Google is announcing a new browser designed completely from scratch by Google today.

No download link is available at this time yet, but here is a "comic book" briefing the various features of this revolutionary browser.

We'll have to wait to see just how revolutionary it is.

I see it's out now. I'll stick to Firefox as it's been a favourite for some time. Tell me how it is though!

wow a new browser i'll have to go home and crap myself.

So the Google toolbar has morphed into a whole (probably) shitty browser... can't wait to see how bad it is. (actually will probably end up being the coolest thing ever)

I can imagine the screaming web designers already.

I'm sure it will be fine, but its probably still a bit annoying to make sure it works reguardless.

I just tried it - it starts up in about half a second! less even. one gripe i have about firefox is that when you start up, loading firefox takes a while. but dear god, it loaded up even quicker than IE, and IE is integrated into the operating system!

i recommend everyone read this: http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/index.html (edit: sorry, i just realised satch linked it already)

i've been testing it, and some of the features really are something else. sure, it still has a few rendering issues (input boxes and buttons mostly) with TWHL, but apart from that, this is looking really good. with a few changes (mostly user-created extensions - web developer, firebug, etc equivalents) i could see myself using this browser over firefox.

I just read a report on Yahoo concerning this whole Chrome deal, and it's a real eye opener. According to what I got from the report, the fact that Google is releasing their own browser, could very well be a retaliatory response against a certain feature Microsoft added to the new Internet Explorer version 8. I am sure some of you have already heard in the media that some of the new features being added to Internet Explorer 8 include more tools for web surfers to cloak their online preferences, creating a shield that could make it more difficult for Google and other marketing networks to figure out which ads are most likely to appeal to which individuals. This is very bad for Google's business model, since Internet Explorer is used by about 75 percent of web surfers. As far as I am concerned, this is just one more battle among the Titans for global, web domination.

I highly recommend you all read the full Yahoo story on this: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080902/ap_on_hi_te/google_browser;_ylt=AkmFC5mXVMDeFj0jVz4W2Yqs0NUE

Looking into it now. The "task manager" feature alone makes it pretty appealing to me.
Not really feeling the download manager, though.
Posted 15 years ago2008-09-02 19:03:27 UTC Post #254909
Google has been working on the browser for more than two years. So I don't think it's just a knee-jerk reaction to Microsoft's IE 8.

Chrome
Ooo Shiny.

I like the simplicity of the interface, in addition to its ultra speed in loading! The task manager is also nice.

Perhaps a change from Firefox is in order? Ill wait until it comes out of beta, and see what kind of plug-ins they might offer. In particular, a better download manager, as world crafter mentioned.

And just a side not, Tito, don't take this personally, but i hate your outlook on the internet, and i cant stand reading your posts like the one above, or the ones in that "browser debate", they just irritate me.

Forum search is useless, and takes long to load. Needs improvement.

I tried to dig up my old mod thread, so i typed in the actual name for the thread, and still had to go through 10 pages before i found it.

But indeed! Google chrome is mega fast.

Just gave it a try, it really is fast, and simple, the way I like it. However, it's buggy at some sites I visit (like citromail.hu), but I guess that's why it's still beta.

I like it, but it don't think i'll move to chrome, at least for now.
Posted 15 years ago2008-09-03 08:30:01 UTC Post #254927
I'm pretty much interested in whether I will have to do testing in yet another browser now. Probably not, since the rendering engine is Webkit, shared by many browsers. As an initiative, not really sure what to think about it. Does the market really need another browser? We've already got 3 major players competing (being Mozilla, Microsoft and Apple (sorry opera users, your market share is like 0.1%)) for the user base. We'll see.

As for a real alternative to Firefox, it really isn't and probably won't be, at least for me. There's a tonne of plugins I use constantly for Firefox that will at least not be available for Chrome for a while.
Posted 15 years ago2008-09-03 09:59:05 UTC Post #254929
The plugins are the main reason I'm using Firefox.
I find Adblock, English dictionary, HTML Validator and Fast Video Download extremely useful.

Firefox is the playstation 3 - very powerful in the right hands, full of stolen technology, relies on its community for support but very solidly built and functional.

Opera is the 360. Functional, nifty and well designed, offering the greatest ammount of choice, catering to all types of users despite occasional spectacularly terrible crashes.

IE7 is the Gamecube. I mean really. that's not even an update.

Chrome is the Wii. Never going to be taken seriously, but everyone will sneak a shot when nobody is looking. :3

That's a very interesting way of putting things, The Hunter. Now, as for the Wii not being taken seriously, I am assuming you are talking about the so called "hard core gamers", right? Because with a proper research done, you will see that the Wii's installed base is bigger than the PS3's or Xbox360's combined. And as for IE7 not being an update, you might be right in some respects. Of course, that will change with the imminent full release of IE8, which is the real reason Google rushed Chrome's launch, it's not my word, look it up.
Posted 15 years ago2008-09-03 13:55:34 UTC Post #254940
the Wii also has a sense of humour. So do google. Read the main incognito page.
Going incognito doesn't affect the behaviour of other people, servers or software. Be wary of:
Websites that collect or share information about you
Internet service providers or employers that track the pages that you visit
Malicious software that tracks your keystrokes in exchange for free smileys
Surveillance by secret agents
People standing behind you

By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services.
And this is in the EULA of a browser.

And as for the Hunter, be quiet.

elof, if you haven't already, click the link again and read the update. looks like google just reused another EULA from a different app, and they are fixing it by removing the parts that don't apply (like the sentence above)
edit: apparently it's already been fixed. now it says:
You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services.

...but I can install Chrome, which is much better than IE, even at the beta stage.

I never did say that IE does not cut corners, in fact, all browsers do in some degree. It's just some do more than others. Of course, saying which one sucks more is like saying who is the most beautiful woman in the world, it's really in the eye of the beholder, it all comes down do whatever works for you personally. Man, I am getting a bad feeling for where this thread is already going.......

I can't be bothered trying Chrome, I'm happy with IE7. I also have FF, but I hardly seem to use it. I'm not saying IE7 is the best browser, i'm sure it has a lot of shortcomings but matter of fact is that I simply don't notice them. (..I can already see the 'OMG what a dumbshit you are... how can you not notice them? comments) I hardly have troubles with IE7 and i'm using it for so long i'm kinda used to the interface of the browser, whenever I use FF I just don't feel comfertable. The fact you have to download quite a bunch of add-ons to FF doesn't attract me aswell. I simply use it to access sites I can't acces in IE7.

Now lets get back on topic and lets not bash IE users for once.

FresheD, those are the reasons I use Opera.
It's customisable to a crazy extent. It has IE-mimic skins and everything.
AND everything you need comes with it.

I expect most firefox users would convert if they gave Opera a fair chance and weren't getting shafted by their own pride.

You don't have to download any plugins.
FireFox without plugins works a lot better than IE.
Plugins just makes it even better.
Posted 15 years ago2008-09-07 14:24:25 UTC Post #255034
He's saying that for FF to be as versatile as Opera, you have to download a bunch of plugins. But since Opera can do all that from the get go, its just an inconvinience to find them for FF.
