A new mini competition is a go! As the brief states, your goal is to make a singleplayer map that focuses on a theme: Ascension.

As this is a mini competition, you must manage your time effectively. Don't bite off more than you can chew, and leave plenty of time for testing. Good luck and have fun!

Does this have to be a brand new map (never released before) or can we use content we've released before?

Brand new please. Wouldn't be fair otherwise.

Very excited. Have an idea in my head that I've wanted to try for ages. Does it strictly have to be HL1 / Source or is something like Sven Coop applicable?

The competition refers to "the" player in singular, so I'm guessing that only singleplayer games in the Valve universe are allowed.

But best to wait for an official confirmation from Urby. Something worth a note and he confirmed that to me directly on Discord: Counter-Strike: Condition Zero - Deleted Scenes is forbidden.

I would say base games only, given the rules regarding custom code.
Can the entry be made of multiple maps?
Absolutely.

It's been ages since I've last used Hammer, but this sounds like a good excuse to get back into it...and of course, it helps that I also happen to like this competition's theme.

Maybe I'll add an entry of my own!

Here, 2kliksphilip got involved in judging a map competition back on RunThinkShootLive. Might be worth giving him a shout to raise some awareness?

Time to see if I can muster up the motivation to reboot and retrofit the idea I had for your descending thing.

What does "community vote" actually entail? This seems like one of the only compos so far sans judges

Phillip always used to include a "don't post your entry anyplace else for a month following the contest" rule, does anything similar apply here?

No, it's your content - it belongs to you and you can do whatever you like with it.

I'm trying my best not to linger on details and to try and get a working skeleton of my map(s) before I pretty them up. Y'know, after I've successfully opened Sledge, which is usually a whole separate challenge.

Every time I think "I should keep mapping" I go do something else.
So, poorly.

I want this format to live, and I know that breaking through these mapping lulls is the way to do it, but man! The resistance is strong.

I've never been great at the whole willpower thing.

Got a recurring bug that's making one of my gameplay things frustrating, going to spend some time trying to fix it. Chugging along. I can say that the quality of polish is going to vary wildly as time pressure builds up, but I'm vowing to submit something actually playable, and hopefully complete

About to ask a buddy to playtest part of the map while I start working on the next area... 1/4 done so far, doesn't look good :/
Posted 5 years ago2019-02-25 06:01:42 UTC Post #342084
I'm increasingly feeling like my concept lives and dies by the quality of the details, and that I super don't have the time this week to actually put those details in or critically think about how to design them. Very helpful also is the fact that this week I will be working double the number of shifts I normally have!
So, uh, I think I'd prefer to hang onto my concept for now. Unless I come up with something else that is marvelously small in scope in the next few days, I guess I fucked up have to bow out.

I submitted an entry but I don't see an option to upload anything other than a screenshot. My entry is only 8mb so I should be able to upload the ZIP directly. Right?
Posted 5 years ago2019-03-01 05:50:20 UTC Post #342097
EDIT: Ok, updated. You should be able to upload your entry now. Closing time changed to Sunday, extensions are traditional anyway.

Ah yeah, the community vote was originally meant to be for screenshot-only competitions. I'll fix it up tonight, and then extend the close date for an extra few days so people can update their entries. Sorry about that.

It's actually good that I wasn't able to upload it earlier because I just noticed I forgot to include the BNS file. Also, I added a few things to the readme.

Played through each of the maps and I had a pretty fun time with em! Voted for Instant's because I think it was the most creative with the theme and had the most polish, but the others were pretty close. BoxFigs had a pretty well-designed puzzle map that was alot of fun, had me thinking with portals again, and CPrip's had some really fun combat. Interested to see how the voting turns out.

Had a lot of fun playing Emergence, been a long time since I'd played portal so was good to get back into that mindset! Upmine had some good onslaught moments, although did get stuck for a while before realising I had to shoot off the lock, rather than crowbar-ing it! The voice acting added a nice level of story! Good wee bunch, a bit saddened we've only three entries

Looking forward to playing the entries tonight (or at least trying to depending on family and responsibilities.) I've not touched Portal since finishing Portal 2 so will be interesting to get back into that. :P

I recently cleaned out my Steam Library and uninstalled lots of games... good thing I only ditched Portal 2 and not Portal because whoa Emergence sure rocked! I had to refresh my thinking-with-portals skills a bit because I got utterly stuck at first but once my mind was back in Aperture mode, it was a pretty awesome map, certainly en par with stock maps! If I was eligible to vote, BoxFigs would get my vote.

Crystalline was visually breathtaking but I'm afraid my platformer skills are a wee bit rusty and I got frustrated enough to noclip past most of the puzzles - pretty cool item puzzle tho was the elevator supposed to despawn at the end?

As for my own map.... after having played the other entries, I feel like I proudly upgraded from drawing stick figures to creating sketches, only to find I was competing against Michelangelo. Still, I'm happy with how it turned out, in comparison to my older stuff, it was a nice step forward for me and it appears I did a good enough job staging the combat encounters.

Are they all Source maps?
