None of these models work for me. I put the models in my model folder. Than in hammer I created an env_sprite with sprite name as the models the model .mdl. Than when I x out the sprite's property menue an error pops up and Hammer exits out. Am I doing something wrong?

Yes, you create a cycler, than, you know the rest. Don't use env_sprite, there for sprites.

Cool their working now, except they aren't masked. Black is where it should be masked. Ive tryed all render modes but they don't change it except additive but than the tree glows. Btw env_sprite works for original hl models, just makes them illusionary.

download these and place them in your valve folder, or for steam i think its steamapps.

These files will enable the model transparency for you.

Hey rim, I put the four files into my valve folder and it made no difference. Is there anything special I need to do.

You probably put them in the wrong place.

Nope, there in my valve folder. And models in model folder. Well one website said some models may not mask in older mods and im using an old version of hl1.

WTF, of course they aren't working then. Isn't it obvious? Update!

1.1.1.0 is the latest WON version (the last non-Steam version), so search for it. I would suggest moving to Steam HL regardles.

Remember models don't have shadow, if you want to do it realistic it is not a good idea using models.

Models allow greater detail than you could ever do with brushes, and in an engine like Goldsource no-one's going to care about it not casting a shadow.

... I wasn't going to, zeeba.

if you want a shadow for it, just make a null brush roughly the shape of the model to cast a shadow for you.

Strider, there IS a reason why Valve simply raised most of their detailed brush-based items off the ground instead of turning them into entities. It's because things look better with shadows. Or maybe they were just lazy, but it still looks better. :P

I recommend you do what Rimrook said, because shadows make a difference.

OMG would that really work??? is a grat idea. Fuck, I tryed to make the forest where Boromir died (LOTR) and I leave the map for that shadows problems.

HL1 has never been good for shadows. Sadly it never will be. For an environment of that scale ans with that much detail Source is the only way.

yea I just played a minIMU'S mini mod and I remember actually noticing a shadow being casted from his brush made tree. They do make a dif. "The best way ive seen shadows made is when you actually make the shadow part of the texture you place on the ground by whatever casts it." A good example is on the counterstrike map with the castle. The shadow is on that weird compass sun dial thing in one of the bombsites.

...or you could just put a model inside the shadow of a brush...
