The Sony Playstation Network has been offline for about a week now. I'm posting a new thread because there's been an important development which warrants its own thread:

All your information including "name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID" have been stolen, as well as, possibly, "profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers".

Finally, "(...) we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained"

Basically, there's a catastrophic security crisis going on with the PS3's Playstation Network, which has compromised data for 77 million user accounts. There is still no ETA for resumption of PSN services. All of the quoted text comes directly from Sony, btw, so you can be sure this isn't just some third party speculating on the issue.

A catastrofical ending might mean a beautiful restart. I'm pretty neutral to this situation as I anyway consider gaming consoles a waste of money.

Gotta say I was planning to get one after I get rid of my crappy 360, but I think I'll give it a miss now.

For the most-part, I totally agree. I sincerely wish I hadn't got my 360. It's just a really weak PC with poor controls and less functionality.
PS3 is the only one I see a point in because it has a good library of games not available on a better platform (read: PC).

Thanks.

I'm one of the people hit by this, but I'm not particularly worried. Already changed my passwords, and if I have to, I'll order a new card (though this data was encrypted, and they never got the security codes).

The rest of the info they got is pretty easily obtainable over the internet these days, especially with social network sites. I'll just have to keep an eye out for phishing, not too hard. Banks are pretty good when it comes to reversing fraudulent activity.

Sony will cop it hard for this, it was a nasty blunder, but I can't wait for the hacker(s) to cop it worse. Whatever faith I had in Sony or the Playstation isn't really shaken, just inconvenienced at this point.
Gotta say I was planning to get one after I get rid of my crappy 360, but I think I'll give it a miss now.
Sony's security and information policies are only going to improve after this. Don't see any reason in missing out on some quality games.

"OMG PC IS SO GREAT AND BETTER THEN ANYTHING ELSE!!!! But i'll get a console just so i can sey it suks lol"

Just wondering.

Also, enough of this small business shit, how about you have a go at a government website already? No really, you're so great and 1337 at hacking, have a boo, it'd be good for you.

Also, Skals, Huntey, Crollo, etc.: Nobody wants to hear you guys bitch about what your favourite console is.

I don't give a damn about consoles, I'm just wondering why somebody who obviously has something as a standard and refuses to accept anything below it, would actually get something below their standards. Where is the logic? You know it's going to be 'crap' to you.
I just included the words "PC" and 'console' because it would be easier to understand, remove them and you get the same explanation.

And it is a very small business compared to the much larger databases you could attack instead, and you would get far more useful information then some 13 year old kiddie with 20$ in his bank account supplied by his poor mom. Quality > quantity.

77 million accounts. The average gamer is in his/her mid 30's. The average age of game purchasers is 40. This is big business, don't be a fool.

Yes, I did word that pretty poorly, but my point is this is a gaming network, I would truly love to see how well they'd fair against something like a bank or gov site.

It is indeed big business [PSN], but I wasn't saying it wasn't, I was saying IN COMPARISON to something like a bank or a GOVT.
I can't come up with any friendly statistics, But I'm relatively sure you'd have a lot more accounts then you would on PSN, and there would sure as hell be a lot more profitable amounts you'd get than you would on PSN.

I love that too. It would be awesome to remain like that forever. Except I wanted a driver's licence, so goodbye anonymity.

If I ever have a family, my wife will have to give birth at home, and I won't register my children. Then they will be able to fully enjoy that gift of anonymity as they grow up!

Crollo, Huntey gave his reason as to why we wanted a PS3 even though he prefers PCs (because a lot of exclusive games are on it). And he regrets his choice to buy a 360, which probably means he didn't think they were that bad until he got one (I.E. he made a mistake). I'm not sure exactly where his "lack of logic" is.

Regardless of just how bad it could have been, it wouldn't have met his standards, and that is the flawed logic.

I'm so uptight about my food, that I refuse to eat anything below 300$ [Insert food representation here], and one day, I decided to try eating a piece of toast. It tasted terrible, I didn't realize just how bad it was until I tried it. Why did I try it? Well, because I knew it wouldn't taste as good as my usual meal!

I'm a very private guy myself, but staying away from online banking? Seems a bit paranoid.

Seeing some of the reactions from this around the web makes me wonder what people actually know about the services they subscribe to. People have their details stored online for so many these days, it's a massive part of how we live. Bank accounts, home loans/personal loans, automatic bill payments, eBay, Amazon, iTunes, Steam, or any other online stores... and any one of those could be compromised by hackers, if they were determined enough, or from one employee mistake.

Sony messed up, sure. They were slow and their security wasn't exactly up to snuff, but the same thing could definitely happen to others. Encryption can be cracked. Living in fear of identity theft or fraud isn't something I want to do, it's a threat you face just from using these services.

Just keep a close eye on your shit, and report anything suspicious. Shit just happens sometimes.

If this is real, than I don't understand how you can't afford a decent camera.
If it's not, then that's a comparison that gives me a headache. I like toast!

Appreciate you explaining that, Scotch (even if you did steal my name). ;)
And it's not even that the 360 is "bad", it's just utterly pointless to a PC gamer because it has literally no selling points which outclass the PC.

And Striker, he doesn't spend $300 on meals, he was using an exaggerated example to try to make his point because he thinks we don't get it when we do. We just think your opinion is worth shit and that pretty much everything you say is wrong/retarded/trolling, Crollo.

The selling point for every console is the games. To argue hardware is completely pointless when the games are what actually differentiates between platforms. If a platform has lots of exclusive games that you want, then it is obviously a desirable purchase. Some example games to inspire you:

The PS3 has games such as Uncharted, Infamous, God of War, Gran Turismo, and Heavy Rain.

The 360 has titles like Gears of War, Shadow Complex, Limbo, Geometry Wars, and Alan Wake.

Combined, the 360 and PS3 also offer games like Final Fantasy XIII, Castle Crashers, and Enslaved.

The Wii has all the big Nintendo titles, as well as....all the small Nintendo titles, and, uh... Well, anyway. Nintendo.

The PC offers better FPS controls as well as pretty much every RTS game ever. You also get a lot of indie games such as Minecraft.

The DS has Ace Attorney, Hotel Dusk, Advance Wars, Zelda, Trauma Center, Mario & Luigi, and Professor Layton.

The PSP? It's got nothing.

The fact that Sony didn't announce this to the world as soon as it happened is a black mark on their name. I'm sure if card details were at risk they would have made everyone aware the moment they realised.

As for name, address and contact details, I generally could give less of a shit.

If I don't know the number I don't answer the phone. If I open the door to a salesman, I close it again. Simple.
