All right here's the deal. As far as I know, every TWHL server in the past has been dedicated, and therefore prone to many problems. We've never had a real "server".

I am willing to start an 8, 10, or 12 player HLDM or HL2DM server, hosted by Nuclear Fallout. I co-owned a server with some friends for almost 5 years, and I will say that Nuclear Fallout's service is fantastic.
At minimum, I'd like said server to be ours for 12 months. That's right, we'll have a strong, reliable server for a full year at least. Now, we can go 6 months, but I'd really like to take the full year.

This is the list of server location options: https://www.nfoservers.com/networklocations.php
Pick the location that your best ping is in, and that will determine where we host. Unfortunately for some of you, it has to be hosted in the US.
Now here's what I need from you: donations to get things kicked off, of course. There will be one big payment in the beginning for the entire 12 months (15% discount for paying at once). I will pay 25% of the cost each year (if we go more than a year in the future), and will ask the rest of TWHL to pay the rest. Every bit helps!
Donations will be through Paypal. I will set up a new Paypal account for specifically for paying Nuclear Fallout for our server. To donate, you will simply send money [won't matter what currency] to TWHL's Paypal account. You won't even need a Paypal account to donate, if you don't have one.
I'll post the total amount of USD in the account when new donations come in so that we don't overdonate(probably won't be a problem, if you know what I mean)
*This account will not be used for any kind of personal expenses; only for paying for a TWHL server.

Here's the options I liked best...
-8 player HLDM = 203.90 USD (I pay $51.90, TWHL pays $152.00, average of 6.08USD assuming 25 donations)
-10 player HLDM = 254.90 USD (I pay $64.90, TWHL pays $190.00, 7.60USD average)
-12 player HLDM = 305.90 USD (I pay $76.90, TWHL pays $229.00, 9.16USD average)
-8 player HL2DM = 302.84 USD (I pay 75.84, TWHL pays $227, 9.08USD average)
-10 player HL2DM = 378.52 USD (I pay $93.52, TWHL pays 285, 11.40 average)
...but if you'd like to suggest something else, click here and suggest your own server setup. All the prices above are based on an interNAP server.

Because there was nowhere else to put this: I have a personal ftp that I used to host server files for my old CS server. I will use this same ftp for the TWHL server. This means we will get "fast downloads" and hosting custom maps will be no problem.
Edit: Here's a donation button-

I'd seriously recommend holding onto your cash until you know for sure that enough will be donated to pay for the server. Even $152 is a crapload of money to expect from a website full of 15-year-olds and broke college students. Your dedication is commendable though.

Should have posted this earlier before Reafer ninja'd me.
Gamerservers.com rents out server for much cheaper than Nuclear Fallout, but they don't host older games, and I have no experience with them. At face value, we can get a 12 player HL2DM server for $152.49.

Honestly, I'd probably have to say worse. Source has a weird way of coping with lag. It causes lots of "twitching", and it's noticable at around 150 and up for me.

Also, I'm not going to trust gameservers.com. I've read some bad things about their reliability and server power after looking into them.

You wouldn't shell out 8 bucks for a year's worth of server uptime? Come on, people :|
Posted 14 years ago2009-07-07 03:53:54 UTC Post #269563
Don't really play HLDM or HL2DM, and the latency would be ridiculous here. I think you'll find there are plenty of reasons people won't want to shell money out for a server.

The problem is with having site servers you need to cover everything, or nothing. Having one official server suited to one country only is somewhat unfair on the rest of the community.

I know I'd never put my own thinly-stretched money towards an Australian server, to the best of my knowledge there's less than 10 'regular' aussies here.

HLDM or HL2DM doesn't matter to me. I don't have any maps made for either that are worth playing.

Even if the server lags a bit, we can still get quality play-testing and troubleshooting in with our maps.

Is the lag better or worse for Source when connecting from the other side of the world?
Yeah. Source is the bitch !

Well, a server would be great in Europe( not for my advantage !!!) because it's kinda ... a "middle point" between most of us twhlers...

