Well, yeah, that. Tell us how did you come up with your username.

In my case, it all started back when the internet was still a new thing and I had to create my very first email account. My name was taken so I tried to come up with something else that could (at least vaguely) be associated with me. I like The Simpsons, disco music, and my hair was longer at the time, so I didn't have to think much.

Now share your stories!

My name is Joe.

I was an Obama supporter (before the election sworn into office)

Therefore, Joe + Obama = Joebama

sounded cool too, so even after i started losing respect for our president i still liked the name

I had been using the password "potatis" (Swedish for potato(es)) for a couple of years and all my friends knew that (they used to borrow my Youtube account since they were to lazy to sign up themselves). One of my friends had been using the unoriginal MSN nickname "Fallen Angel" for a few months when he decided to make a new Hotmail account because he kept getting spam email. He created fallen_invalido@hotmail.com ("invalido" is slang for disabled person). I also needed a new email address and I decided to put my well-known password and my friend's email address together to create potatis_invalido@hotmail.com (this was when Hotmail was still popular for some reason). Unfortunately (or fortunately, I can't decide which I like best), TWHL doesn't allow more than 15 characters in nicknames, so the "o" was cut off.

I'd like to hear saw1833's story.

Worldcraft Dude: My first TWHL username from way back in late 2003.I picked the first relevant name I could think of. I was fmapping on Worldcraft at the time, I had never been a member of an internet community, and I really just planned on lurking TWHL, so I really didn't care about having a clever name. This is why, to this day, you still might catch TWHLers calling me "WCD".

World Crafter: My second TWHL username, created with my first username in mind. I switched to this one to take on a more "longstanding member" persona. The idea was to convey a creative thinker and a Half Life mapper in one name. It was also influenced by my prior name.
This is still my username for anywhere that I've registered where I haven't been able to change my name.

Soup Miner: My third TWHL username, and likely my last. I used this name for a long time online before deciding to ask a TWHL mod to change my name. Honest to god, I picked these two words because of how much I like seeing the word "soup" in people's names and because of an old VG Cats comic that mentioned "mining for fish". I switch on and off with other names on Steam, but Soup Miner is most definitely "me" in the long run and I always come back to it :P

Coolfat3459: We're not even going there, just know that it was a name I used.

Edit: @Potatis
So... you went from being a disabled potato to an invalid potato because of a character limit :)

Mine is my old counterstrike/ halflife deathmatch name. I always had random names. I admired unique interesting names so one day I sat and thought for a long time and came up with zeeba~G. I fell in love with it and used it for years and years. It is spelled with a tilda but it would sometimes close my console before changing my name so I changed it to a -.

Every once in a while i'll change my name to Thias, Mighty Thias, crashman because they sound really hard core and crashman was a really tricky boss from megaman 2 that hops around and throws sticky grenades at you. I would use Thias when i'm owning and crashman when I was really fast.

I also always change my name to stuff like the worst thing you could possibly imagine like "old saggy grandma flap jacks".

Hm, I've had two names on twhl, might as well explain them both.

I was called Ghetto before because I was like 12 and I taught it was cool... Plus I was born and raised in a Ghetto till I moved to England.

As for Skals, I was trying to come up with something more original and catchier than Ghetto, and at the time all of my friends had funny names, so I decided to be called "Skals", which in my language basically means something like a tiny peace of wood chopped off a trunk of wood. Like the kind you use to start lighting a fire. Pretty original eh?

Mad and Cow were like the first two words I learned in english.
There isn't much more to it. I thought it sounded funny when I was around 7.
And when it turned into the name of a disease a few years ago I found it even more funny

Counter strike source.
When I first really ventured onto the internet ( I was young ) I'd just put any old name in , for example here , "mr.good map". When I got steam for the first time for HL2 , I first used the name "Kenco Koffee". One game of Counter Strike Source fixed that.
It was some random server with the weapons already spawned , and the game would come up with "humiliating" kill notifications.
The one that I got almost all the time was "Kenco Koffee got turned into a pile of jell-o". I thought "Hey , let's use Instant Mix , then it'll sound funny".
I quickly changed it so it said "Instant Mix got turned into a pile of jell-o" which gave a few chuckles. Happy with the name , I've left it as that since.

I guess my TWHL nickname has to be the most unoriginal from here. Back in 2007 when I registered I was really playing a lot of Counter-Strike(almost being a "pro"). Hey, I was 13 at the time... I guess I thought about playing counter-strike with lighting bolts.
Actually my nickname is "Samurai Jack", which is again unoriginal. I chose this one right after I connected for the first time to the internet(spring 2007, although I used the internet from about 2004). Why? Well, probably because I like that Cartoon Network character when I was young. Yes, I'm not a Samurai and I will never commit harakiri as well ^^.

For about a year now I'm still trying to figure out a good, original nickname to last at least 10 years from now. I can't find one....

Even though I frequently register on forums\sites with "Samurai Jack", I also invented other nicknames, unoriginal as well :(. For example, my youtube account is "reactor1system" and now if I think of it... well, I'm asking myself wtf did I mean with "reactor1system" back in 2007 ?!
My flickr account is "carstic_productions", but that's a more separate domain-photography(I leave in a karst area).

