It's that time of year again! It's that time of year again!
Here's my traditional E3 thread. This year we have LOTS of variety, such as:
  • Battle royale
  • Battlefield
  • Battlegrounds
  • Insert more battle things here
Anyway, E3 is pretty exciting if you're interested in games, even if you're not too interested in most of the announcements. If you're keen on watching the presentations live, some kind soul has created a website to help you know when they're on in your region.

The first presentation is EA, in about 14 hours from now. Expect a lot of Battlefield, starring random celebrities and youtubers.

I barely care about anything E3 offers, but I do watch Giant Bomb's coverage. I'm willing to listen to any predictions, though!

What I want:
  • A new Valve teaser, doesn't even have to be Half-Life 3. I think they're going to want to prove they're still doing something.
  • From Nintendo: Metroid Prime 4, Pokemon Switch (unlikely), Wonderful 101 on Switch. New IPs.
  • Something all new by FromSoftware, or a revival of one of their more obscure older titles (Kuon, King's Field)
  • Cyberpunk 2077 revealed, and it's a tight, single-player RPG experience in a much smaller world than The Witcher 3.
What we'll get:
  • Nu-Doom II: Hell on Earth U will probably show up.
  • Sony will demonstrate some sort of new dad simulator cobbled together from some long lost franchise.
  • Rabbids x Nintendo IP: The Memening.
  • EA acting faux apologetic about loot boxes, before demonstrating some brand new way to go about being shitters.

I actually attended E3 last year, when they opened it up to public for the first time.

Finally, I was inside on the floor, but the lines to play the new games were way too long to be worth the wait.

So I attended the announcements, which was pretty cool. But the best part of the convention was talking to the independent game developers directly. They are a scrappy bunch, but they are also the most passionate about what they're doing.

I don't plan to attend this year, because the price has gone up, and I feel that I had gotten most of what I wanted from it last year already.

I am actually eagerly awaiting a few presentations this year. There are a number of titles that I am interested in but have very little information about:
  • Fallout76 is a curveball Bethesda Game Studios threw out not two weeks ago. Will be interesting to see where all these rumours of an online game lead.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 could be relevant to my interests, despite the only CDPR game I've played being The Witcher 3 which I thought was seriously over-hyped.
  • Battlefield V has split the community with it's reveal trailer, but the changes to gameplay and the news regarding no paid DLC definitely has piqued my curiosity.
  • RAGE2 could also be interesting. I would have preferred DEUM2 but that's not exactly out of the question if Bethesda isn't lying about having a lot more to reveal.
As for everything else, I'm sure Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft will have stuff to show off for their console markets, but none of it is relevant to me as an exclusively PC gamer.

E3 is nice. Except for it has a 3 in it therefore Valve will never set foot or rather a foot in it. They are not too fond of a full-sized E either. It is sure nice to talk to random developers. Some of them smell of 7Up and Pizza. Others smell of Coca-Cola but hey, give them.a break! The guys do hard work. As for E3, well it's nice.

I would take my son, except that E3 has a no-one-under-18 policy.

I'm so distant to the gaming marketplace at the moment. I've lost all passion for it.
I'm enjoying the hell out of Breath of the Wild and Mario was pretty good, but other than that the only thing I really have any desire to play is PUBG and I just don't have the time available to commit to it. The Switch works because I can play it on my commute.

Urby's EA Press Conference Breakdown

Battlefield V - Two weeks ago we got a one minute "in game" teaser. Tonight we got a one minute "in game" multiplayer reveal... Very little in the way of actual gameplay. Apparently, also two weeks ago, the press got a three hour gameplay presentation talking about what is new in Battlefield V. The actual players are still in the dark as far as I'm concerned. Instead, they announce the Battle Royale mode that nobody wanted and briefly touch on customisation and a couple of gameplay features. Very very weak presentation

FIFA 19 - Something about football. Pass

Origin Access Premium - Likely a higher subscription fee for the same features as Origin Access. More money grubbing from the fat cats. Pass.

Battlefront 2 - Dice developer admits that they fucked up and claims that they are making changes, but in no great detail. Then talks about upcoming DLC for the fifty or so people still willing to spend money on this train wreck.

Unravel Two - A sequel to a game I've never heard of. Probably something that I would play with the kids. Cutesy co-op puzzle platformer. Apparently available right now. That's a pretty short reveal to release window, I'll give them that.

Sea of Solitude - Third person platformer which focuses on ones inner demons. The story focuses on feelings of loneliness, helplessness and hopelessness. Sounds like a good time...

