I imagine most of Valve were in their mid 30s when they first made Half-Life, and almost 20 years have passed since it's release.

People are getting old, so I guess we'll be seeing more and more of this. The passage of time sucks!

Well, you should probably edit the title to be something like "Valve Retinal Scanner" so people don't mistake this for a clone of that one.

I like this example, great for new mappers :)
Well done 5/5 :)

Yeah i noticed that one but valve's are setup a bit different.
a scripted_sequence triggers after the animation is played. so if you just use the sequence to trigger the door, you won't get the scanning effect during the animation
This example shows how to do that

It looks pretty good right now but I would recommend more detail.

How could I possibly have made that any nicer sounding? I gave you legitimate criticism. Also I never claimed the mapping was low-quality in any way. Take a game like Quake or Quake 2 for example. The models fit their environments. The models you chose to have in your map are way too high quality for a Half-Life map in general, just saying. Lastly, I rated the map two stars to balance out the rating, it's bad practice and I apologize, but I just don't feel like this map is four stars quite yet.

Now now Mr. Smartass...
For an experienced player it is very easy to climb up in the backyard and that way also leads directly to the flag. The other 3 ways to the flag all end in one and the same room before you can get to the flag.
Have you thought about the fact that it might also be a good way to escape with the flag?

Generally the railings don't have climb brushes, just the huge gridfence and a part of the free-standing balcony, but thanks for letting me know that my ideas are not great, i never claimed that though.

Low quality mapping hm? haha!
whatever
The map works with the ctf servermod in hldm and most of all with ag where you can start ctf with ag's votesystem. Noone really plays op4
Criticism is totally legit, yours however looks like random bashing to me

I would be very pleased however if you could demonstrate your advanced gameflow in a 1on1 match.

Ran through the map and the flow isn't exactly that great in my opinion. The side area as it stands is kinda useless because you can't even get into the base from the side without doing some jumping tricks. (I just now read the description and realized that the railings have ladders.) Still, this isn't that great of an idea. It breaks flow. Also, why the brushwork van and the model vehicles? It doesn't look very good. I think the map would look better if it had lower poly models to match the quality of the rest of it. Lastly, why not make this map for Opposing Force? The CTF mode is built right into the game.

Thanks for the feedback :)

The development process wasn't as smooth as you might think, I remade several areas over and over again till everything was optimized and looked nice. Took me a year to make this on and off haha. But I'm glad I finally released it :)

Your map is a concentrated cocktail of good interior design - at least by CS:GO level design standards. Had I not downloaded this from TWHL I could have easily took this map as an included map in the game, that's how advanced your skills are imo. Well, it's true that you also got help from Deen, and team effort shows off. I have to say though that I've never been a fan of the plasticky feeling a lot of these modern source engine maps have, but I'm going to try to ignore that, seeing that nobody has anything against it.

About the gameplay: paradoxically I don't like that I get lost in this office complex as it's built like an anthill, but I like that because of this there's no real "camping" spot. Choke points are everywhere and that ensures action, even with few players( I played 5vs5 with bots).

How much effort did you put into this? The details are incredible, and I'm not literally referring to small details. I seriously question how do you get inspired to connect all these areas, to come up with the visuals and overall theme? It's a mixture of a lot of elements yet they come together just fine. I'd find very difficult to stay on track with such a map, so for that I'm giving 5 shiny stars! A map to be played on a TWHL server, whenever we'll get one :).

good read, but i'm not convinced to upgrade my crappy specs.

@Urby: It was very impressive hair. I can't stop thinking about it. My dreams recently have been very ...hairy.

@CapT: No booze, but I'm beginning to wonder if drinking a bit before upgrading PCs might not be a bad idea. My track record with upgrades hasn't ever been very good sober, so surely it can't hurt right? Flashing the BIOS was pretty easy, I just had to download the right file and put it on a USB stick, the BIOS software had a wizard thing that let me choose the file to use.

I also picked up an SSD and installed it yesterday and went with Windows 10 as well. My computer boots in 5 seconds instead of 5 minutes, it's pretty cool.

Good story of determination, and booze? :)

My semi-recent upgrade(nothing even close to as nice as yours), I got nothing on the first try because my power supply was shite, but after upgrading PSU all was fine.

This is why I buy things like this at best buy doe. If I fry it, I can just exchange for a new one within 30 days. So how do you go about flashing it, was it difficult?

@Striker: In my case it's an online store that has a physical location as well. You can get it delivered, but if you're close you can save yourself $10 and go over and pick it up yourself. The store is like a 5 min drive from work so it's easy to pick it up. Interesting to hear that talking about beefy parts makes you moist.

@Jessie: You don't know that dollarey-doos is the official name for Australian currency? That's un-Australian. And yep, it was from Umart! They're cheap and they don't mess about! Unless you want to return something!

I'm telling you, I don't sell computer parts in Australia! And I give better support than Valve.

Every hardware purchase I ever did was by walking into a store. Never once I bought hardware online.
Commented 8 years ago2016-01-29 15:02:27 UTC in journal: #8659 Comment #50160
Your story reminds me of a processor upgrade I had in 2010. You must have been really enthusiastic about the purchase and totally forgot about compatibility details. I know that the motherboard was from 2007 and on Gigabyte's page the processor I was going to buy was listed as compatible, but with a newer BIOS version. I risked flashing the BIOS, but it worked and I had a beefier PC.

I don't know why I'm picturing DiscoStu as having the afro from your story... probably because of his avatar.

Now I can't get my priorities straight! I don't know if I should continue to save money for a car or invest in a desktop and sell my laptop... although its Nvidia 650m still bears the weight of lots of modern games.

At this point I could invest in a system centered around Skylake i7 6700, with 16GB of DDR4. I'd have to wait probably 2-3 months before buying a graphics card - the intel 530 integrated graphics is powerful enough to run games with some decency in FullHD. Then I'd invest in this Asus GTX 970 Turbo OC. It's a piece of beauty, you don't see every day GPUs painted white. As a matter of fact, this card was on sale these days in some stores from my country. One could get it for about 300$. I wonder if I should wait until USB type-C becomes popular on motherboards though.

All these beefy hardware discussions makes my mouth really moist.

Also, you walked in the store to buy the GPU? I thought most of the people order them online. The only computer hardware I ever bought physically from a store was a hard disk...

This is all well and good, but you said "dollarey-doos" twice, which I believe is once more than is required for you to end up on some black list somewhere.
