A picture gallery where everyone can post their screen shots, concept art, picture of models, etc. Anything related to (Gold)Source.

that would be useful, just limit the images to something like 150kb so it doesn't blow out the storage size... if TWHL even has a storage limit... And let there be a moderator for it so people don't spam it with images of nonrelated crap. unless its cool, of course.

Yes and an upload limit, so people can't post more than, let's say, 25 images per week.
The pictures doesn't even have to be stored on the server.
Members could upload their pictures on sites like Imageshack and then post the URL to the picture on TWHL to have it put in the gallery.

What would a buddie system be good for anyway here on TWHL, srsly?

I have to say Im still a bit disapointed at the search system.
I heard there would be more filters for like searching maps and stuff, but there isn't. Maybe I just imagened D:
Or is it just not done yet?

Hey you can get ideas (just ideas, not steal) from FPSBanana (www.fpsbanana.com)

ok, how about another suggestion, How about a more advanced rating system?
like rating the map's Gamplay,skill,texturing,etc.
Posted 16 years ago2008-04-16 01:58:40 UTC Post #248834
A) FPSBanana is an absolute mess of a site, it's not something we want to aspire to be like.

B) That's what the comments are for, people should be downloading and reviewing maps more then going "omg luks awsum =D" and giving it 5 stars.

Yes, I agree Strider. On another note altogether, how about a coding tutorial section. I know they could just be put in the corresponding game tutorial list, (ie, that coding fog tutorial went in the HL tutorials) but I think it would be alot easier for people looking to code to be easily able to find a few helpful tutorials. If you did do this I would happily start writing a few tutorials to kick it off.
Posted 16 years ago2008-04-20 01:00:01 UTC Post #248970
there won't be a coding section because then there would have to be 2 coding sections, one for source and one for hl1. and because there aren't nearly enough coding tutorials to merit having a dedicated section.

Yes. A coding tutorials section would be nice Caus' i really want to know how to code. I already got Microsoft visual C++ 6.0.

Not enough people know how to code to be worth giving it a vault, let along the fact that writing them is probably intensly annoying.

Might the edit post feature be limited to the last 2 people who've replied to the post. That'll turn the edit cutoffs down a bit, and I dont see how it could do any harm.

I would like to see "All Forums" like in the map vault. In there though, you should strip the stickies of their superpowers and just read recent posts in order.

I just think it would be easier to read down one list and stop when the dates get too old. Sorry if it's been mentioned already. I'll code it if you want! (xcept no i can't code lawl)

Nah because then the forum name would have to be displayed on the thread list somewhere, and there's no room. also, the create thread form would be messed up. not only that, but it pretty much ruins the 'forum' idea completely. what's the point of having separate forums if they're all mashed up into one again?
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
Posted 16 years ago2008-04-28 17:24:35 UTC Post #249353
It's the same idea as the recent thread posts on the front page, just extended. It would just be easier/more efficient to monitor recent thread activity, at least in my view.

As far as the create thread form being messed up, you wouldn't need one, because when you click on a thread it takes you into that forum--just like the recent posts on the front page.

I dunno,i'm not trying to make a big deal out of it... maybe it would be gay after-all. = >

Since Firefox seems to be the official web browser of choice of the webmasters of this site, can I then humbly suggest that the little known, yet highly Firefox supported "Canvas" tag be considered as a possible design element. To see what the new generation (HTML-5) Canvas tag can do, please go here: http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/HTML:Canvas

For what I seen, this mostly Firefox markup tag is very amazing. It can do things that normally, only a Java applet or Flash plug-in can do!
Posted 16 years ago2008-04-29 01:40:47 UTC Post #249366
Actually, out of the three people currently "in charge" of TWHL3 only one prefers Firefox. Myself and Ant are Opera men (well Opera man and Opera boy ;) ).

It seems <canvas> is supported by both anyway, so I guess it's in Penguinboy's court (because he is the coder) as to whether it's actually worth using, if it hasn't been already.

Posted 16 years ago2008-04-29 02:05:05 UTC Post #249367
of course it isn't worth using :/
1. it's not cross-browser
2. TWHL is XHTML, not HTML5
3. HTML5 isn't specified yet
4. what the hell would you use it for on a site like this?
as a proper web developer (unlike some), i have to take into consideration cross-browser compatibility and ease-of-use.
the reason this kind of stuff is 'little known' is because no sensible person would consider using it, at the current time. sure, it might be useful when HTML5 is specified (and ten years after that when IE finally supports it), but it isn't now.

