript then I wouldn't have used it. It's supposed to be good too. I used fully working and professionally made Javascript: Here's an extract from the source:

And Penguin, I don't want to change my layout, It was intentionally made to look based on Valve Hammer Editor. You wouldn't like it if I told you to scrap your page based on a couple of peoples opinions would you?

It doesn't look like Hammer at all, it just looks like crap. I doubt you'll find anyone that disagrees with us.

well it looks really shitty, but you can leave it that way if you want, i suppose. but you dont want to be getting premade scripts from other sites.

anyway, even in IE they look crappy, so you can keep the layout but ditch the javascript hax. you can live without it.

IE supports it because IE renders it WRONG, but since the script was made by some idiot, they made the script wrong too. seriously, it'd look alot better without them anyway.

also, theres an edit button for a reason. use it.

I'm sorry to say this, but it does look extremely unprofessional and the animations are very gimmicky.

#twhl peeps have taught me a lot about html and css and i'm sure you could learn a lot yourself. Notepad++ is an amazing program for webdesign. I recommend you take a look at Ant's and ZombieLoffe's sites in particular, they excell at minimalistic and practical design.

Firefox and Opera are both far more web compatible than IE, so if something works in IE better than one of those, you know you have a problem.

Here's another tip:

I suggest you take down your e-mail from your site, at least in mailto: form. I still get 50 spam e-mails a day because I left my e-mail address on my website for spammers to harvest.

I actually quite like it, the grid goes for your eyes after a while though, and it seems a bit unaligned at the top.

IE:

Quite nice still, except that the top is still unaligned.

I like the sliding menus. Did you get it from Dynamic drive? I cannot find any comment saying it's from there.

I'm sure it would be possible to do the same thing in flash.
You could just use a trial of Swish or something.

ON THE FRONT PAGE:

I suggest you change the background of the table in the middle to be the same as the GIF.

I like the XP-esque stylings, looks nice.

I also like the box that comes up when you click on the maps, I see where your coming from when trying to make it look like hammer.

You should change it to a pop-up or something, so it can be moved about.

You could make a smart-edit style menu, with the different tabs for information.

You've obviously put a lot of work into this, and if it wasn't for the glitches it would be a pretty neat site.

Just drop the javascript menus, perhaps make the site different elements of the hammer editor? For example. click on the texture application box for about us, or configuration for credits etc.

Don't make it mystery meat though...
