Here's the place to discuss, ask questions, or show off your work-in-progress screenshots for the Vanilla HLDM Competition celebrating Half-Life's 25th Anniversary!

The prizes are serious this time, it's my last available copy of Raising the Bar that'll be shipped to the winner. Good luck, I can't wait to see what you come up with!

I use JACK to do my mapping. Is there anything I need to do to allow it to work with the updated limits, like a new .fgd file? If there is, how can I find and install it?

Nope, you're fine just using the fgd that came with JACK. There were some limits increased with the 25th Anniversary update but they weren't directly mapping-related limits for the most part.

I'm assuming I can't submit a vanilla map I've made in the past? Or change an Op4 map I made into vanilla?

This contest is right up my alley but I'm too busy lately to do a new one from scratch :(

That's not really in the spirit of this competition, correct. If and when we ever get a playtest server together, you could ask for your map to be included so it gets some playtesting and exposure but it wouldn't be eligible for the competition, sorry.

That's fair. Thanks for answering! Hope you get some good stuff!

You can't prove that a map I submit is not a map I made twenty years ago. It's especially true when the theme of this competition is so generic.

If you have a map you made twenty years ago that is up to scratch then by all means turn it in. Though I will say, a map made 20 years ago is probably going to be pretty shit considering the tools available at the time. Without making considerable changes, I doubt it would stand much chance against the entries made with the increased limitations, JACK/TrenchBroom and more modern compile tools.

Yeah, we can't prove it. It's against the spirit of the competition.

Hi, where do I actually make a submission? Would I attach the .bsp file to a forum post, or DM the .bsp to one of the judges?

In the meantime, this layout should look pretty familiar to seasoned FPS veterans...

At the bottom of the competition brief, use the 'submit entry' form.

It looks somewhat reminiscent of E1M1 but larger and linked up in different places.

Hi,

Is the deadline of January 3rd, 2024 the last date to delivery the final map or just the limit for registrations ?
Have a good day.

January 3rd, 2024 is the last day that you can submit your entry. At exactly 2024-01-03 23:59:59 UTC the form will disappear and the competition page will change to state that the competition is done and awaiting review.

OK, thank you for this answer.
Would it be possible to know the deadline for delivery of the map or is it too early ?

I started making a vanilla styled map but ended creating something non vanilla i guess, im not sure.
I will submit my map nevertheless if it doesn't fit i hope you guys simply disqualify it and i will release this map as a non competing map on your lovely website.

p.s.
Can you create a competition where the theme is yellow and concrete? Then have a chance of winning! (JOKE)

can we please consider having a re-submission for edge cases, before we setup the play day? seen a couple members in discord who had to make last minute changes, but submission was over. (such as map-breaking errors, like missing texture or model). for instance i had a dead otis.mdl easter egg, i thought otis.mdl was included in the valve folder, as he was in mine. so now i've changed it to barney. but i'd hate to see my map, and others, miss out on playtime because of edge mistakes like that. maybe a 12 hour window or something

Yep, I'm working through the submission issues on Discord, all good.
