I think valve just forced everyone to use the HD pack for half life. Which is kinda dumb. The HD models have not all the animations that the original has, which will break alot of mods. I dont get why they suddenly decide to do this all of a sudden when anyone could just easily download the HD pack from steam, but now EVERYONE is FORCED to use it. what the f

Not to mention that the HD models lack some of the character and texture quality the original models have.

I dunno if this will work, but unless they replaced the models in the GCF directly, perhaps this link will do the trick?

Did anyone try and see if the "Use HD models" or whatever its called, in the otpions menu works... just a thought, haven't looked at it myself yet.

I like the HD models, personally. What's stopping you from copying over the relevant files from a WON install over the top of the steam files?

Why would they randomly decide to do something like this 14 years on?

They are porting Half-Life to Linux and Mac so they are probably using hd stuff to appeal to new users (I damned hope it is temporarily!). I do not like the hd stuff a lot because of minor things.

Reasons I don't like the HD Pack
1) It's not really that big a jump in fidelity, polygon wise or texture resolution wise
2) Only animations that were used are present. Valve probably left the animations in the original models for a reason. Like because they were distributing an SDK.
3) The weapons are changed. I don't mind giving the SPAS-12 a stock, but the beretta and M4 are changing things just a bit much, eh? Also, the crowbar is way too thick.
4) No character. The low texture resolution and polygon count meant Valve's modelers had to get creative to do details. This lead to instantly recognizable characters with a lot of artistic detail, much of which was then lost when Gearbox remade them.
5) [NEW!] It's mandatory.

I also dislike the HD models, so I was about to get annoyed and then I actually checked. I've still got the old models, does this update when you restart Steam or something?

Suddenly, everybody plays a lot of Half-Life again.

[EDIT] Ok just checked to see and I really can't understand how you guys are being bothered by these models. They don't look that "HD" anyway, it's an old game. You probably have small monitors...
BUT: What is this shit?! Monsters and soldiers fade-out when I kill them?!!

Don't worry, this stupid "steam" monopolis shithole is not gonna last forever anyway, just use non-steam hl

fuck valve, i bet theres barely a single guy left who worked on original hl

Personally I always hate any kind of addons valve added later. They are ruined original's, that old bastard freeman hands and rusty weapons lol I like them..
look what they did for early halflife beta, its kind a different game, different models player stuff, movement, animations, etc..

Monsters and soldiers fade-out when I kill them?!!
Check to see if the parental/content controls are on. Though even if they are, that should only happen when they get gibbed.

Except, you know, most of the guys who did.
Not that many people leave Valve, and I expect over half the original team is still there.

And Viktor Antonov, but he wasn't a member of Valve when HL1 was being developed.

Does this also apply for Half-Life: Source?

Ross Scott has been dealing with the issue of people wanting him to use HD models in Freeman's Mind, but he said the sudden transition to the regular to HD models would be really weird in the series, so he chose not to do it.

Nope, it doesn't apply to HL:S.

Yea I had to redo some of the scripted sequences in my mod because the animations were missing in the HD ones - sucks too because the original animations really fit the sequences I had going

you could just manually include the old models in ur pak0.pak !

Anyway seems most of u all agree that losing the old stuff is bad but from Valve's track record regarding source etc. We all can expect them to no longer consider the modders when they do their updates.

Back when developers were simple, games were simple, etc. etc. and then everything became the world of corporate empires demanding complete control... Someone should do a documentary on this

I don't know if Valve gave us the models which were lacking animations but recently I took a look at some of the models and they have all the animations they should have. I guess they recently replaced the bad stuff with the good stuff.

EDIT: Well, nevermind. There are missing animations.

UPDATE: Valve added an activate/deactivate HD pack option in the video tab.
Posted 11 years ago2013-02-01 23:50:38 UTC Post #312426
The fact that they added HD first and the option to toggle it later would suggest that they were under some kind of time pressure, which makes no sense it's their own game and is being published on their own platform...

But as we all know, rushing has been the downfall of many games ever since atari and whatnot. Wonder what's becoming of valve.

i read the entire thread. not only is there no satisfactory solution presented, there is a link that has a valve employee's response to these complaints, and it reeked of apathy. the employee said something like "we'll consider giving you the option to disable it" or somehing like that. i am NOT happy with this. the fact that this was essentially a Silent update means that valve anticipated a negative response and decided to force it thru anyway. the solution is ridiculous. you have to opt into a steampipe beta, then uninstall and reinstall half life. even then, some ppl in the thread mention that this steampipe thing negatively affects the game performance. I suppose valve learned a good deal about public relations from their partners (EA) you know

Mine's got the HD pack, but then I think I already had it on there.

Frankly I don't see what the fuss is about. Except the missing animations, I can see how that might cause an issue.
