So if you thought school shootings were bad, I think this will do you one better: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/12/boy_killed_mom_and_shot_dad_ov.html
Mark Petric testified that his son came up behind him as he sat on the couch and said, "Would you guys close your eyes? I have a surprise for you."
How sick is that?

Yeah it is rather sad and I recall reading a part where the dad said:

"You're my son no matter what" as if he forgave him :S

What a terrible way to go.

His age kind of explains it. People just seem to be so damned spoilt, sensitive or stuck-up at this age that they do all kinds of crazy shit. This is bad, but certainly not the worst.

Mind you, I can practically see the shitstorm to follow.

Such a bad argument. A kid could grow up in a ultra conditioned environment, but if he's crazy, than he's crazy. Even though the article talks of no mental health issues, such an act just shows how sane he really was.

If he, himself, can not judge right from wrong, than he can die in jail and I hope he does.

Potatis, I'm sure mommy and daddy where far from perfect in order to raise a child that would do such a thing. But obviously they didn't deserve it, and anyone who would take the life of another human being is disgusting.

Glad they are not considering the death penalty though.

No idea. I enjoyed it, but it's certainly no Half-Life.

I honestly believe this has nothing to do with the actual video game... It's more along the lines of this kid had something he really wanted taken away. If he was a musician and his father took away his guitar he probably would have done the same thing. All I'm trying to say is this story will lead to video games getting bashed once again when it might actually not have anything to do with them. Does anyone agree with me?

Halo has the worst fanboys, and people's hate for the fanboys tranfers over to the game. There's an association between "halo" and "screeching fucktard".
Posted 15 years ago2008-12-16 23:38:10 UTC Post #260118
And now there's an association between "Halo" and "homicidal maniac."

Jack Thompson couldn't have planned it better himself.

I hate the article though, they immediately preface Halo 3 as a violent video game (aliens are people too!), and later his dad describes it as sexually explicit. Seems like everything would have been fine if they'd just let him play his shitty game every once in a while, like every other sensible parent.

Its absolute shit becuase the story is like one big orgy of cliches. The multiplayer might've actually been really fun to play (and some of the times I did it was fun) but unfortunately its flooded with pimply teens and screaming 12 year olds.

Its better for it to be called "My first FPS".

What really annoys me is that the anti-gun and anti-violent game crowds are gonna be all over this. Even though this was entirely the fault of the individual committing the crime (and possibly poor parenting).

You know, it's funny about all this bashing on Halo, and not just here, but on a few more other gaming sites as well, and yet, whenever the next Halo comes out, not only will people start to camp out on front of stores days before the game goes on sale, but it will most likely break some sales records and outsell Halo 3's massive game launch day. Sure, the Halo series is not perfect, but is not that bad either. Now I do admit Halo 3 was a bit of a let down.

It's Halo 3's fault of course, not the fact that his dad (like every other american it seems) had a gun in the house...

I'm not defending the kid, he's clearly got some issues, but you'd see a lot less of shit like that if everyone and everything wasn't packing heat.

That would be nice if it were the case, but there were plenty of brutal murders before guns. In absence of the gun, most likely he would have done something like taking a knife from the kitchen and slitting his parents' throats from behind. Psychopaths will use whatever they can get their hands on; be it a gun, knife, blunt object, even improvised explosives (IEDs).

What we really need to address is the mental health problem in this country. Too many lunatics here.

Well, maybe he should be given a chance to earn forgiveness. How you ask? Simple: He likes to kill for real and play FPS games, right? Well, I say send him to Iraq. And when ever a suspected terrorist's IED (Improvised Explosive Device) is found, also known as a road side bomb, he will then be ordered to go towards the suspected IED, poke it with a stick, and if it does not explode, he just simply moves on to the next one, thus keeping our troops safe. Now, if he does manage to survive all the IED's, if some time in the future U.S. forces find and surround a terrorist hide out, our good Halo' boy will be sent in as a messenger boy to deliver a surrender note to the terrorists that will read: "Screw all you punk ass bitches and fags, and surrender to Uncle Sam". Of course, he might or might not come out alive after reading that to the terrorists, but at least he will be on his way to earning that Presidential pardon.

