Well, its only taken almost 11 years, but it looks like Black Mesa will be the first Half-Life related game to have every single character to have a unique face.

Check this shit out bitches

If they release the dev tools with the mod, I will literally come all over my village.

Does anyone realize how revolutionary this is? This is the kind of thing that would be a major point of interest for a large scale commercial game, and Black Mesa is over here giving this shit away for free. No game to my knowledge has done this before, and it'll surely be "borrowed" by numerous other future games.

This isn't merely the point at which a mod can equal commercial levels of quality, it's the point at which they can surpass that.

I do. But still, I can just imagine seeing a Barney getting shot by his almost-twin brother in the army :P

Regarding the original post: 11 years? What calender are you on? They only started development in 2005 or something.

I think he is referring to when the original Half-Life was released:

There's no legal way they could charge for it unless they moved off the Source engine and used 100% custom resources.

I've seen this a few times on the Black Mesa forums.
I'm hopping that he will get hired by valve after BM is done, so Valve games will use that technology, as it is pretty advanced. The only problem is that they're only using one base head, there should be others for extra realisim.

Black Mesa seems quite impressive indeed. All that's left to see is if it plays as well as it looks.

Or if they purchased a license from Valve.

^ That would be quite possible, although then valve could sue them for copyright infringment.

Yeah, no. It's practically guaranteed to make it onto the Steam servers, though.

There's both, I believe. I know for a fact that there will be HLDM because it's been mentioned many times and there's screenshots of MP maps on the website.

Urby, how did you even find this?
Purely by accident on Friday night. I was browsing the BMS forum and spotted a picture of the HEV suit by Cman2K. I wanted a better look so I checked his site. This was the first thing I saw.

It was really odd because that very afternoon, me and my workmates were talking about how FPS games need to come up with a face generation system to avoid seeing the same character over and over. I'll have to pull this up in the office on Tuesday. Bricks will be shat. XD

Very Ironic.

It's a system that needs to be integrated into all the retail FPS games, though. Have 2 flex sets; one for facial animation, one for indivuallity. Simple, when you think about it.

I also like the scripted sequences they've shown in the trailer.
The tentacle really astounded me, but that also might be because the first time I played through HL was the last time the scientist and the tenticle were in sync. :/
Perhaps it got bugged when I extracted it from the Pak.

Mine got out of sync without being extracted from the pak. After several versions of windows and a new computer, I still haven't seen it synced again. Perhaps it never was, only we were fooled the first time?
Posted 14 years ago2009-08-29 21:08:23 UTC Post #272692
If you watch the trailer where it shows that scene, it's in sync.

sometimes the scientist is in sync, sometimes its lagging behind.

I think the scripted sequences are as buggy for them, as they are for me >_>
Posted 14 years ago2009-08-30 03:23:19 UTC Post #272699
The original tentacle scene (lol hentai :P) worked fine for me a couple of times. Then it was out of sync after a patch. Then it stopped working completely and the scientist just died when the tentacle touched him. Then it worked again, but out of sync.

Then blue shift came out and the HD pack whacked it WAY out of sync.

Steam version of HL and HL:Source both work without any issues.

Black Mesa's looks fine.

I always used a combination of grenades, and quick moving, to get past the tentacles. Here I thought it could see you. That was about 6 playthroughs.

Only recently, while talking about that part of halflife with my girlfriend, did I find out you could sneak around it. Aparently she found out you could sneak past it, first playthrough.

I felt kind of stupid, needless to say.

Nope, gotta use steam HL :P

It probably confused so many people because crouch-sneaking and shift-walking weren't exactly advertised features of the game. They didn't even bother to cover them in the hazard course, for crying out loud. And at the time, the idea of monsters being able to "hear" was probably a little far-fetched.
