Hi all ! I just bought a new video card : Ati Radeon HD 4850 . My problem , is , sure .... a hammer editor problem . Yes I can select everything in the 3D view and I can use all the tools without problems . But it has a low framerate !!!! Does anybody know how to solve this problem ? ( I think it's a driver options problem , the settings with mipmapping , antialiasing bla bla bla ) .

Any help will be really appreciated . ( I think this happens because in hammer you can't set the video quality ... I guess ...)

Oh , and another thing : I can't run any half-life 1 game in OpenGL mode !!!!

Google "Ati Radeon HD 4850 drivers". Download. See if things get any better.

Well that's easy to say , but I don't have so much time for all those drivers . I've installed the driver that came on the CD in that package .

Do as daube says, AA shouldnt cause any problems unless its a driver problem, if you dont want to do that then learn to live with it.

I heard that Ati catalyst 7.11 version is the most stable , but my fear is that it will downgrade some of the video card abbilties and performance .

Usually the latest driver should optimze your card for the best performance, there are a few talented people out there that make custom drivers that really should push your card to its limits.

That's impossible. Unless, of course, the drivers are older than your card.

I remember having that problem with a X1900XTX, turns out it was running in Direct3D and had to switch to OpenGL so that is definitely your problem.

However, I can't remember how I solved the issue, but have you check ATIs control panel for options?

What's wrong with the new Catalysts? Just because people don't think they're as "stable" as an older release doesn't mean anything.

Just don't use the beta drivers, because then you're taking a risk.

Go here and pick the latest:

Yes , ok . I can currently run Colin Mcrae Dirt Demo with max details at a resolution of 1024x"Idon't know" with 30-40 fps . After installing 7.11 , will it be worse ?

Why ask these questions? We don't own your GFX card. Try it and see, you can always revert to older drivers if things get worse.

I can't install the 7.11 driver !!! It says I don't have the required hardware . Ok . Hey , who made this driver ? Fuck you !

[Edit] I am desperate . If anyone knows how to make it possible to run opengl , I love you .

No. This is going crazy . The video card is constantly sitting at 79 degrees C in idle and 80-85 when it is used . Somebody suggested me to hack a file to change the fan speed , but that file even doesn't exists !!
And OpenGL doesn't work :(( . Hammer works but at a very low framerate . I can't play half-life in software mode !! ( the direct 3D mode doesn't work either )

[EDIT] Can it be the Video Card's Fault ?

It seems that the driver was the problem :)) and the windows too :)) .
I installed 8.6 and counterstrike works in opengl . Yay !
But let's get back to the real problem . A new problem . Just like in the sticky done by Muzzle Flash.
I can't select anything in the 3dview ( now it has superb framerate ) nor in the texture selection tool . the problem is , I can't downgrade to the 7.11 version of catalyst . I refuses to install ( my video card is quite new ) .
Now , please , give me some help with this . I should have bought Nvidia . It sucks but the drivers won't .

I did try to tell you to get Nvidia.
Nvidia are a bunch of fucktards. Ok they did the 8800 and it pwns, but what have they done since it? Nothing, and as they owned the graphic cards market they've been abusing on the prices. Look at the GTX280, it was going to cost 600 $, when ATI a announced the HD4870 that costs 300 $ they lower the price to 500 $, and The GTX280 is like 10% better than the HD4870. Notice all the money Nvidia was trying to steal us, and they're still doing, that's why I'm happy of the 4870 and 4850 because now Nvidia will try to make the things better and will put competitive prices, not all the shit they've been selling to us.
Posted 16 years ago2008-07-18 09:25:59 UTC Post #252621
It's called a new product, as has been the usual way since the stone ages. When a new card arrives it's bloody expensive, but the prices start to drop as soon as a follow up comes, and they get lower each month, really simple and everyone knows that. ATI plays the very same game, so that really isnt an argument.
Posted 16 years ago2008-07-18 09:32:30 UTC Post #252622
oh yeah but Ati prices are the half of the nvidia ones with similar perfomance. And no, Nvidia has been abusing. They told us GTX280 would be awesome, new technologi and all the stuff, but it has the same perfomance as the 9800 Gx2. ATI deserve to win this battle for making a great g.card that cheap.
Posted 16 years ago2008-07-18 10:02:21 UTC Post #252623
ACtualy, the 9800 chip has been based of the 8800. ATI's cards are OK, but if you really need power then you can squeeze the most out of Nvidia, that is why a lot of people prefer that stuff. I got to say though, ATI made some great cards in there history(9800 radeon).

Contact ATI and tell them to make better drivers then...

Yeah that's hell of a shit solution .
Maybe they'll tell me " Dude , did you bought this card to play half-life 1 ?! lol dude "
Or maybe they'll respect me as a client and help me ......

Yeah that's hell of a shit solution .
It's the only valid solution. Hammer and Half-Life have been used by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. There are no major fundamental flaws in either of the two programs. So any errors are on your side, in this case it's your drivers. Nvidia can make drivers that works flawlessly with Hammer and Half-Life so why can't ATI?

You bought a cheap videocard from a vendor that provides shitty drivers. Live with it!

Maybe if enough customers complain about it, ATI will make better drivers?

There's a guy with the same problem (solved) on tf2maps.net forums, look there on offtopic.

Actually , I have Ati catalyst 8.6 . The newest one .

Ati is not shit , it only has problems with the drivers . The first major problem I've observed is that it works perfect in applications with their own video settings , but it doesn't work well with the other applications . Such as Half-Life 1 . In half-life 1 with the Nvidia card all was smooth . Now , with the Ati card all is sharp and looking at the textures from distance they appear blured .

A driver problem is considered a major problem in hardware and coding circles.
Posted 16 years ago2008-07-18 19:30:36 UTC Post #252638
I can't wait for ati catalyst 8.7
If it won't work be able to work with hammerwith that driver , I'll reinstall de old video card and it's drivers on the computer .
Of course I'll put ati back when I'll be bored of mapping. :D

But that's only if I won't be able to resolve this problem at all . I really want to run hammer from this video card . I'm too lazy to switch between these video card :((
