I know about the solution given by TMA, it works. It Half-Works.
It resolves the 3D selecting problem, but it generates a truck load of lag , or slow framerate, or low fps or whatever you want to call it. The thing is, the map begins to be unexplorable after I build just a single room( with details).
I suspect mainly the textures. I think catalyst can't handle well textures ...
I turned off texture filtering from hammer, fps increased a bit , textures looked like hell, but the lag persists. Still not solved.

I made a video on youtube so you can see the problem visually ( I'm explaining what's not working)

You could try disabling texture filtering in tools->options->3D views

It probably won't do anything, to be honest, but it's worth a shot.

It's the same for me, it sucks.
If you resize the 3D preview box, making it smaller, it will run faster.

EDIT:
@World Crafter: it speeds it up a lot, but everything looks really, REALLY wierd.

I reluctantly agree with you Yodalman, but it's not a very useful suggestion...

I just thought of a possible stab-in-the-dark solution to your problem, when i was experiencing unexplainable fps lag in hammer. I had just added a second HDD and started experiencing lag in the 3d window, that would get progressively worse with time, no matter if i was looking at a complex map or not.

It turned out to be directly related to adding the second HDD, and i found the answer by a suggesion from someone on another forum. If you've recently installed or have a second HDD, try this quick fix:

in vista:
1. go to control panel/power options, and click on the "change when the computer sleeps" link.
2.click on the "advanced power settings" link.
3. expand hardisk/turn harddrive off after, and select "never" for all harddrives.

I know this problem has probably nothing to do with your HDDs and more to do with your gfx card, but it's worth a try...

Have you only read the title ? Look what I said :

Please, read it all. Or just watch the video :(

Captain Terror : No that doesn't work for me. I'm using windows xp 32bit, and it's already on "never".

Something makes me feel like that too.

What's View Flat ?
Report it to ATI...
Reported and posted on their forums one year ago (when I bought the video card). Do I see any results ? ~10 v of catalysts have passed. Nothing !

You might as well try using Hammer 4 for Goldsrc if you're still having this problem.

Something makes me feel that the wait is causing members to throw grammar and spelling out of the window. :rly:
