Yep, that's when you charge and shoot with tau on a wall, ceiling, floor or any object, and you're dead!

Does anyone know why that happens? Does it have to do with areaportals? I know that this bug can be fixed partially by connecting your brushes in different ways before compiling the map, however that is not always possible nor favorable.

its not a bug, its a feature. It happens when walls are thick. Walls behind which there is void doesn't count because you need an opposite face for the game to measure the thickness. In crossfire many buildings actually have inaccessible interiors with thin walls to minimize selfgaussing, modern compile tools automatically remove such inaccessible areas, which can be disabled with a certain compile paramter. Something like -nofill, not sure exactly.

If your floor is a thick brush and your entire map is enclosed in a big skybox textured cube, thats why it happens.

This is probably caused by the Gauss's radius damage. Can you reliably reproduce this issue so it can be tested?

Edit: it might be this bug: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/halflife/issues/1545

Does the description match what you're experiencing?

stop breaking and ruining half-life for f**s sake! Whether its a feature or a bug it doesnt matter, thousands of maps have been made according to these mechanisms and people played for 20 years this way, it is the way it is and it should be! im getting annoyed of this bullshit

I never said it would or should be fixed, i'm just trying to find out what his problem is.

calm down Bruce :P
Solokiller did nothing wrong.
Also, it is a bug. And can be reduced by the methode of thin walls.

So self gauss was never a feature?
I've always thought of it as a punishment for not handling the gun properly :D

Letting it charge for too long is a feature, the radius damage is more accidental since it can happen if the conditions are met at any range.

I always figured that this was just to emphasise the gauss gun's experimental and unpredictable nature? More hilarious than annoying to be honest. I wouldn't say this needed to be fixed in Half-Life, but I can see why modders might not want it to work this way.

changing game mechanics of a 20 year old cult classic is like changing the shape of mona lisas nose or changing the tone of guitar in a remastered album because someone doesnt like it. Sometimes i really dislike github

Good thing Valve doesn't just blindly do whatever they're asked.

well they did remove the _special command people used for decades for bhopping and the like, windows players will just downgrade, linux players are stuck. There are alternatives but its still stupid. They already did some stuff blindly

Oh sorry, I omitted a single word in this context - my post has been updated. I'm talking about the "glitch" where you shoot anything with gauss and it causes instant death to the player or high damage, like the beam is ricocheting back at you.

I assume that's what they're talking about.
