I have an other good idea for a nice mini-compo:

Construct a statue completely out of brushes... depicting a character, event in the game, or some other thing with a great level of detail. Custom textures alowed, 3 days limit, etc.

I dont know if creating a statue would be to detailed for brushes, but I'm sure you could scale it up a bit!
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-18 23:42:52 UTC Post #190737
Certainly would, and challenging! I like it a lot :)

heh, i would enter then. :D

lol, my idea is being accepted and i dont even map for Half-Life! I feel so cool
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 06:12:33 UTC Post #190770
If Rimrook's willing to take time out of his busy schedule to compete, you can bet it's being accepted ;)

Would you be willing to judge the compo if it's chosen?

Captain P: Night or twilight would probably be the best way, since n00b#2's and mine are both night maps anyway. Or lol, make it sunset, with WCD's "in the light", and the other two sections overshadowed by his big buildings :)

If there is a way I could modify my map to make it easier for you to combine, let me know.

Also, I forgot to thank you for hosting a good/fun compo, and doing the work for the brief page and the countdown timer. This was a lot of fun, and maybe we can do a modified version of it again, as BrushoPolis 2! :)

Can we make a compo about complex doors/trains? I'm just making a door thats made out of 48 small doors... it can be cut down by half but then it wont be so smooth.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 10:44:36 UTC Post #190805
NO!!!!! We are making a detailed room right now. Post your ideas after compo 2 is over. If you want to make these things, put the statue IN the detailed room, bam instant bonus points.

Rowleybob give us some more time okay?
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 12:52:46 UTC Post #190824
Current page will be modified with the new rules and the timer will be reset to 5 days - gotta go now, will read the rest later today.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 13:17:18 UTC Post #190829
I cant judge the entries because I dont have Half-Life :aggrieved: Oh the aggony!

Rowleybob give us some more time okay?
I see no reason to extend the time limit on mini#2. These are mini compos, and I even think 5 days is too much, let alone 10 days!!! Besides, you still have 2 days left which is more than enough ;)
Post your ideas after compo 2 is over.
These compos are designed to last 3-5 days, with one starting immediately after another finishes. It's ludicrous to say that we can't talk about new ideas until the current one is finished.
put the statue IN the detailed room
Um, no.

Captain P: I'm requesting that you not reset the timer, and we'll prepare to start the next one in about two days, which will be the statue competition, unless somebody thinks of something better.

Judges: In the future, I ask that you judge your entries within the same day that the compo ends. Even if there were 10 entries, I don't see how it could take longer than an hour to rate them all--and I don't see these little compos getting that popular anyway.

RotatorSplint: A couple possiblities:

1.Maybe you could choose a judge by proxy--one of the mods would probably do it free of charge :)

2. Buy HL1! :)

3. If you can't find a judge, I'll judge them.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 21:56:47 UTC Post #190881
I would judge...if thats allowed, I could do it in 1 day easily too (I think)
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 21:58:37 UTC Post #190883
Sweet :)

But the final decision is up to Rotor ;)
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 22:30:03 UTC Post #190884
well then I can't participate. I don't have enough time to map my ideas with my job and I'm not going to take a day off just to map for a mini compo. I'll take my time and make a better map with no guidelines over the span of a few weeks or so and then post it in the vault for you all to gawk at.

Um, no.
obviously you don't have a creative mind. A statue in a detailed room would add tons of aesthetic quality. If your computer can run it, I say map it.

Not the point, it's somebody else's compo idea!

Um...

Sry it too me so long to reply, so let me get this stone rolling.

Because I have no HL1, Im not in a position to buy it ATM, and because I dont want anybody to feel that I'm playing favorites towards others on this forum, I think that the person to judge the next compo should be voted for!

The people wanting to be judges should make it clear (i.e. saying "i want to be judge" ;) ) and then we can vote via this thread. You cant vote for yourself. Contestants also cant be judge (duh!).

I hope thats a solution everyone can agree with.

Fine whatever, you can say what you want, but when I release my map it's going to have statues in it.

Mini compo #2 componiers: You have about 8 hours 'till the end, so get those entries in, and Good luck!

VOX: LOL :P

Mini Compo 3: Build a Statue

Construct a statue completely out of brushes... depicting a character, event in the game, or some other thing with a great level of detail.

