god I wish I had a working computer I'd organize one of my maps... Its the one whereas the shadows being cast are aligned with the sun, and I also got alot of sun beams (Whenever you look up at the sun, sometimes you can see the circles and beams from the brightness)
so that way when you look at the sun its pretty bright, I set up 24 of them in this one map whereas where ever you walk it gets triggered on and then off then another on, that way it doesn't mater where your at, you look at the sun and its bright, very realistic, when I last was finishing it I was using the same concept of making a rainbow in a waterfall... It is still my favorite peice of work for realism.

You do realise that this is a very "inspired" compo idea for experienced mappers. It's a great chance to display just how skilled they are.

Personally, I would've liked a more free aproach instead of recreating a photograph, like taking a photograph as your piece of concept art or something. But hey, I think I've found a suitable picture now...

Wich basically means I am busy...
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-21 10:52:19 UTC Post #68130
Yeah, having to show what you made is a bit lame, will the entries be judged on how much they resemble the photograph, or penalised for straying from it?
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-21 12:30:20 UTC Post #68153
thanks peace and love, my barney works now and i can shoot him :D

Yeah, that problem tripped me out for a while, glad my struggles could help ya out =)

like taking a photograph as your piece of concept art or something
Uh, that's allowed farziknow? Why wouldn't it be - it's still a photo.

Try to stay as close as you can to the reference pic, if you can. I'm sure you won't get penalized too much for straying away from the reference pic, but don't just get the base architecture and start piling in stuff that's not in the pic.

Try and do what you want, but the map should still be easily recognisable from the pic.

And how could a map in space show skill? All it would be would be a map inside a giant skybox, and each map would be too similar. Surely that can't be any good.

Good to see you are busy mapping, Captain P. I'm sure you are more busy doing other things, but hey, who cares. If you don't get it finished, you had nothing to lose in the first place.

That should be peoples thoughts: "I might as well enter, I've got nothing to lose." Except maybe a bit of reputation. But you never know really. :)

Finally, any chance of getting a "Go here for more information" on the actual compo page?

People seem to be full of questions that have been answered in this thread, but some people don't use the forums or don't look in the "Site Comments / Suggestions" part.

Just wonderin'.........

I know I'll have to stay close to the original picture and that's what I'm doing right now. I just would've liked it different but hey, this is good too. I guess that's more for another type of compo... the next one perhaps.

And thanks trapt. I'll see what I can do to keep up my reputation... ;)
In fact, I'm combining two photographs. Both should be very recognizable and fitting together. We'll see...
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-22 08:01:57 UTC Post #68284
Surely its safe to say that as long as your map in some way resembles a photographic reference, anything goes? I don't see why there need to be so many questions....IMAGINATION PEOPLE!

There's no point saying whether or not I'm entering. You know and I know I'm not to good with the 'completed things' aspect of mapping. Or life in general to be perfectly honest. We'll see....

bah, the worst thing about creating textures is that it takes ages to draw them. but its better then filter-textures :)
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-23 14:00:22 UTC Post #68603
Does it have to be just one .bsp, or can you have a level change?

You can have as many bsps as you want in one entry....

If you want I can host your map.
Well, I'm hoping that my website designer for my Wall mod will wake up before then and get the site online, in which case I can host it there. I may also be able to host it at www.egir.dk. If worst comes to worst, I'll give it to you to host, but I doubt it will be neccessary.

Can I use a photo from a TV show? If you think about it, it IS real world, because it was done on a real film set. Wait! Now THAT'S an idea!
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-24 14:45:55 UTC Post #68876
Hmm, let's see...
I'll try pulling something off for this compo if I bother reinstalling my system. See, I tried installing gtkradiant but I needed some new graphics libraries. So, I went downloading them and at some point messed up the whole thing. Now I can't even run Half-Life on Wine :

I have a question:

Say I have a picture of a building, but the picture only shows one side. If I do make the whole thing, it wont fit hammer. I already did one portion of it and it compiles fine.
Do I have to make the whole building or just the ones shown in the picture (one side, the platform, etc)???
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-25 21:34:22 UTC Post #69372
Well if you make the rest of the building so you can't get to it or see it then I guess you wouldn't have to make it all.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-25 22:11:24 UTC Post #69375
its like this(i hope this posts right)

the picture only sees:
_________
|
|
|
|
_____________ |

actual building is:
______________
| |
| |
| |
| |
_____________ | |_________

but i only made this:
_________
|
|
|
|
_____________ |

It works and plays fine and shows what the pic can see and the area where the picture was taken. I just wanna know how the compo will be judged.....
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-25 22:12:34 UTC Post #69376
oh dang that is so wrong......... anyway ill just send links to my pic and map later......
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-25 22:20:39 UTC Post #69377
The only thing required is to map a reference pic. Therefore, if the refpic doesn't show the entire pic, then you wouldn't have to map it.

It'd be a good idea, though, half of a building kinda ruins the feel :P

As for what I'm mapping...

http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=22064

The Administration Building.
if the refpic doesn't show the entire pic
Er, doesn't show the entire building.

The powerplant may become super complicated. This one isn't so complex, yet still powerful if done right.
