I had a whole bunch of various 3d models I did a few years ago in .3ds, .obj, and x3d, but were all lost when my previous old PC's hard drive decided to take a crap. Anyway, a few months ago I did a format conversion of Captain Terror's "StarCraft" game map to VRML with his permission. But now, I have it running live as a navigatable online world. This new version of the StarCraft map as a virtual world can be viewed without no need of additional browser plugins, because it now is rendered through a full screen Java applet! It does not matter which web browser you have, as long as your PC has Java enabled.
Before you click on the bottom link to enter in 3D, please read the following:
Once you load up the 3D Java applet, you will be prompted with a user login popup box. If you don't want to enter in chat mode with an avatar in front of you, then just close the popup box by clicking on the "X". If you want to try out the chat mode with the avatar, then for now click on "I'm a male guest". Then for the avatar's name, just put your own. Skip the password box, don't put anything there. Now go ahead and click on "Log in".

Use the keyboard arrows to walk around, and to look around, press and hold the right mouse button while dragging the mouse.

Well, if you are ready, check out Captain Terror's StarCraft in Java web-3D: http://www.3dxplorer.com/view.php?k=MTExMQ==
NOTE: The scene will take about 1 to 2 minutes load up, so give it some time.

The grass is nice... The house could be a bit bigger, and use some textures.

you should make the bullet spin, it will look like its moving more, and most guns are rifled these days anyway! Anyway, I was impressed, but what the hell was the thing in the end of the bullet, looked like some sort of reverse primer.

There are different tips for bullets. That might be a range round.
And i never got anything to animate in blender. Nor did i get any effects that were that sweet.
More power to ya striker.

Tito, that's too awesome ! But you should include a "noclip" mode and also ... make it faster will you ? :D
Also, how the hell did you succeeded to port a bsp format to a java application ? Oh, let me guess... you actually read a ".map" format manual ? :P

Thanks for the feedback. I'm now working on a TWHL logo or banner or whatever you like to call it, as a tribute to all I've learned from this place :^_^:
The TWHL "plate" is made in blender.

Nice to know you approved of it, The_(c)Striker. When you say "make it faster", I take it you mean making the first person (or avatar) navigation speed to move along more faster, right? If that's the case, yes,....I can do that. I will get to it as soon as I can and let you know when I do.

As for including a "noclip" mode, I will need you to elaborate a bit further on that, I am not sure exactly on what you mean. To be honest, I did not really port a bsp format file to a java application. What I did was, to first extract the bsp's mesh along with all it's textures using Crafty's export feature. Crafty can do this and save the map as a .obj 3d format file. From there, open the .obj model with any 3D editor that can open a .obj 3d file and save it to any of the following formats: .3DS, Collada or VRML. Why these three formats? Because these are the only ones that 3DXplorer.com uses for their 3D Java applets. As for reading a .map format manual, yea, I might have glanced through it once.

One thing you need to also know about this 3D Java applet platform from 3DXplorer.com, is that it is still in Beta development, so it is not perfect yet. But it is still fun though.

Yes. Noclip ? It's like typing sv_cheats 1 and then noclip in the halflife console, if you understand me.
Pool table! Yay!
That looks realistic :D

I'm going to ignore the obvious double entendre in that statement by saying that you can't really 'play' pool, but the balls are physically simulated. You can drop a grenade next to them or shoot them and send them flying. :D
That looks realistic :D
I hope that's not sarcasm :D . I'm not too happy with the holes, but making them pitch-black like that was the easiest way I could think of to deal with them.

Oh that....I have seen others do it, but I have not done it personally. The thing about the 3DXplorer.com 3D Java applet, is that it is basically a Java powered chat room, but in full 3D, that's all. It has no type of game engine built in to it, so no games can be played on it.

The only interactivity it has, is to move around with your 3D avatar, chat with others, play some embedded music or videos on the scene you might have and maybe activate some animated, moving objects, and that's it. So I don't think there is any equivalents of a Noclip for 3DXplorer's Java 3D Chat scenes, so no, sorry.

The only real, practical use this could have, is to maybe showcase some 3D models you might have made yourself in real time 3D in some "virtual showroom" of your creation. This way, anybody online can see them in actual 3D without downloading a browser plugin, gamer or non-gamer. This way, you can maximize the amount of people that can see your work.

I am not really preaching Java, just pointing out it's multi-browser, platform and OS's support. I myself don't like Java that much either, I find it to be somewhat resource hungry, thus slowing down the PC. The way I see it, it's just a "necessary evil" that one have to contend with, but at least, it's a manageable one. Hell, a lot of cell phones have Java built in to them, but I suspect it's mostly to play Java games. I think Java is one of those things that you either like it or hate it, no in betweens. It's use it's really a niche thing, it's not for everything or everybody.

Java isn't really a universally-installed program, though. You'd find that many people don't have Java installed, as opposed to say, Flash, which is apparently the most installed software in the world. (Even more installed than Windows, from what I hear.)

Okay then, since you brought up Flash, let's talk about that. Now, you did say you have permanently disabled Java on your PC, fine then. That means there is no point asking you to check out that Java 3D scene. So, let's go to plan B then,...Flash. I am going to go out on a limb here and assume you still have Flash enabled on your PC, right Penguinboy? Well if you do, your in luck, Flash can also display full, 3D scenes in real time just like it's Java counterpart can.

Here's a good example of what I mean (press and hold left mouse button while dragging the mouse to look around, and use the keyboard arrow keys to move about): http://blog.alternativaplatform.com/ru/files/2008/04/temple.swf

And for a more game map like 3D scene (navigation controls same as above): http://alternativaplatform.com/en/demos/bunker/

No, I have Flash disabled too, except for certain websites.
Gets rid of all those annoying ads.

I use AdBlock Plus (a Firefox addon) to get rid of all ads (since all ads are after all, annoying).
I don't know if there's anything like that for Opera, tho.

Opera has something built-in to do a similar thing.
