I've been spending my days playing "Far Cry" lately, and it's a lovely game.

Don't give me wrong, HL2 is still the best game ever, but I just wish that HL2 combines can have the AI of Far Cry mercs. Those mercs in Far Cry are scarily smart sometimes, and it really makes the gameplay more challenging and fun.

But the ambience of Far Cry still looks somewhat cartoonish compared to HL2. No other game has the cinematic feel of HL2, especially the outside environment (i.e. the Water Hazard section).

Wouldn't it be nice for a FPS game to have the best of both worlds? Perhaps Valve should take a hint and spend more research in improving their AI?

Valve are lazy old men with senile dementure, that's way out of their reach!

Well, if those lazy old men made HL2, they're still pretty cool old men by my standard.

I figure if I set low standard for everyone else, I'll never be disappointed. Of course, there are always some who surprise me every now and then. They're even dumber than my already low expectation.

I set high standard for myself, and I always try to improve.

Stfu you crazy finnish bastard :P

I agree with Satch. They really should improve the AI in HL2. they said it would be awesome and the enemies would use the environment and so on. But if you put a box in a dorrway and guards come, they just stand there...

"ZOMG!!!1 A box! What the hell do we do?!"

Nah, some bits of it were beautiful, like the end of the way out in Water Hazard (where one fights the Combine gunship).

Beautiful, yes. But the AI wasn't very smart there either.

I made a little test level yesterday just for the fun of it and to test the AI.

When I placed combine in the level they started to run around shooting at me. The only thing is, they don't dodge that much and stand there taking bullets from your gun.

I never tried this but in the E3 video, the player pushed a table in front of a door and the combine couldn't go in so they shot through the windows and eventually knocked the door down. That made me wanna buy HL2 so much but after finishing it I wondered where all the cool stuff had gone and why the AI didn't seem that good.

Valve is nothing more than a bunch of chimps that "write" software.

Take Splinter Cell 3 for example. The Ai is the most important bit in the game. They can climb ladders, press switches etc....

Played a bit o' Far Cry today. Don't play it much. Only up to the 3rd chapter thing (starts with the inflatable boat drive thing) and so far its the best part of the game. I really love Far Cry's outdoor AI, but indoor can suck my balls.

Worst part of Far Cry = Voice Acting. It's like a really, really corny action movie. :P

FarCry is severly underrated, it is at least as good, if not better, as Half-life2.

Wow HrnyGoat, for someone whos maps look like utter shit you certainly have a keen insight into a company that has released the greatest FPS of all time.

The best is yet to come. I haven't gotten that far either, but I am somewhat farther than you. Just play it a bit longer, and you'll get to fly on a glider. That was a spectacular experience.

And using the sniper rifle with extremely long range? That makes me feel alive!

Dude that was totally uncalled for.
Your one map wasn't exactly beautiful.

I agree. Far Cry is very underrated. IMHO, it's a great game that deserves more respect. The AI is amazing, I dare someone to play in Veteran mode. That's what you call good AI. HL1 and 2's AI is pretty average. Notice in HL1 how npc's can't shoot and run at the same time?!

Played a bit more Far Cry today. I'm up to the part where you have to blow up the armory. I'm not sure how I should go about it though. Stealth or 1337 rushage? :P

The hang-glider was good, but it was a short trip. :(

I have new-found respect for the Far Cry AI after playing today. It is VERY good, and that's in 'normal' difficulty mode. :P

For the armory, I used stealth. I prefer this style because I try to imagine myself as the player in a realistic situation. In real life, I don't like to get hit by bullets, so I typically go through the entire level without getting hit once.

I hid in the jungle surrounding the armory, and I used my sniper rifle to snuff out all the snipers in the towers. Then I used the binocular to spot each one of the mercs and kill them one by one, moving slowly around the perimeter, camouflaging in the bushes.

They die without even knowing what hit them!

sorry if i'm asking in the wrong place, but is my comp 2 l@m3 for this AWESOME game? here are the specs: athlon(tm) XP 2600 XP (1,92ghz), geforce 5200 fx ultra 128 mb and 512 MB ram. could i play this game on 800x600 without hiccups?
Posted 19 years ago2005-04-07 13:41:44 UTC Post #102280
Nah, this seems like a good place to ask.

And yes, you could play this game probably without hiccups if you down the resolutions and detail factors.

Yea, you should be able to, without hiccups as you call it..lol :P

Why is your 2600 clocked at 1.92GHz? My 2400 has a stock speed of 2.0GHz, and mine's at 2.32GHz now, putting it above, as far as I know, any of the rest of the XP range.

I had problem playing it with my old computer that only had 512 MB of RAM. It would go well most of the times, but when there is a helicopter above, the framerates wuold drop like crazy.

By the way, I am at the bunker now. It feels a lot like Quake II or the original Doom.

It plays fairly well on my machine, so I dare say it'd work on yours. I can play at 800x600 with medium settings (which has the good water effects too) with a decent frame rate.

Btw, my machine sucks. It's a Pentium 4 1.8 GHz, 256 MB RAM, with a 128MB Radeon 9200 SE. It should run fine on your computer. :P

I'm intrigued...downloading the demo now.

I always used to see the box--the guy submerged in water with the mp5 who looks like Alec Baldwin--but I always assumed it was a cheap piece o' crap. Shame on me... :P

Heh, I've never played the demo.

Also, Far Cry Multiplayer sucks. Really bad.

I stoppepd palying fc in level 11, it got quiet boring. And the AI was acting stupid, one of those very bad looking mercs :P kept shooting rockets at the try i was hiding behind, and at that point i wasnt even behind the tree anymore ;) .

Mine runs at 1024x786 or whatever the reolution is, and with most on medium and few on high without any hiccups at all.
