Hi, i started making my own textures the other day. In the beginning it went great but then i ran into a problem. When i use my later textures in game they turn black if im standing to far away (like 10 feet away). I have tried to figure it out but came out blank. I use pictures that i paste into wally. I use them on a a standard brush (render mode normal). Maybe i messed of some setting or something.

Does anyone know what im doing wrong?

How big are these pictures? Generally speaking, 256*256 pixels is the maximum recommended size for textures.

Also, what graphic-mode are you running the game in, OpenGL should be used, Software-mode can cause visual glitches(and it looks like crap).

HL1 right?

Make sure that you open 256 color 8bit images only and they are in powers of 2. i.e. 16 32 48 64 96 128 192 256. the X or the Y could be any of those numbers.

Right click and copy then paste into a new wad in wally, you likely did that right.

Maybe you forgot to remip the textures (don't know if that's the proper term - it's been ages since I made a texture), so the lower resolution textures are saved as plain black?

software mode only uses mipmaps and yes you can alter the mips. use OpenGL or Direct3D in Half Life. You can change it under the Video option.

Thanks for all replies. I started saving the pic in 256 colour before pasting it in wally and now it works! The texture looks a bit worse but it will work. My pc don't support Open GL it has got to old graphic card :P

Thanks for your help guys.

Even on my last shittier computer OpenGL ran fine. Maybe this thing is higher-end than I thought.

EDIT: I don't know dick about computers when it comes to stuff like that. I just know how to use 'em.

Jesus Christ. A PC that won't support OpenGL has to be older than Half-Life (pre 1997!?)

How do you get up in the morning!?

I understand him, I had a Pentium2 that I used for 8 years before upgrading to a dual-core. I felt like going from dinosaurs to humans.

Yeah you can get a $200 wal-mart computer and it'll run half life easier than cutting butter with a hot knife.

Yeah i know it sucks! The computer itself is good enough for HL2 but it has some kind of integrated chip instead of a graphic card. I should ad that its my dad's computer and not mine. If i bought one i would make sure it could handle a game that is oven 10 years old :P

The world must be running out of crappy computers, surely. I mean, who'd make a crappy computer these days?

Just go down to you local computer store and buy the cheapest video card you can find that'll fit your computer. I guarantee it'll run OpenGL error free.

There aren't many graphic cards that can run on a 230 W PSU. Im thinking about buying a computer of my own but i want to save money for a good one that can run HL2 well. Im still in school and without job so i run on a quite tight budget :P

PS.
lol Urby :)

Sure there are. I install them in computers all the time. you don't have to get an ATI Geforce Ultra GTXXZZT100006709 GT ULTRA HD Special Edition to play Half-Life with OpenGL. That's why I said, basically just go and find the cheapest card you can find and it'll run HL1 and probably HL2 without a hitch, no big-ass PSU required. As long as you aren't running three hard disk drives and a bajillion expansion cards, you'll be fine.
