If you pre-ordered Half-Life 2: Episode One then you will receive yet another shameful remake of such a great game.

yes that's right...They made Half Life Deathmatch for Source and guess what...It is exactly like HL1:Source with the nasty textures and the poor attempt at making things look nicer...

Take a gander at this:

Urgh, Nice water and Old HL1 water mixing together = Disgusting...

I got a load more pictures but I'm off to play CS:S with Hunter...See ya ;) Discuss!

Uggghhh....why the hell would I want to play that?!? I'll either play HL1 DM or the DM Source. This combination looks really awful :furious:

WTF? That looks so gay.

Valve should fire the idiot who implemented that immediately.

Why on Earth did they bother?

They did a very wrong move here.
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-02 15:54:03 UTC Post #178021
They didn't actually bother doing anything at all.

I think the process was something like:
1) Open the rmf.
2) Convert the WAD file
3) Select the water texture and replace with a dev_water texture
4) Place a water_lod entity
5) Place a cubemap
6) Compile and buildcubemaps.

What were the changes to HL:Source, it really didn't look different. the only thing I realized was that I pushed a box, and it rolled, really slowly.

Yeah, but Kasperg, think of the coding, adjustments of models, etc.

Models look the same to me...
The thing is, this NOT the HLDM remake we would all like. We'll still have BM:S

I just love how the map snarkpit looks now. Great skybox!

Rapidcore has a new shiny look and shader forcefields

But if you look at other maps like lambda_bunker, you have to admit there's been some improvement.

Have anymore comparisons, I never realized the difference.
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-03 06:44:42 UTC Post #178118
More comparisons using the map "bounce".
In most of the maps, it seems the terrain parts were redone with displacement sufaces. Every light fixture comes with a glow sprite.

This last one was really shocking. Point lights and opaque blue water? I thought only n00bs did that! Maybe they all were all n00bs back in 1998...

Ok seriously, why are you bagging Valve? Anyone who's getting Episode One is also getting this totally free, so who gives a crap if there's only minor additions? Personally, I'm glad: never liked HL2DM (HLDM was a lot better) so having the chance to play HLDM with a little more pizzazz is nicely appealing.

Sure, if we were made to pay an outrageous fee for it (outrageous being more than 10 bucks) then I'd be pretty pissed off at Valve.

I like this a lot!. I hope they will release mapping tools too.

I think you can just use the Source SDK.

You get this for free with Afterm..err Episode One eh?

I wasn't going to buy the expansion, but i will now

That would be cool if they re-did the HLDM all for source. Source textures resembling the old ones, source models, weapons etc. (New ones, not HL2 weapons, HL1 re-done models for source) It looks like all they did was add some blend textures, 3d skybox, and water. Its nice, but not great.

You mean like what they are doing with Black Mesa:Source?
Bounce
Crossfire
Lambda bunker
etc

Well yeah if it's free then you don't have to worry about it. But still they could have put more effort into it.

Thats lookin nice! I never knew about Black Mesa Source :(

Will it have custom weapons for HL1 too?

6 years ago... new technology... deadlines...

We've got a lot more time on our hands to get the most out of an engine, since we don't have deadlines tied to our salary and all. Plus, we're with many mappers, sharing knowledge. Well, you get the idea, you can't simply compare things that easily. ;)

Crossfire turrets have been changed and there's a 3D skybox:
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/3329/crossfire0tk.jpg

HLDM:source uses displacement surfaces and blended textures:

In stalkyard, even physics are involved!
