More nOOb questions here. What exactly is a leaf and is there a way to find a specific leaf, like the way you can find specific brushes, in Hammer?

No, there isn't, as leaves are only produced during the compile process.

I very strongly advise you to read this article. It'll explain everything. Well, not everything really. Just VIS, leaves, etc.

A leaf is a thin piece of herbal cells, usually to be found at the end of tree branches or bushes, mostly green.
This might also help.

Thank you, that is so helpful!!! :P

But honestly, thanks for the links, and I guess the short answer is that there is no simple way to find a problem leaf... I'm having problems with the infamous, "Leaf portals saw into leaf" errors during compile...

The article Seventh-Monkey posted described the 'Leaf portal saw into leaf' error. Go and take another look, you'll find out.

Also, check Tommy14's site, it adresses nearly all possible errors... :)

Actually it is quite easy to a problem leaf when there is one.
The error message always contains the coords of the leaf.

You don't really need to know a thing about leaves, unless you get something like the MAX_LEAF_FACES error, and the leaf errors are pretty much all explained on Tommy14's site (See ministeve's post above).

If you want to build decent maps, you should know about leaf, hint'n skip etc.
If you don't understand leafs/visibility you wont be able to use hint brushes efficiently.
All that will help you to keep your r_speeds low.

Try compiling with VIS -full. That was specifically designed to correct this error.

TWHL has a glossary anyway, in case you want to know the meaning of any of these terms.

Thanks for the information. Very helpful. I seem to be getting the message that this isn't a big deal and I shouldn't worry about it unless there are loads of them. I'm going to do a full vis and see if that fixes the problems.
