Stealing is bad, Mkay?
And of what could you accuse me if I'd use WebReaper to have a TWHL backup on my harddrive? Since we don't know if the WayBack machine will archive everything on this site :P.

So what other games were you thinking of supporting? All valve games or broader?

I like the idea, I had no idea you guys had restricted access though, how did you redo the entire site?

Edit: if the site could go down at anytime, why not start a dev blog for the new site, mainly just so people don't get left in dark.

Broader. Whatever anyone can bring, we'll put up. So rather than just say "we're concentrating on these new engines", it'll generally be most engines that offer a proper level editor.

Broader. I'd love for people to start posting UDK work on the updated site.

I say the more the merrier, you know? Why should the site be pigeon holed to one single thing or one engine. Like you said, if it has an editor then maybe you should try and include it. Everyone can benefit from some sound advice sometimes even if they are different engines. Level editing is pretty much the same no matter how you cut it; even the 2D stuff.

Don't laugh, RPG Maker is the bomb! Gotta love the Japanese!

I would love for the new site to have some sort of resource area. I know we push for originality but it wouldn't hurt. I know everyone is against prefabs too but they give a great base for someone to at least learn how to make complex brushwork. Just an area for some basic resources and links.

Maybe the resources could be cross platformed so they could be used by all. Like leaving texture images to their original source instead of rendering it to a specific engine. That way you still have to work for it.

And definitely more tutorials for all engines included.

Instances are like prefabs in L4D2 mapping, a wealth of instances makes mapping damn enjoyable. I spend a lot of time making them myself so a place to upload them would be awesome.

And please, no Twitter...

I've been in this community since I was even too young to realize how to even map (5+ years).

I honestly think moving to a new domain under the management of you three, with this kind of community would really help and expand it.

I've always used TWHL has my mapping reference, and I'll do anything to help out. If it weren't for this community I would never have learned how to map. I believe it's the same for many others. I've taught 3 others how to map, and they've all learned through TWHL's tutorials and forums.

Long live TWHL.

Definitely. A lot of older engines still have a fanbase. 2D work would be awesome, too.

Agreed. I've been using them a lot lately, they're just so damn handy.

So do I, something along these lines would be nice. Ideally though, I would love to keep the name, but it's not going to make a lot of sense calling ourselves TWHL after expanding the site.

Just brainstorming here, but what if we use the TWHL name as a legacy for the Half-Life sections of the site (forums, tutorials, vaults etc)?

I personally feel WorldCrafters or Mapvault would be far too narrow as even now this community isn't just about mapping, it's more broadly about modding in general with several different subsections. [Mapping, coding, modelling, etc]

Yes it is, it's implying the creation of a world in which is populated by other non focused things, therefore mapping.

Think of it as dream building in inception, you're making a dream world for the user, but building a dream is just making a world populated with items [and bringing the user into the dream], you're not making the items, therefore it's narrow.

I can almost picture a sign like this like on The Simpsons.
WorldCrafters
the new TWHL
In all honesty, I think WorldCrafters was a pretty good suggestion despite what some may say. It implies some form of modding or at least mapping (modding indirectly), and subtly hints of its Half Life roots without being too explicit or narrow. I vote for that.

Let's settle on a list then set up a poll for it under the shoutbox :)

Also, on the technical side, perhaps a phpBB base could be easily adapted to fit our current and possibly future needs and include the map vault, user profiles, even journals with minimal effort (it's modular and it's already written). Plus it would handle bbcode correctly across all the site unlike the current odd ad-hoc contraption (not meaning to offend Penguinboy, but this IS an odd ad-hoc contraption). Of course, it's just an idea. I offer my assistance as a code monkey regardless of the platform used :)
Posted 13 years ago2011-02-05 03:57:13 UTC Post #290078
Stu: The current site was written when I had only a small amount of HTML/CSS/SQL/PHP knowledge. I am far more experienced at all of those now, and I can do far better than trying to shove desired functionality into the bloated and unwanted codebase of phpBB. It's good for a single-use forum website with no modifications, but since I need high customisability, I can make a far better website without it. I'd be using my own MVC framework for any new iterations of the site.
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
Posted 13 years ago2011-02-05 04:00:48 UTC Post #290079
It was just an idea. Of course it's not even near enough as it is, but I think it would be easily adaptable (that doesn't mean modifications can't be extensive - they should). But if you have a better plan already, go with it.
Posted 13 years ago2011-02-05 04:10:08 UTC Post #290080
It is a good name yes, but I just feel the meaning behind the title of a website could reflect it's content far more accurately then that.

[EDIT] That name is already taken, damn.

i quite like worldcafter(s), yet the prefix "world" seems possibly a bit pretentious to me.

Maybe kick it down a couple notches?

levelcrafters
mapcrafters
gamecrafters
modcrafters
intermissioninthethirddimensioncrafters

alternatively:

mapmakers
gamemakers
modmakers
candlestickmakers

@skals: i agree about a domain extension not being crucial, though it does add instant credibility to the site, and i guess that can't be ignored..

@Capt. Terror. I don't find it that terrible. I feel it would be worse if it were a suffix - i.e CraftersWorld. That sounds a bit like Wayne's World or that sort of thing and it's too informal for my likes :P

modvault and worldvault are both available in everything except .com

Also: I think this is a cool idea though. I would love to get into the UDK but I'm happily settled with the TWHL community and don't fancy getting involved with another.

It would be nice to have a place for people to put their skins and models too.

Oooh, and a big reviews section.
