There are lots of example maps in the vault to give you an idea of how things are built. But the best way to learn is by looking at some tuts and then getting your hands dirty by working with the editor.

It's been recommended that starting small and just making a room and filling it with a bunch of entities and detail is a good way to learn how to do things with hammer. Your first maps dont need to have any point to them, they are just a learning experience.

pfft. real life, it sucks for inspiration. its so unrealistic :D

if thats really your views then look at some mods very closely, or even just play through hl again. i think half life and its mods are the best place for inspiration, as they show what can/cant be done with the engine.

Real life can be very inspiring, ministeve...

Plus, real life can guide you to make your maps resembling reality better, thus creating a stronger sense of place... never underestimate reality... :)

Half-Life mods can be very inspiring, but hey, it's still not all that can be done with the engine! Every now and then someone finds a way to go beyond the limitationg by some trickery... Don't limit yourself!

Then again, don't take that as an excuse to ignore the given limitations... performance is important. Good-looking maps with 1 fps aren't popular, obviously...

looking at a map with entities your not familiar with doesnt help, trust me. add shudders, broken windows, falling apart gutter, decal some graffiti, falling apart sidewalk, flashing porch light(s) with sparks, all the sort =D

lol... look at militia. one of the crappiest house ever, yet no-one questions it's authenticity. let that be a lesson to you.

Well, Militia's house design, on the interior, is....eww, but on the outside, rather resembles some house you'd expect to find in the middle of the desert. It's the texture set that really works on that map.

go to cool places with good archetexture. Go to random old resturaunts and see the archetexture of the ceiling, the bathroom, whatever. just go around and get Ideas in your daily life. You have to have a good eye to be a good mapper.