Madden 19 - Time to make a brew.

Command and Conquer: Rivals - EA exceeds all expectations, deciding that there aren't quite enough nails in this particular coffin. Looks bollocks.

ANTHEM - Following the abysmal Battlefield showcase, this was the other one I was vaguely interested in from EA. Happy to say that interest has been flattened and is unlikely to come back. Looks very much like a Destiny clone, and that demo got old fast.

Summary
EA continues to push the same bullshit that players allow them to get away with, releasing sports games with a higher number in the title. They also continue their trend of butchering previously beloved franchises and finally fail to present their upcoming titles in any positive light. First show of E3 2018 and it's a complete bust. Golf clap for you EA. Golf clap and a bullet to the back of the head.

First time I hear about this thing. Went to youtube only to discover that there's just a teaser, 5 years old. Now I have to read about Cyberpunk 2020. Has anyone from here played the boardgame this videogame is based on? (Cyberpunk 2020).

I heard about it a few years ago. I'm simply interested in the cyberpunk aesthetic and the fact that it's an RPG by competent developers. It all hinges on a number of things when I see actual game play footage. Specifically character customisation, interesting combat and meaningful role playing aspects.

There might be 37 people attending while everyone else is playing Fortnight at home.

Yeah, but in terms of announcements E3 has been pretty boring in the last few years. It's more about digging through the trash to find the few things that really excite you. But unfortunately sometimes you just get nothing....

Anyway, next up is Microsoft's presentation, probably nothing exciting here unless you like Halo or maybe Gears of War. Oh, and they'll probably spend a lot of time talking about Minecraft. That all said, Microsoft does usually pull out a few random new IPs from their smaller studios, so maybe they'll have something good hiding amongst their usual stuff.

I sure hope they don't try and pretend Hololens is still a good idea for gaming. I've tried a Hololens, the visible region is the size of a postage stamp and the gesture interactions are shoddy at best.

Apparently Battlefield V will be shown off in the Microsoft presentation. Maybe some actual fucking gameplay?? Maybe...

That's pretty much the only game I have any interest in this year, besides Cyberpunk 2077 which I know nothing about and Fallout76 which I know is a Fallout game.

OK, so Microsoft just totally bombarded us with information. Here are the main things I personally took away from it.

Fallout 76 is four times the size of Fallout 4 and is definitely set in West Virginia. The gameplay trailer showed off some really beautiful wasteland areas to explore but made no reference to any of the leaks regarding multiplayer.

PUBG has definitely fallen from grace. Their trailer regarding upcoming features for the console version got a very withdrawn golf clap.

Dying Light 2 is not only coming, but it features consequences to your actions in quests and the narrative designer is Chris Fucking Avellone, one of my all time favourite writers in the industry. Seems to be leaning more towards an RPG, which I am in favour of one hundred percent.

After five years of speculation based on a teaser trailer that showed NOTHING, Cyberpunk 2077 is confirmed to be a thing. Might even see some gameplay soon... maybe in another five years?

Cyberpunk 2077 and Sekiro are definitely the two that interest me the most. I'm hoping some Cyberpunk gameplay will be shown after the conferences, but I'm all for the world they've shown off. As for Sekiro it looks to have that trademark FromSoftware combat, but I'm guessing from that footage it's more story-driven, faster paced adventure. I'm betting all the souls flavour stuff like bonfires and estus are gone, and they'll experiment more with new systems to push for more agile combat.

While I'm sure everyone else is going to write up detailed reactions and reviews for Bethesda's E3 conference, I have only one thing important enough that I have to say it first:

I forgive Todd Howard for not delivering the dynamic economy he promised for Skyrim way back in the middle of 2011, because this is a thing that actually exists.

A lot of stuff in the Bethesda Showcase. I'm only interested in a few things personally

Things what tickled me genitals (Good)
  • RAGE2 looks like a good time. A little more crazy than the original, which was definitely what it needed
  • DOOM: Eternal is definitely on my radar. DOOM 2016 is one of the better single player FPS games in recent memory
  • Fallout76 looks like a hell of a lot of fun. It's something new and definitely different. I've got no issue with it being online. A lot of my favourite games already are and this seems to have a few interesting and amusing features.
  • The Elder Scrolls: Blades is a mobile game, sure. However, it does look like it could be an interesting adventure. I'll likely play in on PC, and it's totally free so why not? :P
  • Starfield. I know nothing, but it's a singleplayer BGS sci-fi game, so I'm intrigued.
  • The Elder Scrolls 6. Again, no info, but I know I'm going to want it.
Things what left me genitals be (Meh)
  • Elder Scrolls Online... I just... I don't care
  • Elder Scrolls Legends is something I have downloaded and played and... I mean it's a card game. I'm kinda over it.
  • Quake Champions was a very generic online FPS when I last played it. I don't suspect that has changed.
  • PREY DLC is basically prop hunt.
  • Wolfenstein: Youngblood could be fun. I really enjoyed The New Order but I've yet to try any of the others. There's just other games I'd rather play

