Saw this a few days ago, and I still can't help but wonder what this is.

It looks like the Citadel but Valve said they won't be going back.

It is just concept, though, so maybe it's someone just having fun.

Gordon and an advicor inside something that kinda looks like the citadel.
Maybe THE citadel wasn't the only citadellish building in the world.
I'm guessing it's like the base for the high combine.

Well, we already know the Citadel wasn't the only one of it's kind. They mentioned it wasn't somewhere, not sure where, but I remember that specifically.

EDIT: Or maybe the Citadel was somehow teleported (See: The Borealis) and they are in the teleported ruin.

There should be a wiki for the Half-life story, so that you could look up different things such as the borealis, which I am very confused about what it is.

SPOILERS AHEAD

The Borealis (My definition) - A ship owned / created by Aperature science labs, supposedly very mythical and almost a legend, but very real.

It disappeared off the drydock it was being worked on at one day, along with a huge chunk of the drydock itself, leading you to believe it was somehow teleported somewhere.

It was supposed to be this experimental vessel, but not much is explained of what it was for.

In Episode 2, it was revealed that the location of the ship was discovered somewhere in the north. You and Alyx were about to go to a helicopted to search for the boat, but then you get stopped by those overwatch thingies, and Vance is killed.

Thus Episode 2 ends.

So far we know what Borealis was.
What it is will be revealed in Ep3.
My guess would be it's currently under combine control and possibly has something to do with the advisors (some kind of central avisor hub for Earth?). Also, we should expect some arctic version of antlions to occupy the wastelands as well as new weaker monsters to cover for headcrabs/zombies/etc., which can't possibly exist in the cold.
And I bet the helicopter you'll be flying will somehow crash somewhere near borealis. That'd leave you in a weaponless condition (just like prev. HL games) and would provide a wider array of gameplay environments than just the ship.

which can't possibly exist in the cold.
I doubt that :P

I'm kinda expecting to see that one boss thing they didn't include in Half Life 2 because it didn't fit with the game or something. You know, that weird thing that there's a picture of it stabbing a combine with a blue tentacle thing. That's about all we see.

It had something to do with the icebreaker, I think.

But yah, I think it's definitely under combine control, or something's on it that the combine want / need, and it's gonna be like a race to get there before they do to get it yourself.

Whatever happens, it's gonna be awesome.

Oh yeah, I was sooo looking forward to facing that blue thing, but no :<
I hope they find a way to put it in there.

This is a stupid question since I have played through portal and ep2, and I know that I knew the answer for about 3 weeks ago.. How do we know that there is a connection with The Borealis and Aparture Science?
I just can't remember, my memory is so shitty.

Also, I do not think that they will replace the headcrabs with something else just cuz there is snow.
Xen is nothing like earth, yet they somehow managed to survive in the hostile enviroments of the desert.
There has been some time now, and so perhaps the headcrabs has found a way to survive in the cold.
They will probably act the same way as they do in sand; jump around and then burry themselves.

And yes, the helicopter will crash. If it didn't, it wouldn't be half-life. ;)

How do we know that there is a connection with The Borealis and Aparture Science?
When Alyx thinks that the Borealis was fake / a myth, Kleiner explains to her that it's real, then goes into the back story, directly saying it's Aperture Science's doing.

Oh right. :P

Things are starting to make sense.
What do they want to do on the borealis anyways?
What's so important about it?

And ain't that the ship which you were supposed to be on in HL2, but they removed it from the final version?

I don't think they specify what's exactly on the Borealis, but I don't remember that too well.
It could just be that the combine want the ship, so they think something important is on it.

The original ship was an icebreaker, so it's probably not the same ship.

If you haven't noticed, that man standing there is DEFINITELY holding a crowbar, indicating Gordon. Since they'll be out in the Arctic, and this looks very combine like, I am guessing that some sort of teleportation device is on the Borealis and will take us to the Combine homeworld. Kinda of like a mimic of Half-Life.

So it seems the combine already got to the Borealis.

Than I'm guessing the first shot is just the combine stuff within the ice around the Borealis.

So many things could be possible I can't even guess.

Do you think the gravity gun will be converted to a portal gun in Episode 3?

Maybe the conversion will occur on Borealis.

If Valve know what's good for the Half-Life series I hope they never give us the portal gun.

I still think Aperture had their own Anti-Mass Spectrometer or equivalent portal tech onboard the Borealis. I'd say the Combine want whatever it is to reconnect with their homeworld, and Kleiner probably wants it to force them out or contact the rest of the Vortigaunts.

A trip to the Combine homeworld would be ace.

Indeed.

What I do want though is:
  • To kill an advisor! :furious:
  • Classic Xen Creatures
  • Some info about the G-Man
  • A new weapon or 2

But wasn't it Kleiner that DIDN'T want the Borealis to be used? Or maybe that was Eli.
Either way, we stopped their second portal storm before it happened, and if the Borealis is REALLY this important, then it's probably their best chance at finally over-taking Earth.
Either way, one party from the humans did NOT want it to be used. The other did, more than likely to send Gordon to the Combine home-world and destroy them from the inside out just as he did to Xen by killing Nihilanth.
ValvE is known for their amazing series, I highly doubt they'd ruin it in such a way, and if they did implement the portal gun, I don't think the use of it would be very long.
In fact, I believe that if they did, they'd do it Super Gravity Gun style. Some machine malfunctions giving the Gravity gun temporary Portal abilities.

Me thinks it's pretty obvious. Clearly the Borealis has been captured by the Combine and that's when Judith spotted it stuck in-between the ice glaciars...It looks like they have converted it into a base or power source...perhaps they'll use the portal technology to call for reinforcements after you closed the Citadel portal.
I'm kinda expecting to see that one boss thing they didn't include in Half Life 2 because it didn't fit with the game or something. You know, that weird thing that there's a picture of it stabbing a combine with a blue tentacle thing. That's about all we see.
As pointed out, Hydra and it'll most likely never return as it sucks. Owns too much. Try fighting one in the countless mods.

I did after I learned some cheats. I hate games that throw friggin everything at you at the end and expect you to live. :/ kinda cliche and doesn't usually fit some games. HL2 was done right tho.

ya know I don't like that last screen, I've seen better from amateurs. You sure thats real?

Heh, I remember having to outrun a Gargantua to someplace. Plus the way Nihilanth teleports you away all the time was rather irritating.

Even I look forward to Ep3. 3 seems to be a prime number now-a-days for stuff to be the ending. Too many Trilogies to tally.

Half-Life probably isn't going to end with Episode 3, though... Too much stuff left to cover, unless they're planning on turning Episode 3 into a full-length game like Half-Life 2. And that doesn't seem likely considering how limited the idea of running around on a ship is.
Posted 15 years ago2008-07-17 00:12:45 UTC Post #252576
And then it wouldn't be Episode 3... it would be Half-Life 3.

He'll almost certainly have to. Valve isn't stupid, they know everyone's tired of fighting endless hordes of combine soldiers.

I used to kill Gargantuas with grenades. It'd take 10 grenades if thrown correctly. I didn't like running from them, it was too tense for me.
But i managed to finish hl without cheats. I hate the idea of using cheats to finish a game, i don't feel any pleasure doing that.

What were you, like 4?

I'm not sure if I ever beat HL1 without cheats before. I was too young to know how to be a good FPS player, anyhow.

Haven't cheated in any FPS since, though.
