I just came across this story, and it just blew my mind away. It's just amazing on how much time some people have on their hands, and in this case, money too. I know Warcraft gamers are one of the most loyal players to their game, but damn,....even this case has to be a bit extreme, even to Warcraft standards. Anyway, here's what I found:
Gamer juggles over 30 Warcraft characters
Meet the mad king of Azeroth.
By Ben Silverman - Yahoo games

Think you play too much World of Warcraft? Compared to "Prepared," you don't. In a case of game addiction gone officially bananas, gaming blog Joystiq reports on what is surely the biggest Warcraft fan of them all. Known only under the moniker "Prepared," the gamer plays a stunning 36 World of Warcraft accounts on 11 different computers...simultaneously. Stemming from a desire to manage raids - large-scale gameplay sessions that typically require the teamwork of multiple players - all by himself, the die-hard gamer seems undaunted by both the financial and lifestyle commitments to such a geeky endeavor. "It costs me exactly $5711 in subscription costs per year with 36 accounts on the 6 month pay schedule," he writes. "Not bad considering I'm looking at it like it's a hobby and there are more expensive hobbies out there than World of Warcraft." Like yachting, perhaps. And despite the downturn in the economy, Prepared can't wait to get his hands on the upcoming Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. "I lan to be at the store when it opens and will purchase 36 copies of it. With tax, it should be about $1500 for all of them. "Word of Prepared's over-the-top addiction comes on the heels of the annual Blizzcon Convention, a fan-oriented celebration of the games created by Warcraft publisher Blizzard.
Here is what the gaming setup of this "Prepared" looks like:

It's not that strange, nothing says he spends 10 hours a day playing. If you find this strange then go look up some flightsim enthusiasts, there willing to spend the same amount on building a cockpit.

What I meant was the massive amount of hardware involved, not to mention all that cash needed to pay to keep this going. Surely you don't find this normal.

I can assure, that i have seen and used hardware combinations that had more money and hours spend on them then this set-up so no, im not really amazed.

edit: I mean, look at it this way, if he would be spending 24/h a day playing this game then he wouldnt be able to afford such a set-up, nor would it look pretty decent, cleaning must take quite some time.

A hobby is a hobby. Like he said himself, he pays less a year than most hobbies.

Doesn't stop him from being the biggest waste of life ever, however.

Isnt that a bit judgemental, your basicly saying that every single person that plays WoW is a waste of life. Which isnt really a realistic view.

Those mouses aren't that bad when you get used to them. Also they make sense in another way; they save room in that they dont need mousepads.

Not having to move a mouse helps with the space issues when that many computers is involved.

Some game blog site by the name "TecheBlog.com" asked Prepared on how he controls so many characters at once, they stated this:

Its called duel-boxing, its a completely legal hack as far as WoWHQ are concerned due to the fact you need to pay for more than one account. The hack allows you on any computer with any number of screens to run two separate windows and control all players at once with a program like autohotkey.

I have no idea about the need of so many mousses. That hardware setup of his is beyond me, I have not seen anything like it before, other than what I have seen in command & control rooms while I was in the military years ago. Which brings me to a little question: Now that this guy has been brought out wide in the open by the press, I wonder how long till somebody else out there tries to surpass him in the number of simultaneous accounts?

That made me chuckle. It really did.

In my opinion, spending that much time and money into something that doesn't help anyone, makes him a waste of life. I could spend ten hours a day mapping, but granted, I'm doing something semi useful.

This is just another thing that reminds me I made the right decision on giving up MMO's while I still had a grasp of my sanity.

Multiboxing is becoming quite common in WoW. Sometimes I come across someone who's playing 4-5 characters at once using dual/multiboxing. It's annoying to face multiboxers in combat but it is legal, allthough in my mind Autohotkey constitutes as a third party software, which is disallowed. It all comes down to money of course, some nerds are willing to pay 4 times as much money each month so naturally it's allowed by Blizzard :P

EDIT: I wonder what that guy pays in electricity bills each month ;D
Posted 16 years ago2008-10-15 21:59:39 UTC Post #257163
Third party software is completely allowed until someone catches you.