Oh skals, I always thought "skals" means something like "skulls" or something like that xD.

I'll be honest here. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
I wanted to be a modder (Before I joined up here, I had only been on a couple of modding wikis, and that was the full extent of my internet knowledge besides crappy game websites for kids) and my name is Jeff. I basically chose this because a friend said my other choice (A character from a Star Wars novel) was a stupid idea. JeffMOD also seemed unique, like no one else would use it. (Which, again, turned out to be wrong.)

My name is Jeff. I like to 'MOD'. For better or for worse, I'm stuck that way.

If anyone has seen AKIRA they would know where Tetsuo comes from.
But it's SO much more than that.
In high-school my clique of friends were all into the Japanese culture, naturally we all had chosen Janaese Aliases. In seeing and loving the movie Akira, i chose Tetsuo as my first name and Sho as my last name.
Sho is roughly translated to "child of light", but i never got a meaning for Tetsuo. Still it stuck. so i go by Tetsuo on most sites, and if it's taken, I'll go by Tetsuo Sho.

I still love the Japanese culture, well the older Japanese culture... not so much ninjas and samauri's but just the whole... Honor and Respect thing. It's great.

Most people think I named myself Unbreakable because my favorite movie is Unbreakable, but actually I made my name then months after I heard about the movie unbreakable, and was like dude thats my username, so I watched it and was very impressed.

Why did I choose the name? Because I've been through so much shit in my life, and not once did I have any suicidal thoughts at all, why? Because something wants me dead, but a higher power wants me alive, for what reason? I have no idea yet, but that thought wants me to survive,

Hense the name 'Unbreakable',

wow, I think I just made a quote up!

I can't even quite remember why I chose this name. FresheD is a shortened version of the nickname I always used while gaming, Freshy Fresh, which I only ever used on TWHL. Freshy Fresh had a nice smooth ring to it. I probably was influenced by the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but like I said i'm not quite sure anymore. :)

Ok so a few years ago I had been really into Metroid games. I had recently played Metroid Fusion in which the main enemy was something called the "X" I liked the name and took it calling myself "Super-X" This name went though several variations such as Ultra-X and Omega-X. So that's the "X" but what about the "LAyer2"? Well my friend was playing Metal of Honor: Front-lines and in the multiplayer everyone started out with the name Player-1(2,3,4) he made a typo and his name ended up being 7layer-1. So I took the layer-1 moved the "-" and capitalized the "L" so it looked like this "X-Layer2". Then I made a typo of my own by holding down shift after capitalizing the "L" and there you go "X-LAyer2".

Well, I've had the nickname Hotdog since I was young, given to me by my Dad and myself because I liked...those things, umm, bread with the sausages in them, and sauce. Hah. Anyway, it kinda stuck as my favorite of nicknames as i have a few, like Tomato, HT, mostly something to do with my name.

When I started going online, it was pretty obvious that hundreds of people would be using the nickname Hotdog, so I modified it with 'hlife_' because it was my favorite game at the time (still is) and much to my surprise, I actually liked it and it stuck. Not only that, but NOBODY has anything even close to it, so my username has been ingrained in the internet as all mine! i may even copyright it, haha

Up until I started college (coincidentally the same year I joined TWHL) I only used to get to play Half-Life on-line due to us having a dial-up connection and my Dad's work PC being the only one hooked up to it. However we also had a LAN set up so my brother-in-law and I used that a lot.

I had dozens of names during that period, a few I can remember are:
Andyrew
Poo
Bloodbath
Blood_Baron
Psycho_Mantis
Monkeytoy
Monkeys_Todger

Well, when I started college I needed to create a unique email address. I came up with Urbanebula (pr. Urb-ah-nebb-you-lah) as it was a mix of Urban and Nebula, (City Clouds / Smoke)

Then I started playing Unreal Tournament a lot more and started joining communities so I kept using it because it was always available.

I go by Urby most of the time now because it is shorter and that's what everyone calls me. It's just simpler.

Simple. I used to go on Habbo Hotel back when it was popular (Just like pokemon cards).

I think it was my first time thinking up a name to use on the Internet so my mother suggested Habboy and my inner rapper / chav said add an I.

I don't actually like the name but it has become my trademark since I now own a website under the name which got me noticed by a firm who invited me to review games. fffffffffff okay

Some of you may know me as IEMC, standing for I eat monkey chow. I was 13 when I joined the site. I liked Toy Story. In the movie there's a line where Misses Potato Head goes something like "and don't forget the monkey chow."

I can't be bothered to finish the quote, but yah. I decided I liked monkey chow as well. And at that time I was kinda obsessed win monkeys.

People called me IEMC to shorten my terrible name. Then that stuck for a few years.

Then about 2 or 3 yeas ago I had it changed to Luke. Because that's my name.

Kraken is a large mythical sea-monster squid like creature. I'm unaware of its origin. It was featured in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, which I haven't seen.

I came across this name playing the game earthbound, as it appears as a boss battle in the game.
