I remember the day when a desktop wallpaper caused a severe performance hit. It hasn't been like that for some 15 years...

@DiscoSto: Ahhh yeah. I recall having .bmp for higher quality 'till a bunch of friends came over to my place. A couple of weeks after and I was still getting shite for not using jpegs...
The black screen above is a 16x16 low res stretched jpeg, old habits die hard :P

Your efforts are useless if you don't go to MyComputer>Properties>Advances settings>Performance, tick all of those off. Then switch to the classic windows theme.

Now you have performance oriented machine.
But seriously, even if you're running a core2duo, which is ancient at this point, the performance boost is unnoticeable.

I don't know what to do about winamp either, as I'm really used to it. I just performed a fresh install of the OS, and now everytime I listen to a stream on winamp after 5 minutes or so it crashes and the audio gets borked(I hear a constant piece of music repeated, and there's no way to get rid of it unless you restart windows, not even restarting the windows audio service from services). It says something about "BEX" error code, with a dll related to MIcrosoft C++ redistributable 2005.
These redistributables are the biggest piece of shit in computing, because they're so fragmented.
I installed foobar, but it's... spartanic.

@Striker: Running an i7 with sli-ed gtx 770s, 90% of time underclocked - except when i'm compiling. Not really worried about performance.
I'm trying to keep my UI as classic as possible...cause nostalgia, i guess.
Wish Windows 8 would have a classic windows theme, but alas. Classic Shell should do for now... Dang your cellphones to heck! :(
Posted 9 years ago2014-07-17 09:29:41 UTC Post #320393
@Striker: With a bit of customisation you can make foobar2000 look quite nice. For example, here's what mine looks like: http://i.imgur.com/Y9ZfliR.png
I don't know how well it handles streams, though.

Btw, watch out for Winamp. I believe they were under AOL 'till recently when someone else bought it and messed up Shoutcast and what not. Update to the latest version, if you haven't already.

The only alternative iv'e found to WinAmp is AIMP, but i understand why you wouldn't want to use it.

Speaking of battery life; My Nokia 5310 X-press music is awesome... I shit you not, once a month I charge it. I hardly use it, but for calls from mom or dad like... 18-20 times a month, it still lasts bloody long. Compared to my iPod touch 4, which now dies in a day...

It's stunning to think that the scene in your wallpaper is on about the same latitude as warm Iberia and Sicily, yet it looks so much like cold northern Sweden.
Interesting wallpaper.

Is it digitally painted?
Yes. I highly recommend having a look at the artist's website. He has lots of paintings featuring alternate versions of the Swedish and American 80s and 90s. They often have a sci-fi or fantasy theme, but despite this they often feel very real and nostalgic.

It's not really wasteful... you're not disadvantaging people with smaller screens by not using it all. Even if it were, is having an attractive background image not an equally viable use for said space?

Furthermore, you have installers on there, which I know you're not even going to use again for the foreseeable future.

In a nutshell, that desktop is a fucking disaster. :zomg:

@James Luke
Well, my desktop's purpose is primarily decorative. What you see is not what I actually use to do stuff.

For example: if I want to go to some files and folders, I just press Windows+E to open Windows Explorer. If I want to launch a game, or a tool quickly, I go to the "Games" or "Tools" pop-up folders in my taskbar and I find whatever I need, because it's all nicely organised. :3

Exceptions, however, are: my work folders on the desktop.
Half-Life, Half-Life 2 etc. are my work folders where I put my stuff related to those games (compiled .bsp files, textures, models, tutorials etc.). But they're so easy to access, no additional "digging" is needed.

If you want, I'll record a video of doing everyday stuff on it, so you'll exactly know how I can live with that.

Man you're in London too! I've got to schedule a visit there at some point to have a beer with you and Skals :D.

The situation is similar with me too. I've been using a laptop for the past 4 years where I stay now, having a dual-monitor PC at work. My computer is at home, though it's getting very old at this point (the last game I played on it was The Talos Principle and was at the limit of playability with 20-30 FPS).

I've contemplated getting a new PC, but I usually like investing in a top-of-the-line or at least medium-high spec so it retains its value for years to come (like my laptop, which only at this point I'm starting to think it might need replacement). Lately I've studied the possibility of using the computer as a way of passive income, using it for mining. Unfortunately the profit isn't significant when using one card. Buying a Vega64 or GTX1080 for example would pay itself in Ethereum in about a year, at this point at least (but value and difficulty of mining vary so it might be longer or shorter).

If I ever get serious with machine learning, then I might consider such a configuration. It's a bit of a budget killer, an i7/Ryzen7 + GTX1080/Vega64 + 16GBRAM + 500GB SSD + 1TB HDD + the rest of the stuff needed and a dual monitor setup breaks my arse at about ~2500$. I simply can't justify buying such a monster at this point - mainly because - holy shit that's a lot of money - and if I ever get a desktop, my "desktop-replacement" laptop would make no sense and I'd need a 13-15 incher for just getting around, good enough to code and stuff.

Woops, wall of text.

I actually found it by accident, I was typing 'woodcut' into Google images for unrelated reasons.
It appears to be part of a series of works by Brian Nash Gill: http://www.bryannashgill.com/woodcuts/
The original was square so I did add space to bring it to 16:9, and I added a bit of vignette so it wouldn't be quite so eye hurtingly bright at night.
