Which version of hammer allows you to make an env_sprite a model without crashing hammer? I mean creating an env_sprite and in its sprite name field putting a model.mdl file. I used to do this to make sprited that were illusionary. Does anyone know?

Next time you do that, potatis, it's a ban.

I wrote something, realized it was stupid and replaced the text with a whitespace character. If there was a delete button, I would have used it instead. I haven't done anything wrong.

So... Did you have any idea? I'd use monser_generics but someone said they didn't work in dm. Unless maybe mp_monster allow or whatever. I just can't even find a link to hammer 3.3 to dl it and see if it would work. Or any of the other versions, anyone know where I can find them to try them out?

Edit your post with something like "Edit: removed content" or similar. A delete button can be abused and therefore there is not one.

Sorry to pitch in, but I wonder how do you think it can be abused. Allow it only if it's the last post, and that'll help with accidental double posts too. Maybe with a time window so you can't delete very old posts.

Even if a post is edited, you still have a placeholder that someone has said something. Helps when people are replying to stuff and discourages people from saying stupid stuff because you can't delete it. Deleted posts disrupt the conversation flow. I agree that it would help for double posts, but they are easy to prevent, and an admin can take care of them anyway. Anyway, back on topic. Put it in a suggestion thread if you really want it.

Deleted posts don't disrupt the conversation flow if they are last. Because the conversation stops there. It's only if there are more posts that it breaks the conversation if you delete them: if you delete your post now, this post I'm writing will not make sense. Had it been the last one, maybe I wouldn't even have read it. And in that case, the conversation couldn't be broken.

But quite often, people post replies to someone only to find that the post they were replying to was edited while they were typing. Deleting would make that worse.

And you end up with situations like the one in this thread. Many other forums (such as PHPBB) display a notice when you submit a post if the post before was edited or deleted, giving you the opportunity to edit your post (or if you changed your mind, you just not submit it).

Thankfully I am not trying to replicate PHPBB. Now do you mind moving this elsewhere? This thread is not the place to discuss it.

No matter how much you hate PHPBB, that's not such a bad idea. Now I shall go to wherever you point me to if I have any future suggestions.

And now, to get back to the topic: I don't know. I have 3.4 and 3.5, and I don't have that problem. Then again, since I have never used custom models and the original models are in the pak file so Hammer can't read them, I never had this problem.

i might have an old version of hammer zeeba i'll look on my old computer when i get home... And as for what you're trying to do, let me get it straight: are you trying to make a model "passable"?

Do the monster_furnitures act that way?

No, I think he's trying to see Hammer display env_sprite models without crashing. For which he needs 3.5.

You should be using cyclers or cycler_sprites for models.
Posted 14 years ago2010-04-22 15:41:32 UTC Post #280709
Yea im just trying to make them passible. Cyclers don't do that. I'll try the monster_furniture real quck. Yea in old versions of hammer I could make an env_sprite and in its sprite field put a model.mdl file but now in hammer 3.4 it crashes. Prolly because of 3d viewable sprites in hammer...

Edit, yea the monster furniture doesn't work in dm.

You could remove the models from your models folder, assuming you have them in the pak file the game should run fine.

Or you could edit the fgd so Hammer doesn't try to display the models.

Don't think that would work.

Uhm... sprites and models show up fine in mine. I have version 3.5.

when you type "sprites/glow1.spr" it won't show up in hammer.
if you type "c:/sierra/halflife/valve/sprites/glow1.spr" it does show up but the map won't find the sprite when its run.

if you copy your models and sprites folders in your hammer folder they'll show up without having to deal with the directory issue.

so when hammer looks for "sprites/glow1.spr" it'll actually find it in the hammer folder, and the map will also run without error.

Just tested, and cycler_sprite works for me using hammer 3.5. I took the 3dm_fastcar.mdl from 3d-mike's cs_bikini and it worked fine (i could walk through the car). the only thing i had to do was copy the model to my valve/models dir, and manually type in the filename:

models/cs_bikini/3dm_fastcar.mdl

Because cycler_sprite for me, will only allow you to choose *.spr filenames fsr...
