I'm looking for a good freeware alternative to fraps. You know, video, audio, unlimited record times as long as they don't exeed memory, good framerate, ect. Can anybody suggest something? Thanks in advance.

So the framerates are better in-game than desktop? because I did a few tests with just moving the mouse pointer, and the framerates were'nt that good.

Guys, he's looking for game recording, not all round recording.

If you're trying to record something in source engine, google "source recorder". otherwise, i don't have any other suggestions i haven't already told you (shoutbox)

I've never had a problem with Fraps. If you don't like Fraps because it "slows down your computer", imagine what your computer feels like trying to encode video (a very CPU-intensive task) and run a video game (also very CPU-intensive) at the same time. By definition, both applications are designed to use 100% of the CPU, so of course you're going to get some slowdown. Fraps is pretty much the best one, so you may as well "buy" the full version of it.

Well, I have no credit card, so Fraps is out of the option. I have the trial version, but it sucks. Camstudio MAY work, I don't know yet. Whatever gets the school project done best, I suppose.

@raver:
Uhmm.....you just might have put yourself on the admin's radar as a "blip", be careful on what exactly you post on the forum. I don't think you crossed the line yet, but I think you at least stepped on it a bit. Use the PM the next time for stuff like this.

Get gamecam, you can use the free demo thingy magigy for a presumably infinite time, you just can't record sound.

Source's built-in recorder is top-notch and doesn't require piracy. All you need is something like VirtualDub (which is free) to encode all the frames and audio into a video file, and you have complete control over quality.

That said, Source Recorder only works in, surprise, Source, so Fraps is a convenient program to keep around anyway.

And, not only that, you can max the setting to literally as high as your comp will let them go, same goes for resolution, then once you compile the video, guess what, a video containing full res & settings, locked at 30 fps, no lower, no higher, so no lag.

However, using sourcerecorder to record your video, it'll be VERY laggy, it's the final video that won't have lag.

Lastly, i recommend turning the resolution, settings, and all that other stuff to lowest, windowed mode too, for making the demo, then, turn everything to max like i said above, then start the recording process.

There's also Taksi, which is an open-source Fraps clone. The project's apparently dead, but the latest version works well enough.

only problem is, even if the video doesnt lag, you'll suck at whatever you do if you're laggin

not sure about source, but goldsource did have a built in movie maker. You type startmovie moviename fps in the console and it prints a series of bmps into the games folder. Eg. "startmovie movie1 25. You need demos to do this btw. You can then turn the pictures into a video with a program like videomach or something. This method gives by far the highest quality results, but takes a while.
