Sweet, i can pull my ww2 American destroyer out of mothballs, or maybe i'll dare to try it in source... (probably not because at source i'm balls, aww)

This isn't map a "sea ship" but map a "space/flying airctaft" ship... Does annyone else want to enter this one or do yall want to just come up with another theme by proposing an idea and seing if everyone else wants to. Once one is proposed that everyone likes we'd do it.

I thought it was a map a ship, that could be an airship, spaceship, sea ship, bath tub ship etc....

I vote for Map a Ship. I want to try my hand at designing a space transport or similar.

It is a flying/space ship. So what should there be to limits besides what hammer can handle? Just map a "ship" And whoever's is the "neatest, coolest, most creative and aspiring wins.

Check out my metroid ship, muzzleflash's beans with bacon ship, and Tlax's space lasercore ship(refresh the front page until you see it in the "top maps") for inspiration.

Yea its a "mini" compo, all of the judgement will be focused on the ship itself. Gameplay is always a cool touch though. Well time to begin sketchin! When I wake up tomorrow that is. Oh yea and check out "srry's" ship. He only mapped the interior.

I was hoping to do a waterborne ship but i have an idea of what i can do for a spaceship. It'll be in goldsource tho, cuz i don't think i'd be able to build what i'm thinking of, with source's geometry hangups...

Design a flying aircraft/spaceship.

(1)You may choose to map either exterior, interior, or both.

(2)The ship must atleast appear to fly and be enterable/ operable by someone.

(3)Size of the ship can vary from a small single person craft to an entire interior map of a ship.

(4)Judgement will be based on functionality, brushwork, form, creativity, impression, and overall skills used to create the ship.

(5)Be creative! Look at all of the ships mentioned above for inspiration, all of them are acceptable entrances to this competition.

(6)Judgement method and deadline will be discussed soon. Start as soon as possible to give yourself as much time as needed. Estimated deadline will be two to four weeks.

Goldsource.. Source just takes too long to compile in my opinion and some people's comp. cant handle it. Well I guess if you wanted you could start a thread for a source one.

Skals, do even read any of the posts before you say something? People have been going on about the seaborne/airborne thing since halfway through this thread! Incidentally, that means that the decision on mapping a ship has been there for that long too!

Zeebs has already said that if all the entries were of a different kind of ship, it's a very uneven playing field! They're pretty much completely different themes! And...

I'm having a lot of fun playing with this. So much so in fact, i'm considering putting my other projects on pause, and doing a short sp mod or Star Wars machinima spoof of the Clone Wars! I can make the hologram lady Padme, and the gman or one of the scientists Palpatine, and obviously Lamar for Mace Windu. (Maybe use the "fat baby" for Yoda somehow...)

I've always wanted to make ships/airplanes like that, but I always ran into problems with the player having to crouch and fit into the ship

It almost looks there captain, that the player is sitting! How do you do that?

Anyway, despite being on the verge of collapsing from a cold, I'm going to start on mine. Hope you don't mind captain, but I'm gonna do another star wars ship, I'm thinking an E-wing.

Oh i don't mind, i've never heard of an E-Wing! (looks like a Battlestar Galactica transport lol)

ran into problems with the player having to crouch and fit into the ship

the only problem i've found is that my ships canopy was blockin the player, even though it was the vertical position. I fixed may making it "passable" (or not solid) and making an invisible block that keeps the player in the ship when you close the canopy. (you might have to make parts of your cockpit func_illusionary, and use clip brushes to put the player at the proper height, to be able to fit inside properly)

Ok, thanks, I'll try those pointers. (I'm now at the point where I'm done with the exterior geometry and I can work on the cockpit.

The E-wing is part of the expanded universe, IE: books and such, not the movies.

Hopefully tommorow, if time allows, I can get a rough cockpit done and upload some WIP screens.

Yea when I made my metroid hunter, I had to make the chair func_illusionary to fit. Im going to make this ship from scratch. I want to make a neat way to enter and exit it.

Pretty soon I can start building the environment for the map. I know it's not the focus of the contest, but i'm looking forward to making Padme's apartment on Coruscant. Hopefully it turns out ok....

The glass really doesn't do the ship justice. I think it would look a lot better with a custom, darker glass texture.

I love the wheel thing in the front of the cockpit, definitely the most interesting thing on the ship, and I can't imagine the brushwork that took.

Yeah i know. I've tried a bunch of different canopy textures and i've been happy with none of them. I'll keep working on it tho..

The wheel thing was nothing to do. Making the segmented main part of the cockpit/canopy was hard:

Take a three-segmented strip, each made up of 6, 4-sided triangles, and vm them to the right slope or curve of the cockpit. Rotate 30 degrees and connect to the first strip, while getting it ready to connect to the next. (It becomes very difficult to manipulate segments once they've been rotated at all) Repeat 12 times (the cockpit is 12-sided), make sure there are no vertices off-grid, and BAM! you're done. = )

Anyway, here is my mostly finished jedi starfighter for download!
features:
-canopy opens and closes using "e" (you can crouch inside and close the canopy)
-"foils" open using the green button. (they won't close fsr even though they are set to toggle)
-Highly-detailed cockpit with a Techno Union Starfighter targeting hologram

Lemme know what you think, and i'll try to include suggestive changes for the final release of the map, which i plan to:

-add working lazors you can fire from inside
-recreate "padme's apartment" from the Star Wars:ROTS
-Make the thing fly somehow

If you port that fighter into Source (Ep2) you can add all kinds of thruster entities to it to make it fly. Somewhat.
