Well at first I thought it was ultimately superior because I could see how the lighting looked without compiling. Later on I discovered it was more like a rough estimate and with UDK you do have to compile it.
I think it takes a little longer than Source to be honest but unlike Source you can play the game from within the editor which saves having to load it over and over like Source. I can safely say I don't miss buildcubemaps.
UDK uses lightmass which in turn uses a program called Swarm Agent. It's quite a beast and requires a decent PC for complex lighting. I had a scene with trees and Swarm Agent kept saying I was running out of memory. I have 4GB by the way.
Turns out lightmass was calculating all the gaps in the leaves and where the sun shines in comparison to that. So it's really powerful and thus requires a powerful machine. Overall though the process of building a level is somewhat faster since you can literally import a model with a few clicks. The material editor is so powerful that you can create insane textures from nothing but a single colour diffuse texture. Heck, you don't even need a texture since the material editor has a colour module.
In my scene you see a cup. Well apart from a normal map it uses a distortion shader, a cubemap and a colour module to add a hint of orange to the blue cubemap. So powerful...
But then you have to ask yourself, why do you use it? If it's for others to enjoy and play then I'd go with Source any day. I don't know many that play Unreal and consider UDK to be an artists tool for portfolio purposes.

It was a nice day yesterday and I watched 6 ep's of NG in one go. The best episode so far was "Where No one Has Gone Before" which fucking blew my speakers (and almost me) out of the room.

Your partners website. When you click on her work it opens it up in a sort of flash like box with "loading" appearing each time.
The lack of a "next" button is really annoying.
Such work doesn't need tiny thumbnails. Would be better if it was all just large images on top of each other so I can just scroll down and look at them all.

Which is why you shoulf always back your work up on an external. I actually had an ancident not long ago where I started to suspect my newest external was dying. Some of my models were missing and weird stuff was happening and I'm still not sure...
But sometimes you just can't protect data. I read a blog where some dude had the exact same PC next to each other and made sure they were identical in content as well so if one failed, he could jump to the other.

My friend only likes the 360 because he finds it easier to crack. Heck, he broke his 360 trying to chip it and sent it to Microsoft who fixed it for him and literally pirated it.
So now he downloads all his games. I think it has been a good 4-5 years since he last paid for a game.
Anyway I uninstalled the game data and that made the frame rate a fraction better. I continued to finish the game and when I had done so I noticed the frame rate was so much better. Why? Cause instead of 200 NPC's on screen there were now about 25 for some reason. Glitch?

You're all right. I do not like the idea of my PC being built by someone else but I don't have the knowledge, time or money to learn. On the bright side at least I get all this hardware for the low low price of 100 pounds for three years.
Anyway to my dismay, Vista is back on. The technician himself admitted Vista is and I quote "crap" and when I told him I asked the lady in the email if I could have Windows 7 to which she said no. Why? Cause the technician will only install what came with the machine. He agreed with that to some extent and I doubt he'd have installed 7 behind their backs.
Oh well, as long as the freezing is gone I'm happy. They also fixed the audio problem. Some hardware...the front plate, they called it was broken so yet again that was replaced.
Now I can listen to late night music wearing "nothing at allllll".

Nope. I'm using Vista. A quick google brings up nothing but "Will there be an SP3 for Vista".
Anyway can anyone tell me how good this card is? I understood the 8800 GTX was top notch when I bought it but this card is a mystery to me. How much better are the cards above this one?
As for building my own PC. I'm sure it's exciting but like I said to my father yesterday. The Dell dude couldn't answer any of my software questions but was great at building the hardware side of it.
My point is, I'm more software than hardware and really don't have the patience to learn. Besides for 100 pounds I'm covered for three years and don't have to worry about sorting it out. Lazy ftw.
EDIT
By the way for some reason I now have a new V drive with about 47.7 mb space and filled with Dell Diagnostic this and so on. Wonder if he left it plugged in @_@

Other than games the PC works fine so yeah...I'm not gonna reinstall Windows just yet since I already did it like 2 months ago. I'll wait and see if Mr Dell has any ideas, I basically told him all seems well and I believe it's the GPU fan.
Anyway this is a nice chance to just get away from the PC for a while. I may not be on from here on till it's fixed. See you around.
Maybe when I come back Fallout will be more patched up and less buggy. Fallout 3 was a dream.

I was in a Minecraft mood for a while. Played it like 3 days non-stop and told myself this really, really has to stop so I forced it. Anyway I didn't get it today, they must have posted it just after 6 so it'll be here tommorow for sure.
Either way I looked at a load of trailers and it looks quite fun. I think I might join the slavers and do a lot of their dirty work.

Anyway I hold the Mass Effect series in high regard as I thouroughly enjoyed ME1 and loved seeing my choices transfer over to ME2.
I played ME1 waaaaaay back and loved it. The music especially. Then ME2 was coming round the corner and I reformatted so low and behold I got another chance to play ME1 again. Anyway it took longer than I expected and I literally rushed through the three main planets on the day ME2 was arriving.
It was very adrenaline pumping to get through as much of the game as possible and listening to the history of the Protheans with the music in the background really made the start of ME2 more amazing.
Best of all was the fact ME2 ran so much better than ME1. I don't want to spoil anything but I will say that a certain part in ME2, about halfway had a huge impact on me because I had played ME1 just before ME2. You'll know what I mean when you hear "the" music.
I can say the same thing really as TWHL played a part in my rising to the games industry. Now I just have to force my way in and BAM I'll get a front page post dedicated to ME, ME, MEEEEEEEE!