PS: Was that too much?

Tito I wasn't calling you a Halo fanboy at all... I was pointing out how people do crazy nonsensical stuff all the time for things they love, for no reason except that they're fans of it. Most kids out there own five year old Dells and are unaware of any gaming experience outside of the latest three consoles. They've also been bombarded with a kajillion magazine articles about how great the next Halo game is going to be because of blah blah blah, and of course it's all their friends can talk about. It's the cool thing to do. That's where you get your long-ass early morning lines from.

That's completely irrelevant. Yes there are brutal murders comitted without guns, but guns surely don't help as this incident clearly shows. And you can't know that the kid would use a kitchen knife instead. Psychologists have stated that stabbing someone and shooting someone is basically like night and day, stabbing is more personal. That's why you can't assume he'd whack his parents some other way if he didn't have the gun at his disposal. There is no "most likely".
Seriously though, look at the guy. He looks like a loon.
Hehe, I thought so too, he looks simian in a strange way :P
Posted 15 years ago2008-12-17 19:01:26 UTC Post #260172
It's true, he probably wouldn't have had the guts if he'd been faced with physically gashing his parents open and having their blood spill all over his hands. Plus he'd have been more easily apprehended if all he had was a knife. Those murders take time and skill. You can be completely detached from the situation and still shoot somebody.
Posted 15 years ago2008-12-17 19:23:23 UTC Post #260174
Plain sad. Both sides (parents & child) are more-or-less equally guilty here imo. Improper raising brings up the worst little fuckers, plus it's quite rare for someone, especially a kid, to commit acts like that without pressure/influence from his environment. This story is just taking that fact to most insane extents.
His father, Mark, a minister at New Life..
Weird thing for a minister to pack a gun in his house. I smell religious fanatics.

Those swellings on his eyes look like they came from loads of crying. Note the tissue box beside him.

You missed my point entirely. The point I'm trying to make is that people love to put the blame on whatever they can. Yes, firearms certainly make killing someone easier, however statistics clearly show that firearms do not contribute to crime. In fact, the FBI's latest crime report shows, that despite gun ownership in the US being at an all-time high, murders are down 43% since 1991, and violent crime has dropped 38%. Also, versus national average, right-to-carry states (states that allow you to carry a firearm in public) have a 28% lower murder rate, 50% fewer robbery incidents, and 24% lower overall violent crime rates.

I'm not trying to sway your opinion on firearm ownership necessarily, but mass media loves to paint an inaccurate picture of things. Let's not point the finger at guns or at violent games. There was something clearly wrong with this guy, and chances are he would have harmed someone in his lifetime, with or without a gun and without ever playing a violent game.

Tbh, I think experience evolves life. What I'm trying to say is... that when somebody has a aggresive nature, that either can be stimulated or toned down. Certain experiences and methods happened in that somebody's life either stimulate or tone down that aggresive nature; this is different for every person, it's one of those things that make us unique and complicated beings. Anyways, I do think violent games can stimulate aggresion if that persons 'refencechart' (hopefully you know what I mean, can't get the English word for it) is completely messed up due taken experiences in life. Humans are emotional beings, and when you're not stable... you can very easyly be influenced. However, I wouldn't go as far as say 'games create violence' simply because that depends on the person - and luckyly most people have a decent enough sense of mind to know what's right from wrong.

Possible, but given it he is an aggresive person with a twisted sense of mind and his father stimulating that by lockin' up what's so dearly to him, the game.. he figured where the game was, and stupidly enough the gun was right besides it. In a act of rage choices are easyly made. He made the wrong one.

About mass media en firearms ownership.. what says the FBI's report is completely true to fact? I might go far with this, but even in 'great' America propaganda lives. Sounds rather logical tho, the FBI wanting to create a sense of safety for America's citizenship.

/end rant - Heh, I got carried away. Forgive me for my broken English and conspirecy theories, haha.

True. For example the US army lets film makers use army personnel, army bases and footage for free but only if the movies they are making gives a "good" image of the US army and of American wars.
