Morning all,
Boredom setting in now as I wait for my 900k internet to finish updating my steam library before I can play anything. Can't even pull down the latest revisions of The Core and keep working on that... that's how crap my d/l speed is.
Openreach are (apparently) upgrading all the cabs here to fibre... but they seem to have missed mine. according to last years leaked rollout docs, my cab was due to be upgraded to offer FTTP if we paid extra for it. maybe that's the hold up.
Just wondering what the average net speed is amongst us lot (and yes archie, you're going to sway the averages so shh) and if anyone knows of a provider that seems to consistently offer faster connection than most.

You are aware that asking a forum which consists of a whole ton of Americans you're just going to get yourself all depressed when it comes to net connection speeds.
Having said that, there are also the Australian members who we can laugh at to balance things out.
Upload speeds really do suck though. 2 hours or so to upload a ten minute video. Pfft.

28 Kbps. I also get 1 GB of bandwidth a month on a connection that goes anywhere from nothing to 3Mb (Apparently) depending on signal strength, which seems to be influenced (negatively) by how badly I need to use it.

Yeah, we have more Europeans on TWHL than Americans. Also, I'm pretty sure that American Internet speeds are much worse than in Europe.

I'm on 5Mb/s, and I'm also next to one of the largest internet hubs on the planet. It isn't as fast as European internet there, but I honestly don't care for it to be faster. My latencies are awesome, and I usually fire+forget about my downloads so I can "oooh" them in surprise/excitement when they are done.
Also I love how Striker's 20Mb/s internet is slower than 60 of Romania. Damn >_>

Daubster can tell you the details on what we have over here @ Lithuania
11.1 Mb/s constant (thats 100 MB/s or whatever) and thats just the cheapest plan.
But currently im sitting on 3G where there is no 3G coverage so 28kbps give or take

I feel a little better now I know it's only 20Mb.
My mother gets 65mbps at her house... but I'd have to go to my mothers house. Double edged sword methinks.

A friend of mine has the same provider, he called them last week and only said he was going to move over to the competition. Apparently they gave him an upgrade to 5mbps free of charge for a year. FOR A YEAR. BLOODY SCAMMERS.
And to think the other day I was talking to someone from the US, that was complaining about the sucky 10mbps because they get 100mbps symmetrical at MIT.

wow stu i thought mine was slow. you're saying 128 kbps, so that divided by 8 is you kB/s speed(correct?), which would be 16kB/s?
Mine is bad too, but not that bad, i get about 300kB/s(tethering on my 3G android) and i barely get by with that... ='(

That speed they have is not for them, its for the network, and yes, you WILL always use the maximum speed because your RAM memory operates at much bigger speeds than your HDD. It all happens in your RAM not your HDD.

... I understand what you are saying, yet you seem to totally ignore what I'm trying to point to. How can you write files to your HDD with a speed greater than it is capable of? I understand other components can and will operate at those speeds, but an HDD won't! That's the whole point.

There is whats called a cache and a queue, every hard drive has a flash chip for storing stuff that arrives from sata. And until the head is ready to write, information stays in that cache. There is also a queue, so the more files or stuff you got going in, the longer it is, so the slower everything works.
Would putting 2 ssd's in RAID 0 be cheaper then a SAS drive ? (rufee's not sure how much sas'es go for)

Yes, Rufee is right, hard drives, as well as CD/DVD/BR ROMs have cache chips. Newer hybrid hard drives are an HDD SSD combo, the data is on the HDD but it also has a good big SSD speed cache.
RAID can be bad, if one drive dies all your data dies. And SAS drives in servers are also in RAID. Multiple drives, even up to 20 can be in RAID.
One good 15kRPM 1Gb/s 174GB SAS can cost up to 1000$, plus you need the controller.

This is a requirement for places where big speed is needed for data transfer.
And think a bit about the future, just a keyboard and mouse and a screen, the rest is on a server miles away all connected with a 5Gb/s internet connection!
I guess you were just trying to show me how non ethical it is for home usage.

Probably, just as an iMac is a computer in a motor, there will probably be a monitor with Holographic Versatile cards or some new technology (50GB on credit card size), and stuff like that.

My 560 has phase indicator lights that drive me crazy and i dont know how to turn them off.
Well since were on raid topic. I think if you would go for ssd's even in raid 0 they probably will work for 5 years. Im thinking of getting a rig for file storage, 5 hdd's (prices are still shit) in raid 5 to store all my shows and maybe a server to stream them while im on my laptop somewhere with a reasonable connection.

if they bother you that much, a drop of black paint over the light and then another after the first dries should do the trick. repeat as necessary. I used a few little pieces of tape to dull the LED on my speakers because it was annoyingly bright. Now it is still visible but quite soft.

One important thing you seem to have missed is that i was referring to 1Gb per second.
Thats one giga BIT per second.
1Byte = 8Bits
That means that 1Gb = 128MB/s
And modern cheap SATA HDDs have speeds up to 128MB/s
Which means normal home usage HDDs would have easily bared with 1Gb/s speeds.
