Hiya. I'm curious what the best programs for recording HL videos are. I know FRAPS is the best, but I'm looking for something a little more.... free.
I've tried HyperCam 2, Taksi Desktop Video Recorder and a free trial of Camtasia Studio 7 without success. All they record is black screens.

as far as i know HL can record videos by itself.
while you are in console:
record xyz //this records the demo xyz
viewdemo xyz //you can watch your recorded demo xyz in HL
startmovie xyz FF //with this HL saves the frames to your harddisk (FF is the framerate you want, if you don't know what to take, use 30)
endmovie //when you finished saving
then you have many bmp's in your HL folder you can put together to a movie with virtualdub or bmp2avi or videomach...
while you are in console:

The reason you're getting a black screen from the others you've tried is because they don't support Fullscreen recording, which is FRAPS' speciality. If you play the games in windowed mode you can use them.
FRAPs is well worth the money, it's stupidly cheap, but it's possible to get a free 'evaluation' copy from certain disreputable sources. I of course do not recommend you do this.
Seriously though, just buy it. It's futureproof because you get all updates for free and it's cheaper than a meal for two at a restaurant.

By all means, but if you find yourself using it a lot you should really buy it to show support to the devs, especially when it's so cheap. It's not like you have anything better to spend thirty quid on, with the possible exception being dinner for two at a restaurant.

"Acquire" FRAPS if you're broke, or if you have the money, just buy it.
I had a less than legal version for a while but once I found myself in the possession of income, there was no reason to not buy it.
Not to sound like a FRAPS fanboy but the alternatives out there are mediocre at best.
Also it cost me more than FRAPS for a dinner for two at a relatively cheap restaurant. But I guess that's America for you.

I use Bandicam as is, it works fine, but the free version is limited to 10 minutes of solid recording at a time, which if you're not paying attention can mess things up for you when you don't notice it stopping and you miss out a large chunk.
Fraps definitely sounds like a favourite.

Save pirating for ridiculously over priced programs.

bandicam is decent, and doesnt have problems. However there is a lower quality in videos from bandicam than from fraps.

I use "Livestream Procaster" like the name suggests it can stream things live or also just on your hard disk. Then you have dozens of settings to play with. Changing the resolution the color the audio settings etc.
And best of all it's free I believe you can upgrade it to a even better product for money but the free product covers everything you need. You can record games in gaming mode or just your desktop it's up to you.

The mod itself looks absolutely superb, but the trailer could definitely be improved!
Timing with the music could definitely be tightened up - focus your cuts on strong beats in the music. You did it sometimes, but others felt oddly out of place.
The action was also fairly incidental. Lots of taking a few steps then stopping or firing at an unseen enemy then taking cover. All parts of the mod, but not necessarily the most exciting thing to show. More stuff like jumping down onto the pipe that bends under you would be great or better rehearsed runs through the combat so that the visuals are as fast paced as the music.
You show off the locations so well, it's just a bit of a shame you don't show off the action quite as nicely!

there's already several mods featuring HL2 areas in HL1, like Invasion 105 (here on twhl) and SWAT mod alpha. However time's end will have been the first real mod to do it Well. Because invasion 105 is a single-map mod, and swat mod alpha... well, maybe the name itself might tell you something about that mod.

Had a chance to watch the trailer. (With no sound, though, didn't have access to my headphones or a set of speakers at the time) It's looking pretty good. I do have one question, though. The NPC models being used appear to be gearboxes' HD models, are they being distributed with the mod, or are they just the models you have in your Valve folder?

Thank you all for your comments, especially Archie for the detailed analysis. If I ever make another trailer I'll heed your advice (and use a program better than Wax)
I'm torn on which models to use. Part of me wants to remain true to the original HL ones, but another wants TE to look as good as humanly possible. I've been going back and forth between the originals, the HD versions and even the PS2 ones.

There's nothing wrong with using the vanilla models Valve made, but IMO, if you're going HD, you should go all the way, past what gearbox made. Personally, I find Ambient.Impact's website has some of the best HL NPC models available, by himself and Romka. They surpass gearbox's efforts in quality by far. Of course, it's your mod, your tastes.
Really looking forward to the final product, LE was a classic, and this promises to be one too!

Those models look supurb. I don't suppose anyone knows of any Hi-def HL1 versions of HL2's Combine soldiers or citizens? Original creations, not conversions of the HL2 models themselves.

I think reissues had some, and I'm fairly sure the citizens at least weren't ported. I seem to recall they had the face and hair of Gearbox's HD dead barneys from BS.
Not sure where else you could download them or if the author allowed those to be used by other people, though.
