I am fascinated by the Chinese equivalent of TWHL. Take a look at the Chinese version of the Hammer tutorial.

Fascinating! :)

I just pictured 5000 asian sweatshop workers making maps in a dingy darkly lit room

Is that supposed to be a Hammer Tutorial? Looks more like a spam thread to me. :/

Looks like a general game forum to me, not really a community site like TWHL. They use way too large signatures bytheway! :P
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-27 09:13:58 UTC Post #171114
Large signatures..psh, go to the HIT forums, it takes me 10 minutes to load a thread.

You guys really need to make some characters for HL and Hammer :) I see normal stuff and then HAMMER or HL2 hehe

Signatures are stupid and pointless.

I disagree. They're usefull as a subtle form of advertising. I put a link to my portfolio in my sig on any forum that allows it and I believe that's one of the ways my site gets its traffic.

The problem is, some people just abuse it with their images. I think limiting the amount of characters, or disabling images, or both, works well to prevent that.
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-27 09:46:34 UTC Post #171118
Limiting the size of signatures works quite well.

Couldnt see anything in that forum except images and blocks. probably some lettertype i havent installed.

I always disable signatures, anyone who uses them for advertising is warped in the head. Sad bastards.

Christ, those signatures are ludicrous.
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-27 13:54:47 UTC Post #171152
Judging from what they're writing, they're even younger than the members at TWHL--probably twelve year olds.

It's a thread on mapping for CS:Source. The old Worldcraft has a Chinese version, but the new Hammer only comes in English. The Valve tutorials (and most other tutorials) are also in English. This makes these Chinese mappers hard to learn how to map.

I am considering of joining that community, to give them some pointers, and helping out my people. No one seems to have any clue on how to map.

The only problem is that it takes me five minutes to type a single sentence in Chinese. It's very painful.

Sounds like a bit of a disadvantage. Do you still speak it fine?

I can still speak fluently, but typing and writing it is another matter. It's not as simple as spelling the words out.

Nevertheless, I started a thread at the new community I joined. I figured it would be a good opportunity for me to brush up on my vanishing Chinese skills.

Is the little dinky low-degree sign the end of a sentence? Chinese is read left-right, isn't it?

Thanks. I'll delete the link to CStrike and link it to TWHL instead.

Even though they can't understand the mapping tutorials or participate in the forum discussion, they can still admire maps made by our members.

Chinese is really meant to be read from right-to-left and up-to-down, but it's too difficult to modify this for the computer age. So we adapt.

and the non-existant signatures.

and Satch, im sure some of them understand English, they are after all chinese, and the chinese goverment is trying to be the best it can be. and that means making their kids learn english
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-27 18:10:14 UTC Post #171192
All high school students are mandated to learn English. It's part of the standard curriculum.

However, most of them can't really read English in the real world. It's a sad truth.

I was just browsing their CS forum, and I thought it's funny that they call a camper "turtle".

There are quite a few female gamers in that forum, to my surprise.

Not only is English a different language group than Chinese, it's an entire different alphabet. Takes loads more time to learn for a chinese than say, a german or swede.

Mandarin ftw! I started learning it last summer, I think it's a great language. The writing though....ugh. The only way you can learn to write chinese is to memorize each character as you go. It's a veeery slow process. (for me at least)

People post foreign languages here all the time. I've seen quite a few threads with scattered Swedish and Dutch.

Chinese characters just look a bit wierder, that's all.

I've always had a question regarding Chinese. If words are logographic instead of alphabetic, is there such a thing as a Chinese dictionary? What would be the criteria to organize these symbols and what would you have to do to look one up?

Dutch. Ahem.
At least those languages use ascii characters. You'd need unicode or such for Chinese, right? How exactly does that work on their systems? Looks like quite a hassle to me with that many characters...
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-28 15:35:30 UTC Post #171338
Uh... saw it on TV a while back. They type out the words in a regular alphabet, then convert it to chinese words.

Seventh: Not without a proper language pack. They're all questionmarks.

This is my profile page for the Chinese Half-Life community. It's interesting to see the similarities. By the way, due to my new member status, the words below my avatar say "stupid newborn dog". It's kinda like the description members get at the SnarkPit (i.e. snark zygote).

Of course there is a Chinese dictionary. It would be utter chaos if there is no standard reference to organize all these characters.

There are two systems to look up words. One is based on pronounciation (phonetics), and the other one is based on the "root" of a character. For example, words that are associated with water all have the same "root" in the character (i.e. lake, river, wet, flood). After looking up the proper "root", the characters are sorted by the number of strokes in the characters.
How exactly does that work on their systems? Looks like quite a hassle to me with that many characters...
It is unwieldy, but no one can change it because it's based on a 6,000 year tradition.

I type the characters using phonetics, and then choose from a list of words that all have the exact same pronounciation. It's not fast, but it gets the job done.

given that each character can be several words, probably about the same time as writing a book in english

I have no idea why I can see them, then. I don't believe I've ever downloaded any Chinese script accessories. Must just be Opera's native superiority.

Nazis were against any non-Caucasian races. So they would never side with the Chinese. Heck, they didn't even like the Japanese, who fought with them in WWII.