-Compo Begins Midnight tonight, GMT
-Custom textures alowed
-3 days limit
-Judge will be selected by voting

Rotor: If you have anything to add, please do so in here, and Captain P or myself will post the compo page/timer today sometime.

Bob, looks like you've got it all covered, thanks for your help :D

sure wish I could compete though... :
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-21 14:36:35 UTC Post #191178
i would be interested in judging!! haven't really got time to compete in this one, but would certainly enjoy having a say in the winners!
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-21 14:42:47 UTC Post #191179
Sweet. I vote for Alexb911 to judge :)

If your selected to judge, just know you have submit the results within the day that the compo ends. This one ends 3 days from midnight tonight, GMT.

Build A Statue competition page

(This will be the official competition page, unless Captain P updates it with his prettier timer :))

Holy shit this is going to be hard. Anyone have any friendly tips to get started? lol
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-21 23:06:10 UTC Post #191222
Yeah, I can't imagine making a statue like that without a model, which is why I'm not entering. :)
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-22 00:18:50 UTC Post #191225
That means you're elegible for being judge! :P

so far, Alexb911 is our only candidate.

As for ideas on a model idea... perhaps model an NPC fighting or somthing. It doesnt have to be exact scale or anything, use the scale that gives you the level of detail you want.

Hope that helped.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-22 01:36:12 UTC Post #191229
I would like to judge, I have HL1 and am untalented at mapping in it (I do HL2 mapping), yet I know good brush work when I see it..
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-22 01:39:19 UTC Post #191230
ok, candidates for judge:
alexb911 - 1
snpbond - 0

As the contest end date draws near, ill count up the votes, n see who will judge!
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-22 09:57:50 UTC Post #191261
Haha wouldn't it be funny if I submitted a 6 box stature of a person and won because nobody else entered?
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-22 10:35:02 UTC Post #191268
btw, its "allowed" not "aloud" (on official website)

sorry, having a seventh moment! ;)

Yeah, I can't imagine making a statue like that
:) It's what makes it challenging/fun.

I've seen your work srry, and I don't think this compo would be too hard for you... at least give a try before giving up ;)
Anyone have any friendly tips to get started?
Dude, you're one of the better bruswork guys here, you should be giving US tips :) The "Twisted Column" project was much more difficult imo.

I'm starting mine right now, hopefully post screens later today :)

The Detail-A-Hallway results should be up soon. Who'all enterend besides Srry anyhow?--which was a superb entry for those who have not seen it.

THANKS, YOU BITCH! :P

2 days, 3 hours... left in compo 3, so feel free to discuss and choose the next one.

Like Rotor said, if any of you won't be mapping for this compo, volunteer to judge for it! The only stipulation is that the results must be posted within a day of the end of the compo, and should be sooner if possible.

Good Luck to all the Statue makers!

Hopefully, I'll get a couple 2-3 updates before the end :P.

This HEV/headless Gordon is life size--as you can see by the cycler and suit model--, but I'd like to the final about 1 1/2 times bigger, to allow for some better small detail.

Indeed Srry! That looks beautiful... and scary ! ^_^

Dauby: Thanks! That means a lot <tear, tears>.

Should be noted most of that detail would look like ass without HLFix ;) We might post a simple tutorial for it, since it would be difficult to compete/win one of these without it.

7 hours left in Minicompo #3, so get your entries in! Alexb911 will be judging this one.

If nobody comes up with an idea for Mini#4, I'll think of something and post it within the next couple of hours.

build a lego thing
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-24 13:45:08 UTC Post #191450
Sounds interesting! If you prefab the blocks we can use, and post some simple rules, the next compo is yours Gargy, if you want it.

You kinda have to do it soon though... I'm leaving in an hour or too, and I want to get the brief page up before I go.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-24 14:15:42 UTC Post #191469
I really like the LEGO idea... build a castle or a bridge  !

Just to build on that idea: i dont think custom textures should be allowed: keep it as close to a real lego piece as possible: red green blue and yellow. And if we were to prefab the pieces, they probably shouldnt all be the same shape: different shapes in every color.

An other idea is someone could take a photo of a real-life thing and everyone recreates that with their own details, like the current Source compo. That may take too long though.

Well, we could just copy the white one, rename it, and assign it the green textlight...should do the trick.

Ideas for rules?
