New Compo!

As promised plus a week of delay, a new compo is here!

Compo brief is here.

Official compo thread is here.

Also be sure to check out our newest tutorial, the Coding Fog Addendum tutorial by darkphoenix_68. He's done a fine job re-writing the old tutorial, which now has much more clarity and is easier to read.

On another note, the behavior of the forums needs an uplift. We're contemplating the idea of temp-bans to all those who might degrade the forum on a daily basis. Dont derail off-topic without relevance. Dont argue a thread into a flame-fest. No posting links that lead to anything porn related (I'm definitely serious about this one). Lastly, dont make useless spam journal threads that aren't either mentioning something serious or showing off work. It's common sense. If I need to write a guide on forum etiquitte, I will. You know who you are.

Edit: Because of concern in the shoutbox, my definition of "serious" journal posts extend to the light hearted ones too. Habboi's pirate journal is just fine. We really just want to avoid the completely mindless ones like the "Andrew J. Morris's" and the failcat pictures. No memes of any kind unless they're in conjunction with something else.

Edit2: Rephrased: Dont make your journal posts one sentence that says "I did something!". Also if you have a journal post of good length, dont edit it back to one sentence.

Get mapping! :>

Indeed! Looking forward to the results for this one.

Now, about that warning: It's some of the language I've been noticing that concerns me the most, and I'm not talking about swearing, either. Discriminatory terms, describing things as 'gay' or anything along those lines does not have a place on TWHL. I personally won't even be issuing warnings because, as Grim said, you know who you are.

Ok Grim, I've just discovered the "Compo brief is here." link so making it for CSS makes no sense.

Really nice that compo! And I like the temp-ban idea :) gj!

Hey thanks for the tutorial link! :-)

Of course, it is now up twice; once under the "Coding Fog Addendum" title and once under the original title...

Do I need to do anything else about this, or is it something which can be fixed on your end? :-)
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-17 06:44:28 UTC Comment #98734
i'm not sure how to handle it atm - to leave it as it is, or paste your bit onto the end, or just get rid of the old one....lots of options. since the original author left it's probably safe to get rid of the old one.
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-17 06:58:53 UTC Comment #98735
Since my text has already been pasted over the original as well, it's probably safer and less confusing to delete that one. :-)

Up to you guys, of course... I was originally led to believe that the original could not be deleted. shrug

Is there separate judging on source and goldsource?
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-17 09:05:07 UTC Comment #98737
Source and Goldsource entries will be judged together.

I fail to see why portal is in, seriously. HL1 and HL2 & Episodes are all sorta the same, while you could call Portal a game of his own. Actually a PUZZLE-game of his own. I dunno, it feels rather unfair. Portal puzzles are all sorta the same (as in, how can I get to the end by using portals), they will be just more of Portal THE GAME rather than a self-thought puzzle IN HL. Well, I find it hard to describe but hopefully my point came across. I think it just ruins the originality and diversity. But heh, whatever.

The judges aren't stupid, they know the limits of each game and will judge fairly. Initially this compo was going to be Portal only, so technically, the odd ones out are every game except Portal, not the other way around.

Once I have completed my CS map I'll start on a compo map.

"describing things as 'gay' or anything along those lines does not have a place on TWHL."
That means Luke's TWHL activity will be reduced by 50%. (jk)

It's funny because it's true.

Andrew J S Morris is a new meme.

Is "ghey" acceptable?
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-18 20:20:47 UTC Comment #98743
No. You still mean the same thing.
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-18 21:29:32 UTC Comment #98744
What if deep down I don't?

PROVE THAT I MEAN IT
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-18 22:53:19 UTC Comment #98745
I think the politically correct term would be "sexual orientation challenged", or something like that.
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-19 02:51:22 UTC Comment #98746
For the first and last time, quit flamebaiting. More bullshit from you will result in a tempban - Daub
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-19 03:43:11 UTC Comment #98747
That's actually a definition, a bad one, and it's all irrelevant anyway. Let's keep this about the compo, unless there are any real concerns about the warning?
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-20 21:24:31 UTC Comment #98748
In reference to the edit2,

Is a "I beat a game" journal ok if you include a summary of the gameplay and stuff? Because i kinda like to do that.
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-20 22:35:46 UTC Comment #98749
If you include some sort of meaningful review and/or insight, then that's fine.
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-21 03:05:40 UTC Comment #98750
We're being pretty lenient with the journals. We're really just trying to avoid pointless little ones that end up with 50 comments of people calling each other stupid things and generally making TWHL look like a place filled with idiots.

So yeah, show things off, complain about something, praise something, tell us what you're up to, whatever. We just don't want anyone going stupid or offensive.
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-21 05:46:35 UTC Comment #98751
We really need a new set of forum/journal/general site rules all put together in one Rules page.
Commented 16 years ago2008-09-21 07:02:16 UTC Comment #98752
Yeah, I was thinking of that myself just the other day. I have a few ideas we'll need to run through soon, we can handle it in the uhh.. 'secret' forum when the time comes.
