ok since i am totally noob in source engine i havent mapped so hard adding tons of brushes and stuff but mapping that roof took me some hours (btw. i will map more when my turn will come, feel free to edit the roof !:O )

well i have experienced a problem, why the letter models didnt show up in game??

Ok ninja i played your version of the map and i LOVE the improvements, but you are WAY late. I understand the site was down, but guys, if anything you should always be upping your map early, since i hope nobody is using the whole 24 hours to work on the map ;)

Everyone: i will ask everyone to make uploading your map on-time or early TOP PRIORITY. You might screw someone's opportunity to work on the map if you are late, and there is really no pressure in this; Add as little or as much content as you want. If you have a conflict i can always reschedlue you ;)

A couple things:
  • If you models don't show up in the game, try making them a cycler instead of a prop_static (this is what i do though i think you are supposed to make them a prop_physics, because they are probably a dynamic prop)
  • If you notice, archie appended his version of the map "002" so we can keep track of the different versions. I like this idea and i think we should do it, so i will update the rules. (urby, you will actually be version 004, and ninjas would have been 003)
  • good work including the required stuff as per rules. Also, i am now making packbsp optional but i will ask again if anyone uses custom content to make sure you include it in your upload.

Ah, I appended mine to 03 as it was 02 that came to me. I'll save as 04 next time.

Also, I fixed the lettering props for you Ninja. :)

I've never truly mapped Source and I've spend a few hours on this already so I'll be uploading my version soon anyway. I haven't used any custom content myself so PackBSP (whatever that means) shouldn't be necessary (I think...)

EDIT I'm also getting really pissed off with the Source SDK. I don't know if it just needs re-downloading or what but Hammer has randomly spazzed out on me twice and it crashes sometimes on compile to the point where it knackers up the entire SDK forcing me to restart my PC...

Yea, i was a bit nazi about packbsp, and it is probably not necessary, so i made it optional in the updated rules ;)

Can't wait to see your goodies Urby! =)

EDIT
If sdk is spazing, or acting strange in ANY WAY, always shutdown sdk and reopen it, as it seems hammer can get corrupted, and certain things like the ignore button and groups stop working.

Also, try verifying game cache of the sdk. Hopefully that will fix it ;)

Lastly, add one more zero to the filename(004) since we will be going over 10 entries, and so they will list in order when sorted by filename, if that makes sense. otherwise for example, i think version 10 would sort after 01 instead of where it should after 09 ;)

Hmmm. Verified the cache and did another compile, normal VIS, normal RAD. It gets to the PortalFlow stage and the process gradually gets slower and slower before grinding to a complete halt...

...wtf.

i'm sure it's fine just let it go. if you "cancel" the compile, make sure to ctrl+shift+esc and cancel vvrad.exe/vvis.exe, because they will keep running until manually killed.

Hotdog is next on queue, so if there is a problem i'm sure he will catch it. I'd offer to look at it now but i'm leavin for work ;(

Just woke up from an extremely long night at the fight and working as cornerman. Didn't get home till 1am and I'm completely buggered and my head is killing me.

Added the tunnel and also added full sequence to the traffic lights. I've got some ideas for later but it depends on how the map progresses. At this rate I think we may all need another pass to finish it off.

OLD POST: Well that was handy, I already had Urby's version downloaded so I could get an idea of what I wanted to do. So I am already set to go.

Then it's Dimbark and then me? Fuck, I don't know how I'll cope with this. I told you Friday was my best free day around these weeks and I've wasted it on nothing.

Hotdog: there are parts of the map missing from urby's edit.. also, there is some sort of issue with the truss model you have at the center of the map.. is there any chance you can re-integrate the missing stuff and reup before tetsu0 starts on the map this evening?

tet also, if you can do me a favor and texture the stuff in the "foreground" of the map that was left by archie with nodraw texture, can u please texture it with something? (i don't care if it's a dev texture or whatev, so you can't see into the void in-game?)

Also, don't worry if you can't think of anything cool or amazing to add to the map.. Remember, you can add as little or as much as you like. Hell, you could just add sound or lights if you wanted, really anything ;)

Also keep in-mind you will get a second shot at this as well. :P

There's no point just texturing them without building upon them. I just stuck them there so people could get an idea of how it might work layout-wise with the accessible buildings. If you're not interested in working on that part of the map then don't waste your time, dude, I'll grab it on my second turn.

Everybody: please mind your work in terms of performance, and try to remember: anything you leave unoptimized has a HUGE cumulative effect on the compile time for the map, which you should all be doing a full compile before uploading.

Example: Ninja defuse, i'm noticing almost all of your work is worldbrushes. Things like stairs and trims and railings should ALWAYS be func_detailed afaik. (archie please correct me if i'm wrong on this)

I'm going through the map now to try and optimize everything best i can, and i'll do a full compile before passing it along to Dimbark.

Yeah, it's just coming up with a good ratio of effectiveness when it comes to func_detailing. Some schools of thought say that every brush not sealing the world should be an entity, but that's just not true. VIS calculations go through the roof with that method, and you have to meticulously nodraw every unseen face by hand.

You're always best simplifying brushwork rather than func_detailing all of it. That was your mistake with the first version, CT. The road and pavement was a total mess, and even though it wasn't causing face splitting, it was still wildly inefficient to both compile and render due to unseen faces being rendered and the fact that the game will render all parts of the map tied to that entity, even if only part of it is actually visible.

Stairs are a bitch for geometry splitting, and I have an example map with the best method for making them, but essentially it's a world-brush ramp with func_detailed steps leading up it. The ramp itself won't cause any face splitting because the brushes around it already get split into tris during the compile.

The biggest problem with the current version is the skybox, though. I don't know who made it, but it's horrendously inefficient, causing VIS to calculate masses of unused space.

Church Arch, i always so enjoy reading your articles... it's like reading stuff on VDC, but with more personality and insight =)

And ya, i'm fixing that skybox right now and func_detailing most of the small stuff in the map before passing it on to dimbark.

Do you think maybe though for the purposes of the project, we should use the "func_detail everything not sealing off the world and not a visblocker" school of thought? Otherwise, i'm just scart the compile times are gonna get really nasty really quick, from us nub abusing worldbrushes ;)

Compiles'll be worse with everything func_detailed than otherwise.
Keep it to smallish structures & especially those with non square or triangular geometry.

I really can't... sorry. Tomorrow I'll be out filming a video project. I might be able to do it Thursday or Friday, but I have to confirm this.

If I won't be able then you'll have to reschedule me for perhaps saturday night-> sunday afternoon. (GMT+3)(but not later! I'm loosing the fun if you'll already be going through the second pass!)

I'll come back tomorrow evening on this thread to see what's happening and to confirm. I don't understand how everything went so fast, my turn was supposed to be Thursday or Friday anyway...