Reminds me of something my friend once said, it went like this:
Your not doing anything wrong until you get caught.
I have some rather interesting friends.

I think everyone should print those pics out and put them up on their wall as a constant reminder that if your desk ever ends up looking like that, it's time to shoot yourself.

I'm not going to judge someone for playing a little WoW, but 36 accounts?! 36 accounts/copies/whatever of any game is just ridiculous.

Of course Blizzard is going to allow multiboxing, it's in their best financial interest. They know once people start confronting these multiboxers more frequently, the honest, single character player out there will have no choice but to also become a multiboxer, and therefore remain competitive on equal terms with the other multiboxing players. It will be like an arms race, the best player will not be decided by who has the best gaming skills, but by who has the most simultaneous accounts. And who will benefit the most out of this? Why good'ol Blizzard of course. CACH'ING - CACH'ING - CACH'ING.......

Well, I am glad to see somebody was as dismayed as I was with this. Hey Strider, why don't you try to invite this "Prepared" guy to join TWHL, maybe he could hook us up with some spare laptops for free.

Edit: Ooops, double post, my bad. Sorry.....

He'd probably set up 36 accounts and surf TWHL on 36 seperate browsers. ;)

It's better for people to go nuts over WoW than other things.

I know parents who beat their children until they're unconscious. A two-year-old girl was kicked to death by her step-father. People get behind bars because they microwaved their babies to death.

At least WoW doesn't hurt other people.

I'm beginning to think at wow as at the anticrist .

WTF PEOPLE , 36 accounts , 11 computers ? Pure waste of money . I really feel sorry for that guy . Staying that amount of hours in front of his computers surely reduces his lifespan . :death:

I can find you a dozen. I mean, i own serval soldering irons, i could get around with one yes, but certain jobs would take longer, or would be harder to complete.

As satchmo mentioned, he doesnt hurt anyone. And i got hobby's im willing to spend just as much money on, does that make me worse then him? No it doesnt, as long as people are not hurting anyone else then you should just let em be.

I heard of a guy and his G/F who had this kinda setup aswell. Can't remember where I saw it. I think they used it for goldfarming though so they got stinking rich off it.

I had 6 months free of WoW and that was enough time for me to learn all the shit, get to grips with controls and such, level up a few times and finally, get mind bendingly bored of the whole thing. I bought the expansion a few months later and paid for another month, then got bored again and quit altogether.

WoW is quite fun to play actually, yet addictive at the same time. But who am I to doubt that combination? Surely there are negative side-effects to that combo, but look at the bright side; atleast when you're addicted you will find it money well spend anyway.

Personally, I enjoy WoW for a while. I played the beta, waaaaay back. I then played about 2-3 months after it released officialy as a full game. Then I quited.... returned for 4 months to try Burning Crusade, and now it has been almost a year since I last played WoW. Probably won't play the next expension tho, since my computer will have problems handling.

Anyways, to get on point, who are we to judge? Do what you care for, i'd say.

Most definitely.

spawn times, random loot, lockout timers, extremely long level up processes? All designed specifically to get you hooked and paying their subscription fee for as long as possible. This "multiboxing" is just the newest installment into their monetary campaign.

Whoever came up with the idea of WoW (and most MMO's in general) are all freakin financial geniuses.

Not financial geniuses. They just jumped on the MMO wagon somewhat early, and blizzard has very good quality games. The quality of blizzard in combination with loads of advertisement is what makes them the 'geniuses' they are.

Eve-online is also a very good quality MMO for those who like space games. It has a whole lot of "sophisticated" enjoyment, but not as much of a visual side. What is there visually is rather good, there's just not as much of it. It is extremely 'expansive' though. It has a fully working dynamic player-driven economy, several thousand different systems you can go to, and more ship customization than you could ever hope to want, heh.

I would like to also think it is fake too, but the truth is, I think it is real. Not only has this story been all over the net already, it's also in the mainstream media as well, like CNN, FOX News & MSNBC. And I hear Wire magazine is going to cover this too on their next issue, as well as PC Gamer. As scary as it might sound, freaks like this "Prepared" guy actually do exist out there.......