Well the Ubisoft, PC Gamer and Sony conferences have come and gone. Not much there that interests me personally, except for Nioh 2 and a few others. Nioh 1 is a treasure that out-Dark-Soul'd Dark Souls. I look forward to the inevitable arms race between FromSoftware and Team Ninja.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 got a new trailer and some very quick gameplay footage. It looks nothing like the original and is pushing for a gritty, space-faring opera thing now, I'm sure that's interesting to some people.

The Last of Us 2 got a gameplay reveal and it's becoming impossible to tell where the script begins and ends. If you're a fan of that, Oscar bait with zombies, and creepy uncanny valley faces, it's probably the game for you.

Rick & Morty guy has the most Rick & Morty looking game on the way. I'm sure somebody laughed.

Resident Evil 2's remake also got a trailer, but no word on if it's going to have the classic Resident Evil gameplay yet. Also one for fans of creepy uncanny valley faces.

Hideo 'Somebody Stop Him' Kojima revealed a new trailer for Death Stranding, leaving everyone more confused than ever. I blame everybody for enabling this madman.

Grimdark seems to be the trend right now, so maybe that's why the colourful new Spiderman looks interesting to me. Open world games have to have something special to interest me these days, so I hope this one turns out creative and fun.

Aaaand loads of other games that are escaping my memory. Only Nintendo's presentation left to go, now!

How I felt after hearing Fallout 76 was announced and continue to witness a franchise I cherished from Fallout 1 and 2 become more and more warped with each installment, a changed animal from the love I first remembered, slipping through my fingers:

It's kinda weird seeing the frivolous tone they took with nukes in that trailer, given that the series as a whole ultimately serves as a condemnation of them. Also, I've seen reports to the effect of there being no offline mode at all, with no truly solo experience in turn. That alone makes me care way less than I already didn't.

Doom was one of the first games I played when it was released back in 1993. It was leaps and bounds beyond Wolfenstein 3D in terms of gameplay and ambiance.

Unfortunately, Doom 3 was a fall from grace. The most recent reincarnation revived the classic series, and I am eager to see what Id has done with it.

Doom 3 was god awful. One of the worst games I've ever played. Doom 2016 was a blast if you ignore the multiplayer. No mention of MP in DOOM: Eternal, but hopefully they don't fuck it up again.

I admit I've not had a lot of experience with the original games, but I really don't see the big deal with developers trying something new. Fallout 4 was a bad entry into the series. Fallout 76 is at least a spin-off so I don't mind the online aspect.

Personally, I much prefer Bethesda Game Studios current approach to game development compared to say... hmmm, of the top of my head, Valve Software.

Yes. It's using the Fallout 4 engine and assets and will likely be maintained by the former Battlecry team while BGS moves on to their next singleplayer games.

A sequel would have been called "Fallout 5."

I really don't see the big deal with developers trying something new.

I think Bethesda did a really good job of transferring a game world from overhead 2D to first person 3D ( F3 or NV and maybe 4 too (havn't played it) are really good games) but so much was lost in that process. F1 and 2 had a very bleak and often brutal atmosphere to it. Just a sense of hopelessness. Even the music had this weird neo/primitive/industrial tone to it.

There were things in the Bethesda Fallout games like the pre-war slapstick undertone and music, the over saturation of stuff like Nuka-cola, the patriotic themes, the "cash register" sound effect when you find new location... That wasn't "fallout" to me. While plenty of that stuff was in the originals most of it sat subtle in the background whereas Bethesda took a lot of that stuff and amped it up way too much. A lot of people started on the franchise at F3, which is understandable but they didn't have any expectations from the older titles.

Like Satch says, went into Doom 3 after playing the originals and was disappointing. I didn't play a whole lot of the originals before I played Doom 3 so I went in fresh and as a result, I LOVE Doom 3 but maybe because I didn't have any expectations from older titles?
Posted 6 years ago2018-06-13 13:59:33 UTC Post #339909
I went to Doom 3 after the first games and wasn't disappointed at all. I approach most games trying to limit my hype and expectations, and focus on the actual gameplay mechanics and plot.
