Solution: search thru entities like env_glow, env_sprite, ambient_generic, env_shooter, etc. - anything the engine has to precache a file for - for the bad name.

How are you running your map, from the end of the compile process? Try starting a server normally playing your map.

Doesn't need any learning, just, like, three menu clicks.

Use a scrolling texture, custom or otherwise. Read the tutorial 'Custom Textures' for info.

Don't put standard resources in your Steam directories, they're already in the GCFs as has been stated before, and you just make it slower.

Texture size = solids on grid size at scale of 1.0

i.e. 64x64 texture covers a 64x64x64 cube perfectly.

I highly recommend Visual IRC, it's free and easily-configured for newbies to IRC as well as regulars. Use it m'self.

Hammer uses more than a meg of RAM, and I'd be very suprised if you had a combined L1+L2 cache of > 1MB ;)

I compile manually sometimes, DOS prompt, aaaaah.

I wouldn't, t'be honest. It's generally not recommended to post your first maps. Maybe play them with a friend or somethin', get someone on MSN, IRC, whatever, but not proper release.
