Half-Life 2: GoldSrc is a total-conversion mod which aims to recreate Half-Life 2 within the boundaries of the GoldSource engine. The vision of the mod is to create Half-Life 2 as we imagine Valve would have done it, had they made it at the time they made Half-Life 1; that means the same resources, limitations and so on. The mod will feature the same graphical style as Half-Life 1.

We are currently looking for:

Mod Construction Planner
  • Very familiar with the GoldSrc engine
  • Knows how to create mods from scratch, using the GoldSrc engine
  • Created mod(s) before is a plus
Level Designers
  • Familiar with the GoldSrc engine
  • Able to create levels using Valve's tools for the GoldSrc engine
  • Able to apply textures generated by our texture artists
  • Capable of conforming to standards
  • Able to create optimized levels
  • Able to use entities created by our programmers
Weapon / NPC Programmers
  • Familiar with the GoldSrc engine
  • Knows how to create entities
  • Experienced in AI programming
Mod Programmers
  • Very familiar with the GoldSrc engine
  • Knows how to create entities
  • Experienced in engine programming
  • Capable of modifying game-code
  • May be required to implement a rough physics engine
3D Modelers
  • Familiar with the GoldSrc engine
  • Able to apply textures generated by our texture artists
  • Able to create models usable in the GoldSrc engine
  • Able to rig and or animate is a plus
Texture Artists
  • Familiar with the GoldSrc engine
  • Able to create textures usable for models and or levels
  • Capable of accepting that we are looking for low-res HL1-style textures
  • Can reproduce textures by eye
Concept Artists
  • Familiar with the GoldSrc engine
  • Fan of Half-Life
  • Can go through Half-Life 2 levels and create "dumbed down" designs based on them
Even if your area of expertise isn't listed here, please still apply; we are always looking for qualified talent.

Been tried before and failed horribly.
Why?
Because it's such an utterly pointless undertaking.

Seriously, there is literally no merit in doing this whatsoever. Come up with something original.

A project like this isn't possible because others failed miserably. It is very possible, and whoever created that "recruitment sheet" has at least good knowledge about working in a team.
The only problem is the support- everybody shouts negative comments.

But I bet that if a project like this would release a few maps demo, everyone would try it.

I was wondering when this would turn up here. It started on the Black Mesa forums I believe.

Honestly, I see no point in this whatsoever.

Black Mesa is a recreation of HL1 in the Source engine. This means you can play through the original story in more detailed environments, with new and improved effects and physics.

HL2: Goldsource aims to recreate the second game on a comparatively primitive engine, which cannot handle half of the effects required to portray the story properly. The character simulation that made the characters so great to interact with will be gone. The physics system is mandatory. Even if you code one in, it needs to be stable enough to function with the gravity gun. Hell, you keep adding in additional code to get things to work properly you're just going to end up with the Source engine.

I'm sorry, but as fun and quirky as the idea seems, there is absolutely no fucking point. That may be negativity, but it's a fact.

edit: Also, a link would be helpful, but nevermind eh.

It's like creating Crysis on the Pacman engine.

And Moab, have you not seen Surface Tension? Of course GoldSrc can handle outdoor levels, it's all just an issue of scaling.

Half-Life 2's outdoor levels are X times the size of Half-Life 1's outdoor levels, and even if you scale it down, it just would'nt look right.

Consider this: most of the Route Canal chapter wouldn't even be possible because the levels are too big to fit within the map boundaries of a Goldsrc map. I mean, the map literally won't fit on the grid in Hammer.

And how will you do highway 17 and the Airboat chapters? If you managed to code in vehicles and then tried to make the level any real length at all you'd end up having to load the next map every thirty seconds. It's just not feasible.

Which means no physics, no extremely large maps, just basically a sequel made at least 2-3 years after the first, thus limitations.

But the problem, how would you know exactly how they would have made hl2 before 2002-3?

This is all very vague.

Use your gray matter. Because they went from GoldSrc to Source.
What you're thinking of doing is going from Source to GoldSrc.

Can you add 1 and 1 together and come up with 2?

The levels will have to be split so terribly.

How about this;

This is more of a demake than a remake. And demakes suck. Trying to say that this is similar to Black Mesa is incorrect, as instead of doing all your own media (models, voice, textures, etc), all you'll do is use conversion tools. Not only do they give bad results, it's entirely illegal.

And yes, there is a team.

Don't know if that's better or worse. It's just so extremely pointless - you say you're going to recreate an entire, (relatively) modern game, from scratch, in an engine that is 12 years old. Not only do I expect you not to have the funding and/or interest to achieve such a thing, I also expect that your target audience is near zero.

And what, I ask, is the overall reasoning behind such a mod? Everybody who is interested has already played HL2. You will not impress any possible employers in the industry. You are taking a new game, coating it in rust, and trying to pass it off as something good. It is, in my opinion, an insult to Half-Life 2, the developers, and the modding community in general.

Projects like this leave a bad taste in my mouth.

But if the mod does finish(even if only a few maps are released), a good part of half-life mappers and nostalgics WILL SURELY play this.

Agrees with rimrook: the best you could ever hope to achieve from this project imo would as a goof or a stunt... It's one thing if you already did this and were showing it off, you'd probably get some positive reception, but to try recruiting for such a thing is just ridiculous.

So far, as many times as projects like these have popped up, I've yet to see a legitimate, GOOD, set of screenshots of some levels.

According to your page, you have 3 level designers and 4 texture artists. If you guys were REALLY into this, you'd have a shit ton of work going on already.

crollo, Half-Life's logo was lambda surrounded by a plain circle, not touching it. Half-Life Source's logo had the point at the top right, with an S inside it. I'm not too keen on your logo, red seems like a strange choice, and your lambda is clearly a very different font to that which Valve uses.

And why are you trying to contribute after all the sh*t-posting and negativity you've expressed so far?
Posted 13 years ago2010-06-21 03:12:13 UTC Post #282192
Calm down, i have not posted a single negative thing about your mod so far, other then one off topic post about darkies avatar.

As for the logo, i chose red because it was originally orange, but turned red due to the fact that the layer blend mode was set to 'multiply', and the lambda font?
I figured you might as well make something unique to your mod.

Be thankful i contributed at all, as nobody else will be willing to considering the extreme negativity to the idea alone.
