Yesterday I started fumbling around with Hammer again with the end goal of having a relatively playable map for me and some friends in Sven Coop. It took me about and hour to figure out what the problem was with my configuration, (turned out I had just about everything pointing in the wrong direction) but things got underway well. Having to move the map each time I wanted to test it was a bit of a pain, but it didn't matter much. I tested it about four times, and then when I went to test it after adding some things, (a skybox was one of them) steam locks up while "precaching resources".

I'm only using 2 WADS, and neither is custom. Problem-check doesn't give me anything. I don't have a 1.5 install.

When you say a skybox, do you mean a huge all-consuming hollowed box, or just a sky brush?

If the former, remove it and make sure your level is leak-tight correctly, and this will likely fix it.

As for the map-moving thing, one could write a batch file to do that automatically. Ask me if you're interested.

I took out the skybox and sealed up the outdoor areas, but when I compile it's the same as usual. I could post that, if you like.

Wow, that's a lot of errors you got there!

You see, each error names an Entity number and a Brush number. The entity numbers are 0 so you need to look at the brush numbers. 43, 44, 50 and 51 are the problem brushes.
First, hit Alt + P in Hammer to bring up the Problems box. Select any problems and hit the Fix button. Now check again. No problems? Then compile the map.
In case you still get errors, hit Ctrl + Shift + G (Go to brush number) in Hammer. Then fill in the number of one of the brushes and that brush will be selected. Remove it and remake it, be sure to create a correct brush this time (not two faces may be on the same plane).

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Yeah, the problem brushes were the ones I used in place of a skybox. I put the skybox back, and it compiled correctly. Then it ran okay.

I'm really confused.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-06 13:04:04 UTC Post #56968
The skybox method causes (unnecessary) longer compile times and often a worse performance. Just place individual skybrushes so, that the inside of the level is sealed off from the outside. Just stick with simple cubic brushes for now, to avoid invalid brushes. Treat them just like you treat other brushes, after all, it's just sealing off your level...

if a sky box is clsing the level just like any other brush it isnt slower isnt it!?
if it s then plz explain it
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-06 16:19:25 UTC Post #57037
Yes, it is, because the compile programs and the game both have to work on the faces on the outside walls of your map pointlessly. This produces poorer FPS in-game and much longer compile times.

Any room or space that has no connection to the void is being compiled. Every face that touches a skybrush is being compiled (although often not rendered in-game). Two things that could help you speed up the compile process a bit...

So it's not the fact that it's a skybrush, it's the fact that it's a box surrounding the level that makes the compile process slower. I hope you understand by now how that happens...

Now I'm getting some "NULL ENTITY" when I try to run it. I"ve got some monstermakers and nodes down, so I'm not sure what the problem is now.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-06 22:33:39 UTC Post #57121
Hate to double post again, but I fixed my null entity problem (monstermakers), but now it's locking up at precaching resources again. It worked earlier. I have no leaks. This is really starting to irk me.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-06 23:25:53 UTC Post #57126
Precaching resources takes a rather long time, especially on mid to lower level computers. If its not done in like an hour, though, then something might be wrong.

O_o

It never takes this long. The map loaded fine a few tests before (before I added most of the monster + item ents) Heck, I've made another map with monsters and items and it was pretty big, but no prob. on loading.

Could it have anything to do with nodes?
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-07 01:42:22 UTC Post #57138
Nodes wouldn't be a problem.

The reason it takes longer to load after you've added monsters and such is that the game must precache, or load into the temporary cache file the game manages, the models, animations, sprites etc. associated with the monsters and entities you've added, as to not cause lag during a game.

Info_nodes are used to let monsters know where they can go. When placed correctly, these entities can really improve the smartness of your enemies. Usually, after a map is started for the first time, it has to build a nodegraph, this is a mapname.nod file, created in mapsgraphs. This takes a little time, but should have nothing to do with precaching resources.

So tell us, after you added what entities did this error occur?

Oh, Svencoop I see... perhaps their own forums can give you more specific answers, as SC entities can react different than HL ones, plus they have a lot more entities added...
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-07 16:15:46 UTC Post #57288
Well, I know about precaching. It's not taking a long time to precache-- It's locking up during precaching.

I'm not using any entities I haven't before, nor am I placing them in funny places (Unless a monster on a ramp would have anything to do with it, but earlier I had no such thing and I had the same problem) Nor am I using any that are from opfor or sven.

No errors during the compile? No problems in Hammer?
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-07 16:26:35 UTC Post #57297
No compile errors. No problems, save "No player start", but that never seems to go away.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-07 16:27:31 UTC Post #57298
Put in an info_player_start and that error should go away. Then compile and see what happens.

You never know...
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-07 16:28:48 UTC Post #57299
Yeah. But some other maps I've made worked perfectly fine iwth info_player_deathmatch.

And so has this one. That's what makes it so frustrating.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-07 16:36:01 UTC Post #57300
I really don't know what other thing could possibly cause the problem so I'd say just try it.

Perhaps you can upload your map into the Problems section of the Map Vault so we can experiment a bit.

Not now, I need some sleep... good night.

Thanks. And good night.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-07 17:32:22 UTC Post #57322
Okay. It worked. Now I've got two more problems:

Both the doors open at the same time.
My dimensions are off.

Dimensions can be fixed easily enough, but I'm not sure what makes the problem with the doors.