America is good too. But think of penguin boy and other guys from there, If I have a 6 mb/s connection and the best ping on a gmod server ( which is a damn laggy game even on the simplest maps) was around 200 ( meaning a hl2dm would be around 100 for me) , what about them ? 800 ping ? Sucks !

I don't think we should discuss about having a hl2dm or hldm server because nobody from here has a Pentium3 anymore ( actualy using it). HL2Dm has problem with physiscs calculations, but hldm on the other side is badly optimised with the visleafs and causes lots of lag on bigger maps.
Source is also more dynamic, hl is from 98' for God sake. I normally play UT3 now when it comes to a true deathmatch, not very often hl2dm ( but it's fun to play) and hldm ... only played when was daubster's server open.

And mapping ! Source mapping is easier( the "detail" part, but anyway you won't use lot's of I/O in a multiplayer map , therefore less entities for effects :P ) and is much more faster. And you can map on Ati Radeons too ^^

Anyway, I can't vote, I'm 50%-%0% . I would donate( oh shitty words) but I'm low on money, and don't fucking know how to link my paypal account to the debit card. It says it needs I don't know what verification code ....

Back, finally.
Thanks for the donations!!

Here's the plan: Going against what I said earlier (I know), I'm going to get a 9 player, 6 month server. I still plan on owning this thing for a full year, but 6 months at a time gives more room for changes than all at once (and it only saves $4).
That will run an initial $118.95. I'll pay the $51.95 that I would have payed for an 8 player, 12 month server. This means that I only need $67 from the community. We're already at $25, thanks to Atom and Tetsu0 :)

I we'll save money by doing a low player count for six months. If 9 players tusn out to be too little, we can raise the player count for the next 6 months and save money. Or if it turns out to be too many, then we only pay for 6 months of too many players, and lower it to 8 for the next 6 months.

Goal: $118.95
Current donations: $76.95

I'm sending another PM to Reafer to fix the donation link. Unfortantely, I have to go with the second form I posted instead of a straightforward donation form.

Also: AMXX will be installed on this server. Should go without saying, but I'm saying anyway.

8 players was $104. 10 players was $131.
If you guys insist on 8 then we can run with it. I just feel that 9 players had the most reasonable price for the slots.
Posted 14 years ago2009-07-08 01:19:26 UTC Post #269655
I will be amazed if we ever get more than eight players on this server at once. I think once there might have been around five people when I was on the old server. There will probably be a surge of server activity at launch, and then a drastic decline, unless we hold scheduled events or something. TWHL's userbase is spread so far across the world, people will be playing at totally different times.

We've actually had 4 "real" servers so far.

There was a CS:S one paid for by yours truly,
a TF2 one paid for by Daubster,
a HLDM one paid for by Muzz/Mighty Atom
and at one point we had a HL2DM one as well, which i think was also Muzzeh.

From experience, it's just not worth paying for them. None of our servers had enough activity to justify the price we paid.

only just saw the thread.

However, if you are in fact only $20 from the goal, i suppose i could chip in :3
I suppose it would provoke more activity knowing that our own money was invested in it. The community won't want it to go to waste.

My mistake was to buy the ?120 server out of my own pocket.

I am neither a 15 year old, nor am I a broke college student. However, as much as it pains me to say I cannot spare a penny for this server.

I've been playing a lot of HLDM this week but every single bloody server runs CrossFire 24/7.

I'd like a server up and running again. I always enjoyed the little HLDM games when they got going. Besides it'll give me chance to use these awesome custom models again.

Generous enough to bring us to our goal

So now I can pay for it, but I still don't know where you guys want me to host. I've only heard from people from the US, and I need some of you in the UK and Australia to speak up. If at all possible, I'd like to have a location where you can stay under 150.

Just say where your ping is best, even if it's not that low.
If nobody speaks up, I'd like to go with San Jose, California because it's pretty much dead between Australia and the UK.

As soon as the location has been chosen, I can pay and get the server up and running.
