For whatever reason, I've avoided creating custom textures like the plague. Now I'm facing the prospect of needing to do it. So I thought this would be a good chance to field any tips, tricks and suggestions you might have regarding creating textures! Anything you've got, put it out there.

I'll pop this video I found in the depths of YouTube here to start off.

You can get the line work for your brushes in hammer for painting purposes rather easy.
You can turn on black and white scheme and turn off the grid then print screen the viewport ofnthe side you want to paint. Paste that into photoshop and crop the wireframe line work. Resize to your texture dimensions and start painting. :P

A lot of things in 6D and Riverpool were made this way.

The old Half-Life SDK installer came with a document on texture creation (which might be mirrored or superceded) but it's worth a read.

I have a massive guide on texture creation for GoldSrc, mainly uses PS but also has alternatives and whatnot:

There is a lot of generic youtube tutorials as well such as hand-painted style or realistic style/photomanipulation and other stuff.

Nice.

I think the last 32 colours of a water texture might get illuminated too? Or maybe that's only when not used as water?

Use Gimp its way better than Photoshop

and for creating animating textures that change and move in a direction:

first make the 10 textures where only their details change

than to make it travel in a dirrection:

tile each texture so it is 3x3 bigger but keep the canvas size the same than drag eatch texture up a bit more than the other.

I might be biased because I've been using Photoshop since college, but it is a much nicer and more intuitive program than Gimp in my experience.

Heh so much I did not know about GS textures :)

I'm with Urbs here, been using PS since v7 you would have to pry it out of my cold dead hands before I switch to anything else :D

Having used both, I can say that while GIMP has some useful features (being able to open things as layers and have them be centered without going through Adobe Bridge, being able to paste things and not have them be offset from the image size because there was alpha in the corners, as examples) Photoshop is a lot more user friendly.
Also you can select and move multiple layers at a time, which is a huge timesaver when you're rearranging your stuff either visually or just putting them into groups.

That said if you're getting a copy of photoshop these days, you've missed out on your chance to actually own it, since after they ended support for CS6 they decided to move to a rental model. It's something like $20 a month for the rest of your life, so up to you if that's worth it or you would rather work around the poor UI decisions GIMP's devs made.

Its 10$ per month which is really decent tbh.
I'm not a fan of SaaS myself and if all you are going to do is textures I don't think its worth it, so Gimp is a good alternative to that.

cough cough
Photoshop is a lot more user friendly
I don't even know how to use Photoshop. gimp's user interface is way better: the tool box on the right and the layers windows on the left. and an additional menu bar on top for doing stuff like using a filter to make tillable seamless textures.

filters > map > make seamless.
don't even have to do any work to make professional looking textures. :D

psss and you guys would actually pay for the most widely cracked software of all time?

Holy Sh*t the texture tutorials by The303 are the best iv ever seen.

When you are used to a particular style of interface others seem weird and uncomfortable until you get used to them, maybe its better I just don't know.

As far as piracy goes I would rather pay that amount and get the app plus updates than risk having the crack installing who knows what else :)
