In the U.S. at least, public transportation pretty much attracts two kinds of people: those too unfortunate to have a car looking to get from place to place quickly, and those who are mentally incapable of driving themselves anywhere or behaving like regular people.
It wouldn't really be a stereotype to categorize 50% of bus riders as smelly, awkward, obnoxious, or generally weird people. I guess they're mostly old too, so that's something.
On my trip to Germany and France, everybody on the trains was really average, probably because there it's a normal mode of transportation. Here, you definitely get your fare share of people you don't want to end up sitting next to.
Basically, public transportation sucks. When I go somewhere, I don't want to have to wonder what kind of drugs are running through the bloodstream of the guy sitting next to me.

Yeah, there's something to be said for the ability to just sit back, relax, and enjoy your computer for a long time to come. The frantic upgrading mentality really sucks, it's nice to just have a really decent system and stick with it for a while.

By the time you find a need for 12 GB of RAM it'll already be time to upgrade again. You don't even need half of that for the most demanding games at the moment. Unless you're in the habit of simultaneously running Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, and Crysis all at the same time, you'll never even notice the difference.
But, hey, if you have the money, I guess I can't see why not. I mean, I'd say the same thing about the dual video cards and how wasteful it seems, but then again, if I had the money, I probably wouldn't be cutting corners either.
lol, was it there before though? Were all maps just reverted to normal "HL" mod status or something? I had no idea the option ever went missing, shows how much I know.
Blue Shift, huh? To be perfectly honest I didn't know there existed any map that required Blue Shift in order to play... after all, BS uses original Half-Life content almost exclusively, barring a few custom textures, and the inclusion of Barney's arm models. Not saying you shouldn't have it available, I'm actually genuinely curious as to whether there are any real BS maps out there. I guess it's a standalone game though, right? Mostly when people want to use Barney as the player character, I just see them include the models into a mod folder.
Another thing I was wondering about, didn't we have an Opposing Force icon back in TWHL v2? I seem to remember that, but I could be mistaken. What happened to all those maps when we changed over to the new site? Or was there never an Opposing Force option?

As a great man once said, that's just the fuckin' way she goes.
Also, I agree with what Blitz man is sayin', but I don't really see its relevance here. There's no more evidence to support the notion that she's bi than evidence that she's lesbian, so I wouldn't just assume she's bi because that's what you want to hear. She might just be into girls.

It's great Satch, though I think you might need to work on the cable management a bit, if you care about stuff like that. Even if you don't care how it looks, it'd be less of a hassle to clean out when it eventually gets dusty.

You have a pulse and a reasonably functional brain, which is all you need to learn to build a computer. Learning takes no money at all, just a quick Google search. In the end, it's a cheaper solution than buying most any prebuilt PC, except for very low end ones which cost less to mass-produce than the parts could be bought for. The only thing that might be an impediment is the time it may take to read a few instructional walkthroughs on the internet, but if you have enough time for journal posts on TWHL, you have enough time for that.

People sure do have some major health issues here on TWHL... it seems like everybody's getting major surgeries done on a regular basis. Ya'll are one high-maintenance crowd.
On the upside, most surgeries DO go well, so I guess it's not that unusual that we haven't had anybody die on us yet.

Who's paying them, exactly? It would be nice to think that helping poor countries through times of trouble is this easy, but somehow I doubt its absolute authenticity. Who exactly is paying to have this water supplied, and what incentive do they have for having people going through this website instead of, say, just sending them a bunch of water? There are no ridiculous accumulations of ads, no apparent source of major revenue for any company, just a simple little game.
If you search about the site, you'll also come to realize that there is no satisfactory explanation for how exactly this clicking game is helping them create revenue to support the donations. It's all real vague, and their "contact" is nothing but an email link.

a 1.6ghz Pentium 4 with about 1GB of RAM and a properly set up XP installation would in all likelihood outperform a 2ghz Celeron with 2.5gb RAM running Vista. Shame. Schools love wasting money, though.

I heard about this a long time ago, thought I posted something about it... but it is rather refreshing after all this time. It was bound to be completed some day, no?

Did you see me?
Because I had this dream last night where I met up with a bunch of TWHL members in a large, poorly made map created by Strider, and we all banded together in order to leave Stu behind. Nobody wanted him there, he was a total party pooper.

Skals, even with popular games, the likelihood that any custom multiplayer map is ever going to be played by anybody other than the author and maybe a few of his friends is, let's face it, small at best. It usually takes well known authors or some force of God for them to end up on servers that anybody plays. The number of custom multiplayer maps being made, compared to the number of them that are ever played, is hugely disproportionate. It's just really difficult for them to get any kind of exposure unless you're the one running the server, and even then it takes a person who wants to join and wait for your map to download, and then wait for other people to join.
It's ridiculous, so I say map for whatever damn multiplayer game you want. Chances are it's never going to really be "used" (unless you count one person running around looking at stuff.)

P64: Vendetta was cool and all, but it wasn't that fun in my opinion. Like, it was fun from a mappers perspective, to look at all the nice visual effects and architecture and wonder how you could possibly do any better, but it doesn't help the fact that many maps still relied on repetitive copy-pasted chunks of high-detail architecture, and the gameplay itself was just lackluster. Shooting grunts isn't enough to tie a mod together.
I never got through Azure Sheep. I could never see what the big deal about it was. Did it have a really great story to make up for the incredibly inconsistent and at times juvenile mapping? I have no idea, it wasn't comprehensive enough to hold me in and intrigue me. When it came to the point where entire maps consisted of nothing but endless empty hallways that made use of an entire three textures, I gave up.

Stu, you're in the U.S., right? Australians drive on the other side of the road, so when he went to take a right hand turn and the people behind him were trying to go around him in the right hand lane, they just ran into him.

Wait, so you're telling me that a mysterious man with a strange, uneven voice who has an invulnerability to all physical weapons and who can teleport to any location at any time and appear in people's dreams and/or visions at the drop of a hat is NOT human?

For one, I wasn't the one paying for it. For another, I was looking for something about this size, and the next smallest one, with a 13.3 inch screen and internal optical drive, was $800... not a lot, but more than the person buying it wanted to spend.
I wasn't willing to go any bigger than that, and I was limited to the selection they had in stock at Best Buy, if I wanted to have it before the trip (which was the whole point.)
Also, every laptop now is widescreen, so there's not going to be anything normal about any of their native resolutions. Old games will hate it either way.

Despite GMA being balls, I seem to remember some old Intel integrated graphics card working somewhat smoothly in our desktop PC circa 2005. I'd expect a netbook released months ago to perform somewhat similarly... But I'd be wrong I guess.
Also, posting from Heathrow, lal. Worst deal on wireless internet access ever.

I actually did find a way to run HL perfectly, just with black borders on either side of the screen in 800x600 mode. It's almost better than widescreen, it's the aspect ratio it was meant to be played in.
I think nVidia just hates OpenGL.
It's just funny, because my ten year old IBM laptop with up to 16mb of shared video memory seemed a bit smoother...