Posted 16 years ago2008-04-29 21:12:11 UTC Post #249405
Wow, I did not expect a barrage like this!

I suppose Penguinboy has a point on the HTML 5 thing, it's not ready yet. Now, the canvas tag can be made cross browser by inserting a simple Google script called "Explorer Canvas" on the website's HTML code. This will then make Internet Explorer compatible with Canvas.

I do admit that Canvas seems to be mostly for fancy eye candy. What really intrests me about Canvas, is it's 3D aspect to it. You can see it here for yourself: http://www.abrahamjoffe.com.au/ben/canvascape/

Aye. This site is not connection speed specific: one of the things about having a dialupper on the design team is that you design for everyone, not just people with fancy Internet.

Posted 16 years ago2008-04-30 10:01:41 UTC Post #249429
Well yea, I already came to the conclusion that canvas or any other exotic client side scripts is not a good idea for this site.

I suppose for a traffic heavy website like this one, it needs to be accessible to as many people as possible, including the ones with dial-up connections, not just broadband, which is where Ant's comment comes in about this site not being connection speed specific. And this can be accomplished by not having too many graphics, too many different fonts, Java applets and especially, complicated Flash animation effects.

Hey Penguinboy, just curious with two questions: What website editor do you use to work on TWHL3? And what's your take on using frames?
Posted 16 years ago2008-04-30 10:14:36 UTC Post #249430
The best "website editor" you can find is Notepad, or any other text editor similar to Notepad (like TextWrangler or Notepad++).

Maybe for you. I rather have something with "WYSIWYG", I need automation! That hand coding from scratch stuff takes too long, is too hard and it makes think too much. I once tried making a website with Notepad, and I ended up with a bloody abortion of a website.
Posted 16 years ago2008-04-30 19:15:20 UTC Post #249449
ah, i see.

i recommend that you learn to write a website by hand if you want to become a web developer, or even just want to make a proper functional website. just because you can use frontpage doesn't mean you're a web developer. (in fact, quite the opposite)

programs such as frontpage (and the 2007 version, expression or something) and dreamweaver make an absolute mess of a website, in appearance and in markup.

a site like TWHL would be impossible in an automated program. ignoring the obvious code side of the site, the markup is well-written, valid XHTML, cross-browser compatible, etc etc. all the html and css is written by hand by ant and myself (mostly ant).

on top of that, you need a well formed website to use code in it. you can't make dynamic-content compatible sites with an automated program. i've coded all of twhl3 from scratch. no automation can be used when programming, and html can be considered programming, so the same holds.

i use notepad++ for all twhl3 work. frames are to be avoided at all costs.

Yes, NotePad++ is the official TWHL Developers Tool. I used it to do all the markup and PB coded like a mofo with it.

Don't be offended if we shoot down certain suggestions btw: we have taken onboard a fair few suggestions from members in the past, so don't think we hate you or anything like that. :P

I'm cool with you guys, no bad blood here. Besides, TWHL3 looks complete and functional the way it is now. After all, one of my favorite sayings is: "If it's not broken, don't fix it". Oh by the way, so you know, I am working on a solution to the Firefox/Opera non-compatibility issue with my Half Life/VRML website. I will be posting soon a new update thread once I get something worked out.
Posted 16 years ago2008-04-30 23:22:37 UTC Post #249456
It's not actually complete, the recent and top maps thing that was at the bottom of the front page in the last version is still MIA, yet to be superseded by a more functional doodad apparently. It's currently the one and only thing that breaks away the integration of the map vault from the rest of the site. I think it's the reason I never remember to go there anymore.

You know, when Tetsu0 brought up the idea of an easy button, it had me thinking. Sure, I know it's really sarcasm on his part, but still, I think he was on to something. So, to see how an easy button would actually look like somewhere on TWHL's header, I came up with this:

Now, putting on the easy button is easy (pardon the pun), but I have a feeling coming up with the easy button cgi form script to make the button work might not be so easy, but that's just me.
