You might also look in your pak file, in the gfxenv folder, to see the available skies... but a list might be handy now and then...

Either you put in the name incorrectly, or your copy of HL is bugged.

You know.... I never really got why the people at valve started with 8 for the Xen skies.
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-30 09:04:01 UTC Post #37694
Probably because they had already 7 skies made before wich didn't make it into the game, as is often the case for such large projects. Not all content finally makes it in the release. Just like the extra models in the .pak file, they were scrapped out (but left in the .pak file for some reason. Probably because it was hard to filter the used stuff from the unused...)

Make sure that you have specified a sky in map properties, and have put the sky texture where you want the sky, simehong2000.

my step to make a sky is right here:
1. shield all my map whit block blue texture (6 side)
2. make holow (-12) out side the block blue texture (covering my map to)
3. open map properties and than type sky name (blue)
It's that right?? :(

Do not skybox in your whole map. Read up about skies and skyboxes before proceeding.

Enter one of the skynames above, too, like desert or morning.

simehong, there is an example linked with the sky tutorial.
Make a box
Make it texture: "SKY"
Hollow it
type in the sky name in the properties e.g "city"

whit that way i can see the sky whit worldcraft.
You can't see sky in Hammer...
It will only show up as a blue texture.

Skies only appear in the compiled map.

Yes, this is called "skyboxing" and will make your map compile less fast, and play badly too.

Yes do not ever skybox your map. Model your sky like you would your buildings, make sure you have a good seal around the edges. Skyboxing creates voids and causes other problems.

Skyboxing creates voids
Well, no, skyboxing creates sky :P . The bad thing about skyboxing is that VIS thinks you'll see the sides outside of the actual map that are only visible to the skybox, so it renders them as well, creating unnecessary polys and upping your r_speed count significantly.

In fact, any space not connected to the void gets compiled, so it's not only the case with skyboxing.

Note that any face that touches a skybrush gets compiled, wich adds a bit to your compile time.
