I've started off with this:

So much on so little:

I'm using more than 12 wad files, the sidewalks are 32 units wide and all textures have been scaled down to .25. I'm also planning to have both an urban and rural area for this city(both a business and residential area) I've yet to add traffic lights, fire hydrants, finish the parking garage, and a crapload of other things before I start on more buildings. Bring on the opposing cities, bitches. Skyscrapers for the WIN.

I'm not even entering anymore, for two reasons.

Reason 1: WCD will whoop all our asses.

Reason 2: I hate everything about my current city.

I hope I'll like the other minicompos better.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-11 06:25:24 UTC Post #189671
You'll never enter a compo with that attitude. Just post a city, doesn't matter if you like it or not. I did the same once and I won.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-11 06:40:00 UTC Post #189673
There's little chance I could finish the city by the time the compo is over, as I have about 1/10 of it complete. I don't even have a clear grasp of what I want it to look like, and I'm not compelled to continue working on it.

Sorry, but this is just one of those things I lost interest in rather quickly.

Elon gives good advice.

Just do as much as you can, and submit it as "unfinished" if you have to.

Please, think of the children :tears:

I liked the improve a room compo better. This one is too long term.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-11 13:23:30 UTC Post #189705
I really don't want to be posting my progress on this, but I just had to post this because its so funny to run around a little city.

Freakin' splitting on the building. Bah.

Jeez WCD, that looks great!

VOX: I agree that the term is a little too long, but it's so much fun/different, it's well worth it imo.

I hope we make the term for the next one really short. Speaking of which, are we having the winner of this compo choose the next compo to follow tradition, or are we doing Muzzie's next?

No, let me think of one!
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-12 06:54:16 UTC Post #189776
My entry is still very slow going, but this is definitely lots of fun :)

It's not exactly a city, but I suppose a small urban college campus qualifies to some extent:

Captain P: Maybe we can incorporate this with the countdown timer :P

No I mean the mapping is too much effort and the purpose isn't right. Look at the title
Advanced Brushwork MiniCompos
this isn't advanced brushwork at all! The next compo had better be the improve a room one. With one week to map.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-12 11:44:46 UTC Post #189802
Depends on what you call 'advanced' of course - this compo is quite tiny-brush heavy. Plus, you can decide the size of your city part yourself, a larger map isn't necessarily a better one. Well, perhaps I shouldn't have emphasized the custom content usage so much (especially models).
But, you can't please everyone, so yeah, better luck next compo. :)

Looks nice, WCD and rowley. :)

Here's a video of yours truly taking a gentle strawl trough GT_LVC(Gran Turismo Little van City(Little Vansterdam, i believe its Vancouver from what the creator told me). The driving was horrible and way to slow, also fraps clipped the screen but that was my error.

Hope ya'll like it, gotta love this map, so much more to explorer, i only showed a small part of the map in this video.

so this was already made before the compo?

But does it still stick to the 32 units-per-floor rule? Otherwise, I don't think you'd be able to enter it...

this isn't advanced brushwork at all!
You can incorporate advanced brushing in any map you make, but I think I see what you mean. Besides, this is definitely a great exercise, going about mapping in an entirely different way--no interiors, smaller scale, etc.

I was envisioning more of a fancy prop or prefab contest, but, I'm sure we can do those too, and with shorter terms--maybe 4 days or something.

Votes on how we'll decide the next compo?

1. Let the winner decide.
2. Just let someone new host/choose the compo each time.
3. Go with the best, new idea, regardless.

Pepper: that looks cool as hell... is the scale similar to ours in that game?

Unby: I remember those screenies... really cool!

Yup. It's 8:04pm EST now, and there's a little less than 24 hours left, so...

Wow, I'm looking at this and I'm envious! I only map for source, and i want to partisipate in it, but i havent got hl1, and even if i did, time's almost up... Do you suppose any1 could host somthing like this for source?

I find this so enthralling because I'm still somewhat... n00bish to maping, and mini compos would be a great way to learn more and compare what i learn to others' work! I really dont want to work on one giant map that takes months to produce when i could be making several works with different goals in mind for each one and learning different techniques each time.

Dont get me wrong, compos like these can be equally challenging as the major ones, but in equal time, you can cover so many more!

The major compos like the source one going on now are still above my head and take to long (in my opinion) to get much satisfaction out of doing them, so somthing like this in the source forum would be great!

Happy mapping and gool luck to all the mappers competing!
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-13 22:05:32 UTC Post #190001
I don't mean to burst your bubble but these are generally harder. Because we are dealing with advanced brushwork you might not be able to keep up with it. And you only have about a week so you have to already know how to do everything, no learning involved, and fast too.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-13 22:06:48 UTC Post #190002
oadjladjflka 21 hours left :(

I still have to make a school and hotel and... a grocery store.. but the whole city is surrounded by walls! Under my control :)..

pfft.. im still learning :)
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-13 22:08:02 UTC Post #190003
that doesnt mean i cant try:

i dont have hl1 and it's too late to start the major compo, so y not give it a shot? Regardless of MY skill level, i am sure many other source mappers would have fun taking part

The learning doesnt just happen by asking in the forums during the alloted time, it happens after, viewing eachother's work and techniques and chatting about it. of course, i may not learn actual mapping techniques like how to 'make this brush perform this function', but how to make the level more fun/realistic.

oh no... I was just saying I had cliped a few things here and there and if i were to enclose the map in It would have some hinderance.. well just very cumbersome.. hmm..
Apparently I've made a hl2 feel in this map.. like City 17. :) Combine Soldiers ftw!
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-14 02:12:35 UTC Post #190023
Nice enthusiasm :D but you do know this is for hl1 so your efforts are for nothing.
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-14 04:44:24 UTC Post #190042
Rowley, I'd say we simply vote for the best idea. I think that allows the most popular compo's.

The idea behind my original map, and therefor the example map that sort of started this compo, is my interest in RTS game development. By creating such a map, I aimed to get a better understanding of (urban) RTS environments. I'm creating some unit models now and then too, just to get a feeling for it. I think it's quite a challenging thing, such level-design, since most RTS'es use a heightmap and depend on models for the rest of it. Quite a different method. Combining both modelling and level-design into one package sounds more interesting the more I think about this. :)

definately, just look at games like battlefield series and farcry. They use the same technique.

Advanced brushwork? We're making miniature cities. There's nothing advanced about that. :

Then what's your definition of 'advanced brushwork', Ubreakable?

I don't say this is advanced or so, however, nobody's stopping you from doing advanced stuff in a miniature city. :)

This is my entry. I've also PMed it to you, Captain P.
I really wish that I could have added the residential area that I had planned on having from the start but I didn't have enough time(curse the clock!), so I just finished it off as [another] purely downtown area.

Would any source mappers be interested in doing something like this if the next compo turns out to be for HL1?

Oh, and n00b #2, your download keeps stopping in the middle. Not sure if the problem has to do with your hosting or my internet connection. Just thought I'd point it out.
