Only in America they can think of something like that.
Seriously? In this day, you're still saying that?

Anyway, Rimrook brings up a good point. Tossing away most of the internet would slaughter the economy.

Shadow of Chernobyl had fully dynamic lighting back in 2007.
FEAR had it in 2005.
Even Doom 3 had it way back in 2004 :P

Ok, so maybe the rays in the video were a tell-tale sign. The new lighting enhancements threw me off.

It's just Valve's movie creation tool. Consider the TF2/L4D videos, it's the same as that.
The video was all mostly realtime. Check my Portal 2 videos thread. it looks like Source uses completely dynamic lighting in Portal 2, or at least dynamic sky light. You can see shadows cast by leaves and such move around in parts of the videos.

Anyway, a lot of that Portal footage looks VERY impressive for Source. Could it be a new engine? Or maybe it's just yet another enhancement of Source for a new game.

But a dream doesn't have to pertain to your real life.

I still think "map something surreal" would be more appropriate :|

A Nightmare doesnt even have to be scary.
Yes it does, that's half of what defines a nightmare.

And a nightmare competition will be expected to be highly surreal/dreamlike. Even if surreality isn't really what the judges are looking for, the idea of a map being representative of a nightmare might influence the results subconsciously.

Anything that isn't surreal might then be subject to poor reviews, regardless of how scary or well-constructed it is.

"Map a nightmare" is essentially "map a scary, surreal map", and that's limiting because it forces 2 themes upon the mapper.

I feel it doesn't cater properly to all users.
Map an island was a bad example.

Also: A nightmare that takes place on an island might not be viewed the same as an island with a nightmare theme. The latter would be seen as more unique than the former with regards to their respective tasks.

in Competition 28 Vote-O-Rama Post #281596
I strongly disagree with map a nightmare or anything of the like.

Edit: The theme is far too restricting, but also broad in all the wrong areas. Unless the goal of the competition is to see how users tackle a specific environment, "Map horror" or "Map something scary" would be more appropriate.

If this turns into a "map a specific environment" competition, I still feel that a nightmare/dream is a poor environment choice. EG: Something like "map an island" would be more appropriate. Those that wanted to map a nightmare can still make their island a nightmare, in such a case, but those that aren't the best surreal thinkers are still given a fair chance.

I like map an adventure.
It's vague like some of the older competitions.

Most of the others are too specific. With a theme specified by the competition, a lot of creativity is lost.

find me one fighting game released on the PC which doesn't let you use control pads. One.
I don't want to have to buy extra equipment for one version of a game when I can just as easily pick up the same game for a system where a control pad is the standard.
Again, either plug in a controller or even better, use a mouse?
Honestly, I was thinking about JRPGs more so than general RPGs. With regards to this, the abovementioned still stands.

There are also keyboard+mouse controller options on a PS3, which could be approached just the same as buying a controller for a PC. The matter of "why should I when it comes standard elsewhere?" remains.
Strongly disagree. Play Psychonauts to see a platformer done far, far better on PC.
Provide more than one example. I've provided 4 franchises that I've had extensive experience with that I feel fare better on a console. I need you to cite more than one exception to debunk the generalized statement. If you are specifically talking about comparing PC versions to console versions, then I still have 2 franchises that debuted on PC and console.
I recently bought XBox 360 just for FFXIII but I've been wanting to get Halo 3 as well, just so that I can say how much crap it is.
You're really cool. I'm sure that the developer will feel very bad about making the game after hearing what you have to say about it, especially after funding them along with every other fanboy or prick who thinks he's being clever by doing exactly the same thing as you.

Platformers and the like work ten times better on consoles. Case in point: the Devil May Cry franchise. Or maybe Ratchet and Clank, God of War, or Silent Hill.
Fighting games are also arguably better suited on a console because the controller is closer to an arcade machine than a keyboard is.
RPGs also seem to work better because an array of menus is arguably more comfortably navigated on a controller than a keyboard, as well as the ever-increasing platform-like nature of console RPGs today becoming more suitable for joystick+buttons.

Again, it's not a matter of absolute superiority, it's a matter of what floats your boat. All you've cited in favor of the PC are shooters.

You're being awfully whimsical with all these ambitious projects.

If you're going to commit to giving video reviews of our maps, why not finish off the video reviews of the MOTM instead? They would seem to deserve it more than some random guy asking for a thorough review.

You've also not updated your vlog for some time. If you're going to make some videos, why not update your vlog?

You've opened up a formspring account. Why are you using formspring when you answer emails in your vlog? Are you going to mention the questions people ask you on formspring in your vlog?

What is this Sims Virus thing? I'm sure it will be cool, but it's also yet another whimsical project that you seem to have come up with.

The results of the second competition weren't announced until two months later.

And what about your podcast?

There's just all these things that you're juggling, and nothing ever really gets done.
Both you and Urby have a tendency to do this.

First impressions of NieA_7 have been good. The show was made by exactly the same team as Lain, but is pretty much the total opposite. It's sporadic, relying heavily on comedic timing ala Azumanga, but much calmer. Not necessarily more dry, though. The English voices are actually really good, except for Niea, which made me want to cut myself. Not that I watch it with the dub anyway, but it's good to know for potential viewers, yes?

The scene following the opening scene put me off quite a bit, honestly. It was really, really corny and relied too much on common anime tropes such as quick, angry speaking and slapstick beatings. The rest of the first episode was very much so redeeming of the first 5 minutes. I also really don't even like Niea's character so far, but the protagonist and newly introduced supporting character express a great deal of depth right off the bat.

Also, the animations is superb and consistent, and the soundtrack is spot on. There was also a bit of fanservice :|

Of course, this was only the first episode. No time to watch any more right now, though. Head is killing me and I've got some serious chills. Time to go to bed, goodnight.

The Road was awesome. I still need to buy it along with a few other favorites.

Kick-Ass
Fantastic. The trailers are misleading, there are some comical elements here, but Kick-Ass isn't a comedy. It's actually closer to Watchmen than anything I can think of. Think like some kind of mix between The Dark Knight and Watchmen, but with kids.
The film does an awesome job of mixing the practical with the overtly absurd, though it does go overboard a bit in some places.

I've caught Naruto a handful of times and watched it for the sake of being able to say it's bad. I've never seen Bleach, and never wanted to, but have only heard good things about it.

The thing about ongoing mainstream anime, though, is that they rehash so much so often. It's like the band Nickelback. They sound nice for two or three songs, then you find out that they only have one sound, and there's really nothing special about it. Then you see that they're dragging on this style, unchanged, with no end in sight.
